Phalloceros titthos is one of the many small, retiring live-bearing toothcarps that Paulo Lucinda separated out in his sweeping 2008 revision of the genus Phalloceros, the dusky-grey relatives of the better-known caudimaculatus. Endemic to a narrow strip of Brazilian coastal creeks draining into the bays of Guaratuba and Paranaguá in Paraná State, it is a quiet, reticulate-flanked little fish known to science chiefly from museum jars rather than aquaria. Its odd specific name — from the Greek for a woman's breast — points to the one feature that sets it apart from its congeners: a conspicuous papilla that swells at the chin of large adult females.

Taxonomy & naming

Phalloceros titthos was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Paulo Henrique Franco Lucinda in 2008, in a monographic revision of the genus published in Neotropical Ichthyology (6(2):113–158). Until that work the genus Phalloceros was treated as effectively monotypic — almost everything was lumped under the widespread Phalloceros caudimaculatus — and Lucinda's revision split that catch-all into more than twenty species diagnosed on fine details of male gonopodial structure, female anatomy and colour pattern. P. titthos was one of the new species recognised in that paper, with its holotype (MZUSP 79670, a 1.5 in female) taken from a creek near the beach at Guaratuba, Paraná, Brazil.

The genus Phalloceros belongs to the family Poeciliidae, the New World live-bearing toothcarps that also include the guppies, mollies and mosquitofishes, and within it to the subfamily Poeciliinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phalloceros titthos Lucinda, 2008 as the valid name. Because the species was carved out of a long-confused complex, much of what older aquarium and field literature recorded as "Phalloceros caudimaculatus" from this part of coastal Brazil may in fact refer to titthos or its neighbours — a reminder that the genus's true diversity was hidden until the type material was re-examined.

The specific epithet titthos is Greek for a woman's breast or an animal's teat, and refers to the small papillae at the mandibular symphysis — the midline of the lower jaw — that develop only in large adult females. FishBase lists the English common name "Breast toothcarp," a direct rendering of that allusion.

Morphology

Phalloceros titthos is a small fish even by poeciliid standards, and strongly size-dimorphic in the manner typical of the family. Females are the larger sex, reaching about 2 in standard length (recorded range roughly 1–2 in SL), while males are much smaller, around 1 in SL at most (about 0.5–1 in SL in the type series). The body is moderately elongate and slightly compressed, with a dorsal fin of mostly eight soft rays (rarely nine) set well back, and 30–32 vertebrae.

The diagnostic feature of the species — and the source of its name — is a very large papilla at the mandibular symphysis of large adult females, a fleshy swelling at the midline of the chin that is not seen in other members of the genus. Lucinda used this symphyseal papilla, together with gonopodial details, to separate titthos from its congeners. Females also bear a straight urogenital papilla positioned between the anus and the first anal-fin ray.

In preserved material the colour is a dark brown ground, darker along the back, overlaid by a reticulate (net-like) pattern produced by pigment cells concentrated near the scale margins — the same kind of flank reticulation that runs through much of the genus. A dark brown lateral spot sits over about the seventeenth or eighteenth scale of the lateral series in most specimens (it was absent in one), and faint vertical bars and dusky fins appear in some individuals. Live colours have not been well documented; the description was based on alcohol-preserved fish.

Habitat

Phalloceros titthos is endemic to the Atlantic-slope coastal drainages of Paraná State in southern Brazil, specifically the small rivers and creeks that flow into the Baía de Guaratuba and the Baía de Paranaguá. This is a region of warm, humid Atlantic Forest lowlands, and the type material came from a creek close to the beach at Guaratuba — the sort of shallow, sluggish coastal watercourse that the smaller poeciliids favour.

FishBase classifies the species as freshwater, benthopelagic and tropical, consistent with a fish of slow lowland creeks, marginal vegetation, ditches and pools rather than fast or deep water. Detailed measurements of temperature, pH and hardness from the type localities are not published in the description, so specific water chemistry for this species is data-sparse; the broad expectation for the region is warm, soft to moderately mineralised coastal water.

Because its range is confined to a short stretch of the Paraná coast around two bays, P. titthos has a much narrower distribution than the wide-ranging caudimaculatus complex from which it was separated. That restricted, low-elevation coastal range is worth bearing in mind in any conservation reading of the species, even though it is not currently considered threatened.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Phalloceros titthos has been published, and FishBase carries no populated biology or feeding record for the species, so its feeding ecology is inferred rather than observed. FishBase assigns it a modelled trophic level of about 3.0, which places it among small omnivores and micro-predators rather than strict herbivores or piscivores.

