Taxonomy & naming
Phalloceros mimbi was described in 2025 by Walter S. Serra, Fabrizio Scarabino, Noelia Gobel and Gabriel Laufer in the Argentine journal Acta Zoologica Lilloana, in a paper treating a new species of the Phalloceros harpagos species complex from the middle and lower Uruguay River floodplains. The genus Phalloceros is a group of small New World livebearers in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the same broad assemblage that contains guppies, mollies and mosquitofishes — and was for a long time treated as containing a single widespread, variable species before a modern revision split it into many narrowly distributed forms. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and the species is catalogued in FishBase under SpecCode 71081.
The describers diagnose P. mimbi by a unique combination of characters rather than any single trait: a symmetric, hood-like structure immediately anterior to the urogenital papilla in females; the absence of the large papillae at the mandibular symphysis that mark some other Phalloceros females; well-developed hooks in the distal portion of the gonopodial appendices of males; and a lateral spot that is usually present in both sexes. Its geographically closest relative is P. caudimaculatus, which lacks the gonopodial hooks, and the new species is not found living alongside any other member of the genus.
The specific epithet mimbi comes from a Guaraní word meaning "shiny," chosen for the light blue and violet glow along the sides of the body — a fitting nod to the Indigenous languages of the region from which the fish was collected. The genus name Phalloceros, from the Greek phallos ("penis") and keras ("horn"), refers to the modified, hook-bearing intromittent organ of the males that is central to the genus's reproductive biology.
Morphology
Phalloceros mimbi is a very small fish. The type material includes females reaching about 1.5 in in standard length (the largest measured at 1.5 in SL), with males, as in most poeciliids, somewhat smaller. The body is elongated with an oval cross-section, the typical build of a stream-dwelling livebearer that spends its time among submerged vegetation in slow or still water. Fin counts are modest and consistent with the genus: roughly 8 to 9 dorsal soft rays and 9 to 11 anal soft rays.
The most useful identifying features are subtle and largely concern the reproductive anatomy. Females bear a distinctive symmetric, hood-like structure just in front of the urogenital papilla, and they lack the enlarged papillae at the junction of the lower jaw seen in some related forms. Males carry the diagnostic feature that gives the genus its name — a gonopodium whose appendices end in well-developed hooks, a structure used in copulation. Both sexes usually show a lateral spot on the flank.
In life the fish's defining visual feature is colour rather than shape: a soft, iridescent wash of light blue and violet along the sides, the trait that earned it the Guaraní name mimbi. Beyond this sheen and the flank spot, P. mimbi is an unobtrusive, silvery little fish whose firm identification rests on examining the gonopodium and the female urogenital region rather than on any bold external pattern.
Habitat
Phalloceros mimbi is known from the floodplains of the middle and lower Uruguay River, a system that forms part of the border between Uruguay and Argentina. The type material was collected in Uruguay, in the Río Negro and Salto Departments, and in Argentina, in Entre Ríos Province; FishBase summarises the distribution simply as Uruguay, while the original description extends it across the river to Argentina. The fish inhabits fresh, temperate, benthopelagic waters — the shallow, vegetated margins and backwaters of a large lowland floodplain river.
These floodplain habitats are seasonally dynamic, expanding and contracting with the river's flood pulse, and small livebearers like Phalloceros typically concentrate in the calm, well-vegetated shallows where cover is dense and current is slight. The species' environment is classed as temperate rather than tropical, reflecting the subtropical-to-temperate climate of the lower Uruguay basin, where water temperatures swing seasonally well below the warmth that tropical aquarium livebearers prefer.
Only three populations of P. mimbi are currently known, and the fish does not occur in sympatry with other members of its genus. Two of the three populations are described by the authors as relatively protected from the main threats facing the region's freshwaters, a point that bears directly on the species' conservation outlook given how little of the world its known range covers.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Phalloceros mimbi has been published — the species is too newly described for its feeding ecology to have been worked out. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.0, consistent with a small, opportunistic omnivore rather than a specialist predator or a dedicated herbivore.
By analogy with its close relatives in the Phalloceros harpagos complex and with small vegetated-margin poeciliids generally, P. mimbi can reasonably be expected to feed on a mix of algae and biofilm, organic detritus, and small invertebrates — diatoms, micro-crustaceans, insect larvae and other tiny drifting or clinging prey taken from among submerged plants and the water surface. These are inferences from the genus and habitat, however, not observations specific to this species; here the data are genuinely sparse.
