Phallotorynus psittakos is a tiny South American livebearer known from the lower Rio Paraguay drainage, described in 2005 as part of a revision of its small and little-known genus. Barely two centimetres long, it is one of the diminutive internally fertilising poeciliines of the Paraguay and Paraná systems — fishes whose males carry an elaborate gonopodium and a battery of fine anatomical characters that ichthyologists rely on to tell the species apart. The species epithet plays on the river itself: psittakos is Greek for a parrot, a nod to the Guaraní name Paraguay, the "Parrot River." Almost unknown in the aquarium hobby, it is documented mainly through the systematic literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Phallotorynus psittakos was described by Paulo Lucinda, Roberto Reis and co-author in 2005, in a revision of the genus published in Copeia (Lucinda, Rosa & Reis, 2005, Copeia 2005(3):609–631). That paper, "Systematics and Biogeography of the Genus Phallotorynus Henn 1916 (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae: Poeciliinae)," diagnosed three new species at once and placed the genus within the Poeciliinae, the New World livebearers, in the family Poeciliidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid fish names — treats Phallotorynus psittakos Lucinda, Rosa & Reis, 2005 as a valid species.

The genus Phallotorynus was erected by Henn in 1916 and comprises a small clade of South American poeciliines restricted to the Rio Paraguay and upper Rio Paraná systems. The species are separated largely on the fine structure of the male gonopodium and associated anal-fin supports, together with body colour pattern. Phallotorynus psittakos is diagnosed by an autapomorphy — a unique derived feature — namely a very large lateral process on the base of the fifth median anal-fin radial in adult males, a detail of the gonopodial skeleton not shared with its congeners.

The taxonomy carries one caveat worth flagging. FishBase records a remark that Meyer & Etzel (2006) regarded P. psittakos as a junior synonym of Phallotorynus victoriae (Oliveros, 1983); however, both the Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN Red List continue to treat psittakos as a valid, distinct species, and that is the position followed here. Data on this fish remain sparse, and most of what is known traces back to the original 2005 revision.

Morphology

Phallotorynus psittakos is a very small fish. The original description gives a maximum standard length of about 0.5 in for males and unsexed specimens and roughly 1 in for females, making it one of the smaller poeciliids and well within the size range typical of its genus. Meristic counts recorded for the species include 7–8 dorsal soft rays, 9–10 anal soft rays, 31–32 vertebrae, 13 epipleural ribs, and 9 gonopodial rays.

The colour pattern is comparatively plain and is used diagnostically within the genus. Phallotorynus psittakos carries a single spot on the flank, in contrast to the spotless Phallotorynus fasciolatus at one extreme and to Phallotorynus pankalos, which bears a series of six to nine spots, at the other. As in the genus generally, sexual dimorphism centres on the male anal fin: males develop the gonopodium, the modified intromittent organ of poeciliids, and it is the skeletal architecture supporting that organ — specifically the very large lateral process on the fifth median anal-fin radial — that uniquely identifies adult males of this species.

Detailed external descriptions beyond these characters are not widely available; the species is documented chiefly through the systematic literature rather than through hobbyist or photographic records, so finer points of live coloration and ontogenetic change are not well reported (data sparse).

Habitat

Phallotorynus psittakos is known from the lower Rio Paraguay drainage in Paraguay, in north-eastern South America's interior. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of tropical climates. The lower Paraguay is a large lowland river system of slow and meandering channels, oxbows, floodplain lagoons and associated small waters, and small poeciliines of this kind are typically found in shallow, well-vegetated marginal habitats rather than the main channel.

The specific epithet alludes directly to this distribution: psittakos is Greek for a parrot, chosen because the fish is restricted to the Rio Paraguay, whose name derives from the Guaraní paraguá-i, the "Parrot River." The genus as a whole is confined to the Rio Paraguay and upper Rio Paraná basins, so this species occupies the lower, Paraguayan portion of that range.

Such fishes generally graze more or less continuously through the day.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Phallotorynus psittakos reproduces by internal fertilisation. Males possess a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — through which sperm is transferred to the female; the species has nine gonopodial rays, and the elaboration of the gonopodial skeleton is the principal feature used to identify it. There is no egg-laying and no external spawning: fertilisation takes place inside the female.

The genus Phallotorynus is notable for the structural complexity of the male copulatory apparatus, and the systematic revision that named this species leaned heavily on these gonopodial characters precisely because they are species-specific. In small poeciliines of this kind, mating typically involves the male approaching and attempting to inseminate the female using the gonopodium rather than building nests or defending territories.

Species-level behavioural detail — courtship display, mate choice, and whether females retain stored sperm for successive broods, as many poeciliids do — has not been documented for P. psittakos and would have to be inferred from relatives (data sparse).

Breeding

Phallotorynus psittakos is viviparous: as a poeciliid it bears live, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs, the developing embryos being carried internally by the female after fertilisation through the male's gonopodium. This much follows directly from its family placement and from the genus's reproductive biology.

FishBase rates the species as having high resilience, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months — a figure that reflects the rapid reproduction typical of small livebearers, which mature quickly and produce repeated broods. Many poeciliids also exhibit superfetation, the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, but whether P. psittakos does so is not reported.

In the aquarium

Phallotorynus psittakos is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. No species-specific care or breeding profile could be located, including on specialist livebearer resources, and the genus as a whole is rare in cultivation. There is no established husbandry record to draw on.

If it were maintained, the general requirements of small tropical Paraguay-basin poeciliines would apply: warm, clean, well-filtered water; densely planted shallow surroundings that mimic vegetated stream margins and give a fish under two centimetres places to shelter; and small foods sized for a tiny mouth, such as microworm, newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered prepared foods. As with other small livebearers, the adults would likely predate their own fry, so cover or separation would be needed to raise young.

These are extrapolations from the husbandry of comparable small poeciliines, not documented care parameters for this species; anyone keeping it would be working largely without a literature to lean on (data sparse).

Conservation

Phallotorynus psittakos is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment 1825474, species ID 187257), reflecting a judgement that the species is not currently at risk. FishBase likewise rates it of low vulnerability to fishing pressure (around 10 out of 100) and of high biological resilience.

The species' main vulnerability is the flip side of that assessment: it is a small-range endemic of the lower Rio Paraguay drainage, so its fortunes are tied to the condition of that one river system. Habitat alteration in lowland South American river basins — through agriculture, water management, pollution and the spread of introduced species — is a general pressure on such restricted, vegetation-dependent fishes, even where a species is presently classed as Least Concern.
