Phallotorynus fasciolatus is a tiny, almost ghostly livebearer known from only a scatter of museum specimens collected in the Atlantic Forest headwaters of São Paulo, Brazil — and not reliably seen alive since 1967. Described by Arthur Henn in 1916 from the upper Rio Paraíba do Sul, it is one of the small South American poeciliids whose males carry an intricately ornamented gonopodium, the feature that gave the genus its name. Today the species is assessed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct), a casualty of the deforestation and urban expansion that have all but erased its headwater habitat; the data on its life are correspondingly sparse, drawn largely from the type series and the few later collections.

Taxonomy & naming

Phallotorynus fasciolatus was described by Arthur Wilbur Henn in 1916, based on material from the upper Rio Paraíba do Sul basin near Jacareí, in the state of São Paulo, south-eastern Brazil. It is the type species of the genus Phallotorynus, a small group of South American poeciliids defined chiefly by the elaborate structure of the male copulatory organ. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phallotorynus fasciolatus Henn, 1916 as the valid name, placing it in the family Poeciliidae (subfamily Poeciliinae) within the order Cyprinodontiformes, the killifishes and livebearers.

The genus name is built from Greek roots — phallos (penis), otos (ear) and rhinos (nose) — a compound that refers to the complex, ear- and nose-like lateral processes on the tip of the male's gonopodium, the diagnostic feature of the group. The species epithet fasciolatus, from Latin, means "finely banded" or "with small bands." In Brazil the fish is known by the Portuguese names Barrigudinho and Guaru-listrado-da-cabeceira (roughly, "striped headwater guaru"); the English book name in the aquarium literature is "Thinstribed toothcarp."

Much of what is recorded about the species rests on a very small body of material — no more than about thirty known specimens, including Henn's original type series from the Paraíba do Sul basin and a set collected in 1967 in the Rio Tietê basin at Paranapiacaba. A single 1975 record from the Rio Nhundiaquara in Paraná was made without a preserved voucher and has been discounted, so the verified range is confined to two São Paulo drainages.

Morphology

Phallotorynus fasciolatus is a very small fish even by poeciliid standards. Females reach only about 1 in in standard length, and the much smaller males about 0.5 in; the older aquarium literature (Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers) lists a maximum of roughly 1 in SL for males and unsexed fish and 1.5 in for females. The body is slender and the species shows the pronounced sexual dimorphism typical of the family, with the male carrying the modified anal-fin gonopodium and the female being larger and plainer.

The species is distinguished from its congeners by two main features. It lacks the rounded dark blotches that mark the sides of some other Phallotorynus, and it has distinctive lateral expansions on the terminal appendix of the gonopodium — the ornate processes that give the genus its name and that are the principal characters used to separate the species in this group. As in other poeciliids, fine details of the male intromittent organ, rather than overall body colour, carry most of the taxonomic weight.

Beyond these points the morphological record is thin. No photograph of the living fish is held by FishBase, and the colour pattern in life is poorly documented; the epithet fasciolatus ("finely banded") hints at a pattern of slender bars, consistent with the Portuguese common name "guaru-listrado." With so few specimens available, much of the species' soft-tissue and colour biology must be regarded as data sparse.

Habitat

All verified records of Phallotorynus fasciolatus come from headwater areas of the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) in São Paulo state — the upper Rio Paraíba do Sul basin near Jacareí and the upper Rio Tietê basin at Paranapiacaba (the Alto da Serra region). These are small, high-gradient streams and creeks draining the coastal escarpment, and the species is classed as an inhabitant of permanent inland rivers, streams and creeks.

No direct ecological data were ever gathered for the fish itself. By analogy with its congeners — which typically occupy semi-lentic, slow-moving waters rich in aquatic macrophytes — it is inferred that Phallotorynus fasciolatus lived in vegetated, slow stretches of these Atlantic Forest headwaters. FishBase characterises it broadly as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical species. Given the small size and the headwater setting, it was almost certainly a fish of shallow, well-shaded creeks.

The waters of this region are soft, warm and tropical, but specific measurements for the species' actual collection sites are not recorded, so any temperature or pH figures should be read as general tropical-stream conditions rather than measured habitat values. The defining feature of the habitat, in conservation terms, is its fragility: these are exactly the kinds of headwater streams most exposed to riparian deforestation and urban encroachment around the São Paulo metropolitan region.