By the general biology of the genus and of small coastal poeciliids, P. titthos can be expected to graze and pick at the surface films and substrates of its creeks — taking algae, organic detritus, diatoms and small aquatic invertebrates, including insect larvae such as mosquito larvae, much as its relatives do. Like other Phalloceros it is presumably an opportunistic feeder, adjusting to whatever small food items the habitat offers through the season.

In the rare event it is kept, the species would almost certainly accept the standard small-livebearer fare — fine flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia and newly hatched brine shrimp, with a share of algal matter. This, however, is an extrapolation from congeners rather than a documented husbandry record for titthos itself.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Phalloceros titthos reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium — a slender, mobile intromittent organ formed from elongated and specialised anal-fin rays — through which sperm is transferred directly to the female. In titthos the male anal fin carries the reduced ray count characteristic of the gonopodium (about nine rays, versus eleven in the unmodified female anal fin), and a gonopodial appendix hook is present, one of the structural details Lucinda used in diagnosing species across the genus.

Mating behaviour has not been described for this species specifically; no adult males were available for some parts of the original description, and the fine structure of the gonopodial tip went unrecorded. In the genus generally, small dull-coloured males pursue the larger females and attempt copulation using the gonopodium, with much of the species-level distinctiveness residing in the gonopodial hardware rather than in elaborate courtship colour or display.

The marked sexual size dimorphism — females roughly twice the length of males — and the female-only symphyseal and urogenital papillae are the visible expressions of this internally fertilising, livebearing reproductive system. Beyond these anatomical facts, the details of pairing and mate choice in P. titthos remain undocumented.

Breeding

Phalloceros titthos is a livebearer: like the rest of the Poeciliidae it is viviparous, the female retaining fertilised eggs internally and giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. No brood counts, gestation periods or fry data have been published for this particular species — FishBase carries no reproduction record — so the specifics of its breeding are genuinely data-sparse and should not be invented.

What can be said comes from the biology of the genus. Phalloceros are understood to be lecithotrophic livebearers, meaning the developing embryos are nourished by their own yolk reserves rather than by a placenta-like maternal supply, and there is no documented superfetation (the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages) in the genus. Gestation, brood size and the interval between broods for titthos itself remain unrecorded.

As with its congeners, females presumably store sperm and produce successive broods of small, fully formed fry that are independent at birth. Anyone working with the species would have to rely on these genus-level expectations, and on careful observation, rather than on any published account specific to P. titthos.

In the aquarium

Phalloceros titthos is essentially a scientific rather than an aquarium fish. It is not part of the ornamental trade, has no recorded hobby strains, and FishBase lists no aquarium data for it; what little is known comes from museum collections and the original revision. Any keeping notes are therefore extrapolated from the genus and from small coastal poeciliids in general, not drawn from documented experience with this species.

On that basis it would be expected to behave like other small Phalloceros — an undemanding, peaceful, shoaling micro-livebearer suited to a small, well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration, dense marginal and floating vegetation, and warm water in the tropical range typical of its lowland Brazilian creeks. Heavy planting would serve the double purpose of cover for adults and refuge for fry, since livebearer fry are vulnerable to predation by their own kind.

Given the absence of published husbandry, the honest position is that care requirements for P. titthos are not established. It would most plausibly be a specialist's or biotope-keeper's fish rather than a community-tank ornamental, and prospective keepers should treat any guidance as inference from its relatives.

Conservation

Phalloceros titthos is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment 1821149, species ID 186972), the category for species considered widespread or abundant enough not to qualify as threatened. It is not listed under CITES or CMS, and faces no documented species-specific harvest pressure; FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as very low and its resilience as high, with an estimated population-doubling time of under fifteen months.

That said, the species' range is genuinely narrow — a short stretch of Paraná coastal drainages around the Guaratuba and Paranaguá bays — which means its fate is tied to the health of a small number of lowland Atlantic-Forest watercourses. Coastal development, pollution and habitat alteration in this densely settled part of southern Brazil are the kinds of pressures that bear on any small-range freshwater endemic, even one not presently flagged as threatened.

For an aquarist the practical conservation note is the opposite of the one that applies to invasive livebearers like the guppy: titthos is a localised wild endemic, not a tradable ornamental, and there is no reason it should ever be released outside its native creeks. Its main value is scientific and biogeographic, as one strand of the surprising diversity that Lucinda's revision revealed within what had long looked like a single common species.
