Taxonomy & naming
Phalloceros ocellatus was described by Paulo H. F. Lucinda in 2008 as part of a landmark monograph that revised the entire genus Phalloceros Eigenmann, 1907, and in a single stroke added twenty-one new species to it. Before that work almost every small spotted Phalloceros from south-eastern and eastern Brazil had been lumped under the catch-all name Phalloceros caudimaculatus, and Lucinda's study showed that this apparent single species was in fact a swarm of geographically restricted forms separable on pigmentation, fin-ray counts and body proportions. Phalloceros ocellatus is one of those resurrected entities, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phalloceros ocellatus Lucinda, 2008 as the valid name.
The genus sits in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearing toothcarps that include the guppies, mollies, platies and mosquitofishes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Within Phalloceros the species belongs to a tight cluster diagnosed by the roundish, well-defined ocellated lateral spot: only P. leticiae and P. mikrommatos share that exact mark. Lucinda separated P. ocellatus from P. leticiae on postorbital length (in females 24.8–39.3% of standard length against 39.2–42.2% in P. leticiae) and from P. mikrommatos on the number of anal-fin rays in females (ten rather than eleven), the kind of fine meristic detail on which the modern boundaries of these fishes rest.
Morphology
This is a very small fish. In the type material the largest males and unsexed specimens reached about 0.5 in in standard length, while females grew larger, to roughly 1 in SL — a pronounced size difference between the sexes that is typical of the poeciliids, where the female is the bigger, deeper-bodied sex and the male a slighter, more streamlined animal. Measured to the tail tip the total length is a little greater than these standard-length figures, but the species remains firmly among the smallest of aquarium-relevant livebearers.
The diagnostic feature, and the source of the name, is the lateral spot: a roundish, well-defined patch of dark pigment ringed by paler tissue — an ocellus, or little eye — set on the flank. It is this sharply circular, ocellated mark that distinguishes P. ocellatus from most congeners. In fin counts the dorsal carries seven to eight soft rays and the anal nine to ten, with thirty-one to thirty-two vertebrae. The defining male structure, shared with all livebearing poeciliids, is the gonopodium: the anal fin of the mature male is modified into a slender, mobile intromittent organ used to inseminate the female. Indeed the genus name itself memorialises this organ, from the Greek for a horn-shaped phallus.
Habitat
Phalloceros ocellatus is endemic to a narrow band of the Atlantic coastal drainages of eastern Brazil, recorded between Prado in southern Bahia and Sooretama in Espírito Santo. These are small coastal rivers and streams draining toward the Atlantic across the lowland forest belt of the region, and the species is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of such warm tropical waters.
No detailed limnological profile has been published for the precise pools this fish occupies, so any account of its water is partly inferred from the wider biology of small Phalloceros of the Brazilian coastal plain. Such streams are typically warm, running broadly in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, soft to moderately hard, and slightly acidic to neutral — the unremarkable, vegetation-fringed shallows in which small livebearers graze. The data here are sparse: the species' habitat is best described in terms of its restricted coastal-drainage range rather than measured environmental variables, and that small, fragmented distribution is the central fact of its ecology and the basis of its conservation status.
Feeding
Direct dietary studies of Phalloceros ocellatus have not been published, and FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.0 — the value expected of a small omnivore that takes a mixture of plant and animal matter. Small Phalloceros are typical of the micro-grazing livebearers of warm shallow water: they pick at algae and biofilm, browse detritus, and snap up small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny drifting items from the water column and surface film.
In the absence of species-specific data, husbandry expectations are drawn from its better-known relatives. Phalloceros caudimaculatus, the closely allied "dusky millions fish", thrives on a broad omnivorous diet, and a small P. ocellatus would be expected to do the same: fine flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm, together with the algal and vegetable matter these grazers benefit from. Like other small, constantly feeding livebearers it would suit several small daily feedings rather than a single large meal.
Mating
Phalloceros ocellatus is a livebearer with internal fertilisation, the reproductive mode shared by all Poeciliinae. The male inseminates the female using the gonopodium, the rod-like organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin; sperm is transferred internally rather than shed over eggs in the water. No courtship behaviour has been documented for this particular species, but in small poeciliids generally the male pursues females persistently, combining brief displays with sneak insemination attempts, and there is no nest, territory or pair bond.
The marked size dimorphism — females reaching 1 in against the male's 0.5 in — is the familiar poeciliid pattern in which the female invests in body size to carry developing young while the male stays small and mobile. As in related livebearers, females may be able to store viable sperm internally and draw on it for more than one brood from a single mating, though this has not been confirmed specifically for P. ocellatus. Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — is known in some poeciliid lineages but has not been documented in Phalloceros, and should not be assumed for this species.
Breeding
After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. In Phalloceros the embryos are lecithotrophic — provisioned mainly by yolk laid down in the egg, with little or none of the post-fertilisation maternal nourishment (matrotrophy) developed to a placenta-like degree in genera such as Heterandria and Poeciliopsis. The young are therefore essentially fully formed miniatures at birth.
No brood-size or gestation figures have been published for Phalloceros ocellatus itself, and on this point the data are genuinely sparse. The closest reasonable analog is the congeneric P. caudimaculatus, a prolific small livebearer that produces broods of a few dozen fry with a gestation of roughly three to four weeks in warm water. A fish as small as P. ocellatus would be expected to bear smaller broods than that, but the specific numbers are not on record and are not asserted here. As with other small livebearers, newborn fry would be immediately free-swimming and able to feed, would need dense cover to escape predation including by the adults, and would grow quickly on infusoria and finely powdered foods, with males developing the gonopodium within a few weeks of birth.
In the aquarium
Phalloceros ocellatus is a wild, range-restricted species rather than a commercial aquarium fish, and it is rarely if ever seen in the general trade; what reaches hobbyists tends to do so through specialist livebearer keepers and collectors. There is accordingly no body of established husbandry literature specific to it, and the notes here are inferred from the requirements of small Brazilian coastal-stream Phalloceros generally rather than tested on this species.
On that basis it would be kept much as one keeps other small, peaceful livebearers: a small, well-planted, mature aquarium with gentle filtration, warm water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, and soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic-to-neutral chemistry reflecting its coastal-stream origins. Dense planting matters both for the security of a timid micro-fish and for the survival of fry, which adults will eat. As a tiny species it should be kept only with similarly small, gentle tankmates, or better in a single-species set-up that also makes line-keeping of a wild form practical. The species is harmless and of low fishing vulnerability; the real husbandry value in keeping it lies less in display than in maintaining a genetically distinct, range-restricted wild livebearer in captivity.
Conservation
Phalloceros ocellatus is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1b(iii). The listing reflects the central fact of the species' biology: it is confined to a small range of coastal Brazilian drainages between Prado and Sooretama, and that restricted, fragmented distribution — combined with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its stream habitat — places it just short of the thresholds for a threatened category.
The coastal lowlands of Bahia and Espírito Santo have been heavily altered by agriculture, deforestation and urban and infrastructure development, and small endemic stream fishes with narrow ranges are especially exposed to such habitat loss and degradation. Against that pressure the species' high biological resilience — a short population doubling time, expected of a fecund small livebearer — offers some buffer, but it does not offset a geography this confined. The species is not listed on CITES or CMS. For aquarists the conservation relevance is mainly that this is a wild, locally endemic fish of conservation concern: stock should be obtained and maintained responsibly, kept as clean genetic lines where possible, and never released into non-native waters.