Feeding

There is no published dietary study for Phallotorynus fasciolatus, and its feeding habits are inferred rather than observed. FishBase assigns it a modelled trophic level of about 3.0 (±0.4), a value extrapolated from its relatives rather than measured from stomach contents, placing it among small omnivores and micro-predators.

Small poeciliids of this kind generally feed on a mixture of algae, diatoms and detritus together with tiny aquatic invertebrates, micro-crustaceans, and insect larvae taken from the water column and from among plants. In a vegetated headwater stream, such a fish would have grazed surface films and macrophytes and picked at small drifting and benthic prey. Beyond this general picture, the diet of this particular species is best treated as data sparse.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Phallotorynus fasciolatus practices internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium — a slender, mobile intromittent organ formed from elongated and specialised fin rays — through which sperm (packaged as spermatozeugmata) is transferred directly to the female. In this genus the gonopodium is especially elaborate, bearing the lateral processes on its terminal appendix that distinguish the species and that give Phallotorynus its name.

No courtship behaviour has been described for the species specifically. In poeciliids generally, small males use a combination of brief courtship display and direct gonopodial copulation to inseminate females, and females of many species can store sperm internally for extended periods, allowing several broods to follow a single mating. Whether Phallotorynus fasciolatus shows the kind of sneak-mating and female-choice dynamics documented in better-studied genera such as Poecilia is unknown.

The marked sexual dimorphism — small, gonopodium-bearing males and larger, plainer females — is the visible signature of this internal-fertilisation system and is the chief way the sexes are told apart.

Breeding

Phallotorynus fasciolatus is viviparous (a true livebearer), as are the other members of the family: after internal fertilisation the female retains the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. This reproductive mode is one of the few firmly established facts about the species' life history, inferred from its membership in the Poeciliidae and noted explicitly in the IUCN assessment.

No brood size, gestation length or growth data have been recorded for the species. In small poeciliids broods are typically modest — from a handful to a few dozen fry — and gestation runs on the order of a few weeks, lengthening in cooler water; whether this species shows superfetation (carrying overlapping broods at different stages of development), which occurs in some poeciliids, is not known and cannot be assumed. All of these reproductive details should be read as data sparse for this fish.

Its livebearing biology has one practical consequence that the conservation assessment highlights: because viviparous poeciliids can in principle be propagated readily in captivity, ex-situ captive breeding has been suggested as a viable safeguard — if any living population could still be located.

In the aquarium

Phallotorynus fasciolatus is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is known only from a handful of museum specimens, has not been reliably collected alive since 1967, and is assessed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct). There is no established hobby strain, no aquarium husbandry literature specific to the species, and no legitimate trade in it.

The entry of its book name into the older livebearer literature (Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers of the World) reflects taxonomic and museum coverage rather than any tradition of keeping the fish. Were a population ever rediscovered, its small size, livebearing reproduction and apparent preference for vegetated, slow headwater water would suggest a heavily planted, gently filtered, warm tropical setup — but this is extrapolation from its relatives, not tested practice.

The more meaningful aquarist note is a conservation one: the assessment records the invasive guppy (Poecilia reticulata) near Jacareí as a potential competitor, a reminder that released aquarium livebearers are themselves part of the pressure on small native poeciliids like this one.

Conservation

Phallotorynus fasciolatus is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) under criterion D, in an assessment carried out by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. The estimated number of mature individuals is given as 0–49, the population is severely fragmented across just two locations, the trend is decreasing, and the extent of occurrence is no more than about 311 mi². The year the species was last seen is recorded as 1967.

The drivers of its decline are the destruction of the Atlantic Forest headwaters it depended on: deforestation of riparian and forest vegetation through urban expansion, agriculture and industry around the São Paulo region, compounded secondarily by water pollution and by introduced species — including the invasive guppy noted near Jacareí. Repeated targeted sampling at both the Jacareí and Paranapiacaba sites has failed to recover the fish, which is why the assessment flags it as possibly extinct.

Some conservation scaffolding nonetheless exists. The species is a target of Brazil's National Action Plan (PAN) for the aquatic species of the Rio Paraíba do Sul, and one of its historical sites lies within the Reserva Biológica do Alto da Serra de Paranapiacaba, a protected area. The assessment notes that, because the fish is a livebearer, ex-situ captive breeding would be a feasible recovery tool — contingent entirely on whether any surviving population can still be found.
