Taxonomy & naming
Phalloceros maldonadoi was described in 2023 by Souto-Santos, Lucinda and Buckup in the Journal of Fish Biology (volume 103, pages 91–102), in a paper documenting bilateral genital asymmetry in the genus Phalloceros and erecting this new species from coastal drainages of southern Brazil. The genus Phalloceros Eigenmann, 1907 belongs to the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers — within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phalloceros maldonadoi Souto-Santos, Lucinda & Buckup, 2023 as the valid name.
The species epithet honours the Colombian ichthyologist Javier Alejandro Maldonado-Ocampo, in recognition of his contributions to the study of Neotropical fishes. The genus name Phalloceros combines the Greek phallos (penis) with keras (horn), a reference to the gonopodium — the modified, intromittent anal fin that male poeciliids use to fertilise females internally.
Phalloceros is a genus of small Neotropical livebearers that has been undergoing active taxonomic revision, with several recently erected species split out of older, broadly defined forms. P. maldonadoi is one of these recently described species; a separate later study set about "dismantling the Phalloceros harpagos species complex," describing further new species from the upper rio Paraná, upper rio Paraíba do Sul, and other coastal rivers of south-eastern Brazil. P. maldonadoi was diagnosed on the basis of distinctive genital morphology rather than colour or gross body shape, which in this genus are conservative.
Morphology
Phalloceros maldonadoi is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2 in standard length in the type material. The body is elongated with an oval cross-section, the general build of a small stream-dwelling poeciliid. Meristic counts recorded for the species include eight dorsal soft rays, ten to eleven anal soft rays, and thirty-one to thirty-two vertebrae.
The diagnostic features that distinguish P. maldonadoi from its congeners are genital rather than external. The original description was built around bilateral genital asymmetry — an unusual trait for a fish. In females, there is an asymmetrical, flattened, hood-like projection of skin between the anus and the urogenital papilla. In males, the gonopodium shows a distal position of the hooks on the appendices of the third gonopodial ray (R3), and the hook placement is asymmetric. These structures are the autapomorphies on which the species was erected.
Beyond these traits, detailed life colouration is not well documented in the cached sources. Like other Phalloceros, the fish is presumed to show the modest, somewhat speckled patterning typical of the genus, but no description of live colour, sexual colour difference, or strain variation is available here, and so this article does not assert one. Data on appearance in life are sparse.
Habitat
Phalloceros maldonadoi is known from the coastal river drainages of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil. The original description records it from the Tijucas, Maruim, Aririú, Cubatão do Sul, Rio da Madre, D'Una and Tubarão river basins — a set of relatively short, independent coastal systems draining the Atlantic slope of southern Brazil. This is the type-locality region for the species.
FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of subtropical climate. As a small poeciliid of coastal drainages, it would be expected to occupy the kinds of small-water habitats favoured by the genus — slow streams, marginal vegetation, ditches and pools — but specific habitat measurements (temperature, pH, flow, substrate) for P. maldonadoi are not reported in the cached sources, and so precise water parameters are not asserted here.
Because the species is restricted, as currently known, to a cluster of coastal basins in a single Brazilian state, its native range appears geographically narrow. Mating
Like all poeciliids, Phalloceros maldonadoi reproduces by internal fertilisation. Males possess a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which is used to transfer sperm to the female. In this species the gonopodium is notably specialised: the original description diagnoses it by the distal, asymmetric placement of the hooks on the appendices of the third gonopodial ray, part of the bilateral genital asymmetry that gives the describing paper its title.
The corresponding female trait is an asymmetrical, hood-like flap of skin between the anus and the urogenital papilla. Bilateral genital asymmetry of this kind — matched, mirror-breaking structures in the two sexes — is unusual among fishes and was the central morphological theme of the species' description. In poeciliids generally, such gonopodial and genital specialisations are tied closely to the mechanics of internal insemination and to species recognition.
Beyond the morphology of the genitalia, the courtship behaviour of P. maldonadoi has not been described in the cached sources. Detailed accounts of display, female choice or mating tactics — well studied in some other poeciliids — are not available for this recently described, aquarium-absent species, and are not asserted here.
Breeding
Phalloceros maldonadoi is a viviparous (livebearing) poeciliid: after internal fertilisation via the male gonopodium, females carry the developing young and give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. This is the universal reproductive mode of the genus and the family.

Superfetation, the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages that occurs in some poeciliids, has not been documented for Phalloceros, and so is not claimed for this species.
Species-specific reproductive details — gestation length, brood size, frequency of broods, age at maturity — are not reported for P. maldonadoi in the cached sources. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the rapid, repeated reproduction typical of small livebearers, but precise brood figures for this fish are not available and are not invented here.

The absence of an assessment is not the same as an absence of concern. As currently known, the species is restricted to a cluster of relatively small coastal river basins in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil — a region under pressure from urbanisation, agriculture and habitat alteration. A narrowly distributed, recently described fish of small coastal drainages is precisely the kind of species whose conservation status warrants future evaluation, even if the data needed to assess it are not yet assembled.
Until a formal assessment is made, the responsible position is simply caution: P. maldonadoi should be treated as a regionally endemic species of unknown conservation standing, and the small coastal streams it inhabits as habitat worth protecting.