What can be said with more confidence is that the fish is a small, near-continuous grazer of the vegetated shallows rather than an active mid-water hunter, a lifestyle typical of livebearers that shelter among dense aquatic plants. Beyond that general picture, the specifics of what P. mimbi eats in the Uruguay floodplains remain to be documented.
Mating
Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Phalloceros mimbi reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — rather than by external spawning. In Phalloceros this organ is specialised: the gonopodial appendices of male P. mimbi end in well-developed hooks, one of the diagnostic characters separating it from its closest relative P. caudimaculatus, which lacks them. These hooks are thought to function in grasping the female during the brief act of copulation.
The genus name itself — "horn-penis" — underscores how central this male anatomy is to the group. As is generally the case in livebearing poeciliids, mating is expected to be frequent and male-driven, with males pursuing females among the vegetation; the females, for their part, carry the matching specialised urogenital anatomy, including the symmetric hood-like structure in front of the urogenital papilla that helps diagnose the species.
The fine details of courtship behaviour — whether P. mimbi males display, sneak, or both, and how females exercise any mate choice — have not been studied. What is documented is the anatomy of fertilisation rather than the behaviour around it, so the specifics of this species' mating system remain to be described.
Breeding
Phalloceros mimbi is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. This is the universal reproductive mode of the genus and of the poeciliine subfamily to which it belongs, and it is the trait that makes Phalloceros, like guppies and mollies, a livebearer in the aquarist's sense.
No brood-size, gestation-length or superfetation data have been published for P. mimbi specifically — the species is known chiefly from its type series and its diagnostic anatomy, not from a reproductive study. In small Phalloceros generally, broods are modest in number, in keeping with the fish's tiny size, and FishBase rates the genus's resilience as high, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months, which implies a steady, productive reproductive output even if individual broods are small. Whether P. mimbi practises superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, known in some poeciliids — has not been reported.
In the absence of species-specific observations, the safest statement is the general one: P. mimbi gives live birth to fully formed fry that are independent from the moment they are released, and any further detail awaits dedicated study of its reproduction.
In the aquarium
Phalloceros mimbi is not an aquarium fish in any established sense. Described only in 2025 and known from three wild populations in the Uruguay River floodplains, it has no presence in the hobby, no commercial supply, and no documented body of husbandry experience. Anything written about keeping it is therefore extrapolation from its biology rather than reportable practice.
If it were maintained, its requirements would follow from its habitat: a small, peaceful, densely planted setup mimicking the vegetated floodplain margins it inhabits, with gentle filtration and plenty of cover. Notably, the species comes from temperate rather than tropical waters, so it would likely prefer cooler, more seasonally variable temperatures than the warm conditions suited to guppies and other tropical livebearers — a point that distinguishes the southern Phalloceros from their tropical relatives. As a tiny livebearer it would breed readily in good conditions, with the usual caveat that adults of most poeciliids will eat their own fry unless cover or separation is provided.
The honest assessment is that this is a wild species of scientific rather than hobbyist interest. Its restricted range and conservation flag make casual collection inappropriate, and for the aquarist its value lies in understanding the diversity of South America's livebearers, not in keeping it.
Conservation
Phalloceros mimbi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described only in 2025 it is far too recent to have been evaluated, and FishBase records its status as Not Evaluated (Ref. 130435, Version 2025-2); it is likewise Not Evaluated under CITES. There is no formal Red List category for this fish, and any claim to the contrary would be unfounded.
Its describers, however, did not leave the question of its vulnerability untouched. They note that the species' global distribution covers less than 200,000 square kilometres and that its area of occurrence amounts to under ten per cent of Uruguay's national territory, and on that basis they recommend treating P. mimbi as a conservation priority and as a Threatened Species for Uruguay's national protected-areas system (SNAP). This is the authors' own assessment and management recommendation, not a formal IUCN listing — an important distinction — but it signals that the fish is range-restricted enough to warrant attention from the outset.
The picture is not uniformly bleak. Of the three known populations, two are described as relatively protected from the main threats facing the region's freshwaters, which offers some buffer against habitat loss and degradation in the heavily modified Uruguay River basin. Still, with so few populations and such a small global range, the responsible position is to regard P. mimbi as a species of conservation concern pending a formal assessment, and to treat its floodplain habitats — and any future collection of the fish — with corresponding care.
