Phallotorynus jucundus is one of the smallest and least-known of the New World livebearers — a fingernail-length poeciliid endemic to the Grande River drainage of the upper Paraná basin in south-eastern Brazil. Like all of its family it bears live young, the males equipped with the modified anal-fin organ that gives the genus its name, but unlike the cosmopolitan guppy this is a narrowly distributed fish of clear savanna streams, assessed as Endangered and almost absent from the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Phallotorynus jucundus was described by the German-Brazilian zoologist Rodolpho von Ihering in 1930. It belongs to the genus Phallotorynus, a small assemblage of Neotropical poeciliids endemic to the river drainages of south-eastern Brazil, within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phallotorynus jucundus Ihering, 1930 as the valid name.

The genus Phallotorynus was substantially revised in the modern literature, with the relationships and species limits of its members re-examined on the basis of the distinctive gonopodial anatomy that characterises the group. The checklist of South American Poeciliidae by Lucinda (2003), published in the Reis, Kullander and Ferraris Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (CLOFFSCA), provides the principal taxonomic framework for the species. P. jucundus is distinguished from its congeners chiefly by the fine structure of the male gonopodium together with a colour pattern of dark, rounded spots along the lower half of the body — a spot pattern it shares with the closely allied P. pankalos.

The common names attached to the species are sparse. English-language databases list it as the "Antler toothcarp," while in Brazil the small livebearers of this kind are known generically by the Portuguese folk names barrigudinho ("little pot-belly") and guaru, terms applied broadly to native poeciliids rather than to this species alone.

Morphology

Phallotorynus jucundus is a very small fish. Males reach a maximum of about 1 in in standard length, with females growing slightly larger, to roughly 1 in. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the typical poeciliine fashion, and the recorded length-weight relationship (a ≈ 0.01047, b ≈ 3.14, from FishBase) reflects a lightly built, near-isometric little fish.

The most diagnostic external feature is the colour pattern: a row of six to nine dark brown, rounded spots running along the lower half of the flank. This pattern is shared with the congener P. pankalos, and the two are separated reliably only by details of the male gonopodium. The dorsal fin carries nine or ten rays. As in other members of the genus, the body is otherwise translucent to pale, without the bright pigment of a domesticated livebearer.

The defining structure of the genus, and the source of its name, is the male gonopodium — the intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays, here bearing the distinctive terminal appendix that taxonomists use to separate Phallotorynus species. Because so much of the genus's identification rests on this organ, the fine gonopodial morphology is the single most informative character for confirming P. jucundus.

Habitat

Phallotorynus jucundus is endemic to the Grande River drainage in the upper Paraná basin of south-eastern Brazil. It is a freshwater, pelagic fish of small streams, associated in the IUCN assessment with the savanna and freshwater-stream habitats of that drainage. Its range is restricted — the small area of occupancy is the explicit basis for its Endangered listing under criterion B2.

The water it occupies is near-neutral to mildly alkaline and soft to moderately hard: FishBase records a pH of roughly 7.0 to 7.5 and a hardness of about 2 to 15 dGH. As a subtropical species of the Brazilian highlands, it lives in cooler water than most tropical livebearers, with a reported temperature range of about 68–77 °F.

The combination of a naturally small range, a specific stream habitat, and a continuing decline in habitat quality is what places the species under threat. The IUCN notes a declining population trend, with the deterioration of its restricted savanna-stream habitat the central conservation concern.

Feeding

Direct dietary studies of Phallotorynus jucundus are sparse. FishBase places the species at an estimated trophic level of about 3.0, which is consistent with the small-invertebrate-and-detritus feeding typical of small poeciliids rather than strict herbivory or piscivory.

By the general ecology of its relatives, a stream-dwelling poeciliine of this size can be expected to take small drifting and benthic invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and associated algal and detrital material from the water column and substrate surface. As a small surface-and-midwater fish it is well placed to feed on items drifting at or near the surface.

No aquarium feeding regime is established for the species, given its near-total absence from the hobby. Any captive care would reasonably follow the pattern proven for small native Brazilian livebearers: frequent small feedings of fine flake and micro-foods supplemented with small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia and newly hatched brine shrimp. This remains an inference from related species rather than documented practice.

Mating

Like all Poeciliidae, Phallotorynus jucundus reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin; in this genus the gonopodium carries a distinctive terminal appendix, and its detailed morphology is the principal taxonomic character separating the species.

Mating behaviour specific to P. jucundus has not been documented in the literature available, but the mechanics are those shared across the livebearing poeciliines: there is no nest and no external spawning. Males approach and inseminate females directly, and internal fertilisation removes the egg-scattering stage entirely. Many poeciliid females are capable of storing sperm internally and producing successive broods from a single insemination, though the extent of sperm storage and the courtship repertoire have not been described for this particular species.

Given the small body size of both sexes and the slight size advantage of the female, the species fits the general poeciliine pattern of small, plain females and males whose reproductive specialisation is concentrated in the gonopodium rather than in elaborate display pigment.

Breeding

Phallotorynus jucundus is viviparous: the female carries the developing young internally and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. The genus follows lecithotrophic viviparity — the developing embryos are nourished chiefly from yolk, with matrotrophy (substantial maternal provisioning during gestation) not documented for Phallotorynus.

Brood sizes have not been published for P. jucundus specifically, but small poeciliines of this size characteristically produce modest broods, on the order of a few young at a time rather than the dozens a large guppy can deliver. Whether the species shows superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, which occurs in some poeciliids — is not established in the sources available, and is best left noted as unknown rather than assumed.

The species is regarded as having high biological resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of under 15 months, which reflects the rapid maturation and continuous reproduction typical of small livebearers even where individual broods are small. As with the rest of its reproductive biology, the fine details — gestation length, exact brood size, fry size at birth — remain undescribed for this poorly studied species, and the prudent summary is that data are sparse.

In the aquarium

Phallotorynus jucundus is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a tiny, range-restricted Brazilian native rather than a trade fish, and there is no established body of captive husbandry for it. It is harmless to humans and of low fishing vulnerability, but it is not a fish a hobbyist is likely to encounter.

Were it kept — as occasionally happens with native Brazilian livebearers in specialist hands — its requirements would follow from its wild habitat: cool to moderate temperatures around 68–77 °F, near-neutral water at pH 7.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard conditions (roughly 2 to 15 dGH). Its very small adult size and its origin in clear, flowing savanna streams point to a well-oxygenated, planted, gently flowing setup with no large or boisterous tankmates.

Because the species is Endangered and narrowly distributed, the responsible position is that any captive interest should rest on legitimately sourced, captive-bred stock rather than on wild collection. For nearly all aquarists this is a fish to read about rather than to keep.

Conservation

Phallotorynus jucundus is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B2ab(iii), in an assessment dated 2018. The listing reflects a small area of occupancy combined with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat — the classic profile of a narrow-range endemic under pressure from habitat degradation.

The species is confined to the Grande River drainage of the upper Paraná basin, where its savanna-stream habitat is vulnerable to the land-use changes and water-quality decline that affect freshwater systems across south-eastern Brazil. The IUCN records a declining population trend. A naturally restricted range leaves little margin: degradation concentrated within a small geographic area can threaten a large fraction of the global population at once.

The conservation story here is the opposite of the guppy's. Where widespread livebearers are a concern because they spread and invade, P. jucundus is a concern because it is hemmed into a single, deteriorating drainage. Its protection depends on the integrity of the Grande River streams it inhabits rather than on anything an aquarist does, and the species stands as a reminder that the Poeciliidae include narrowly endemic, genuinely threatened fishes alongside the hardy, ubiquitous ones.
