The Pacific molly is the molly of Mexico's Pacific watershed — a hardy, plain-to-reticulated livebearer that ranges down the western slope from the Río Fuerte to the streams of Central America. Poecilia butleri is less famous than its Atlantic-slope cousins, but it is a thoroughly adaptable fish, equally at home in slow lowland creeks, brackish estuaries and even the margins of ocean bays. In the aquarium it is a robust, faintly pugnacious livebearer best known to specialist hobbyists, and its wild populations carry both a simple silvery form and a heavily spotted "reticulated" pattern that has earned it a quiet following among molly keepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia butleri was described by the American ichthyologist David Starr Jordan in 1889. The specific epithet honours Amos William Butler (1860–1937), an American naturalist; the genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, meaning many-coloured or dappled, a reference to the variegated patterning common across these fishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poecilia butleri Jordan, 1889 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, and the subfamily Poeciliinae.

The family Poeciliidae gathers the guppies, mollies, swordtails, platies, mosquitofishes and their relatives — small, internally fertilising, mostly live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas, in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Within Poecilia, P. butleri belongs to the molly group, the larger-bodied, often herbivorous members of the genus, and is the principal molly of the Pacific drainages of western Mexico and adjacent Central America. The English name Pacific molly and the Spanish topote del Pacífico both reflect that geography.

Morphology

Poecilia butleri is a small livebearer with the typical molly build: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, an upturned mouth suited to surface and substrate grazing, and a rounded caudal fin. FishBase records a maximum length of about 3 in total length for males and unsexed fish and roughly 3 in TL for females, with females the larger and deeper-bodied sex; in the aquarium, mature fish are commonly smaller, with males around 1.5 in and females reaching perhaps 3 in.

The species is sexually dimorphic in the manner characteristic of poeciliids. Males are slimmer and bear a gonopodium — the modified, rod-like anal fin used to transfer sperm internally — while females are fuller-bodied and develop a darkened gravid region when carrying young. Wild populations occur in two colour forms: a plain silvery type and a heavily spotted or "reticulated" variety in which dark speckling overlays the flanks. The reticulated form is the one that has attracted hobbyist interest, but both occur naturally across the range.

Habitat

Poecilia butleri is a freshwater, benthopelagic, non-migratory fish of the Pacific slope of Mexico and Central America, ranging from the Río Fuerte basin in north-western Mexico southward to the Río Comasagua region, with the broader distribution given by FishBase as Central America from Mexico to Panama. Numerous introductions outside its original range have been reported, so its present distribution is not strictly natural everywhere it occurs.

The species is markedly adaptable in its choice of water. It is found in a wide variety of standing and flowing waters and shows a clear preference for habitats with dense algal growth and other aquatic vegetation, the food and cover that suit a grazing livebearer. Hobbyist accounts describe it occupying everything from slow-flowing streams to estuaries and even ocean bays, underscoring a tolerance of salinity that is common among mollies. FishBase gives a tropical temperature range of about 73–81 °F, a pH of 7.0–7.8 and a hardness of 6–20 dH for the species.

Feeding

Like other wild mollies, Poecilia butleri leans toward the herbivorous and detritivorous end of the poeciliid diet — FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.5, consistent with a fish that grazes algae and processes plant and decaying matter. Its documented preference for waters rich in algal growth and aquatic vegetation reflects this; in the wild it would be expected to take algae, diatoms, and associated plant and decaying material, much as related mollies do, together with whatever small invertebrates it encounters while grazing. No dedicated wild gut-content study is cited in the sources consulted, so the precise wild diet is reported here only in general terms.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and readily accepts prepared foods, taking flake and small pellets without difficulty. As with mollies generally, a diet that includes a substantial vegetable or algal component — algae-based flake, blanched greens, and grazing on aufwuchs — supports good health and colour, and several small feedings suit a near-constant grazer better than a single large meal.

Mating

Poecilia butleri reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining trait of the live-bearing poeciliids. The male uses the gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — to transfer sperm to the female. As in related livebearers, courtship and mating are more or less continuous rather than seasonal or territorial, and females are capable of storing viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to develop from a single insemination.

Males of this species are described by hobbyists as comparatively rough: P. butleri is a fairly aggressive, "chippy" livebearer in which males can be tough on females. This persistent pursuit of females is typical of the genus, and in practical terms it means a keeper benefits from providing cover and keeping a sex ratio that spreads male attention across several females rather than concentrating it on one. Superfetation — the carrying of broods at multiple developmental stages simultaneously — is documented in some poeciliids but is not confirmed for P. butleri in the sources consulted, so it is not asserted here.

Breeding

Poecilia butleri is viviparous, giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a brood of 20 to 60 young produced after a gestation period of about 28 days, the developing embryos being carried internally until they are delivered as fully formed, independent fry. As with other poeciliids, brood size scales with the size and condition of the female, and stored sperm can fuel multiple successive broods.

In practice this is not regarded as one of the easier wild-type mollies to breed. Hobbyist experience notes that males are rough on females and that adults readily prey on their own fry, so newborns are vulnerable in an open tank; the fry are weak swimmers and in the wild are likely dropped into heavily planted, shallow margins where cover protects them. Breeders accordingly rely on dense planting or fry traps to raise good numbers — one reported female delivered nine fry into a fry trap. Newborn fry are large enough to take finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp from the outset and grow into the gonopodium and adult colour over the following weeks.

In the aquarium

The Pacific molly is a hardy and adaptable aquarium fish, but it is not the placid community livebearer that its guppy and platy relatives are. Hobbyists describe it as fairly aggressive for a livebearer — "chippy" — with males that can be tough on females and on one another. It is best given a tank of at least 10 US gal, and more for a group, with plenty of cover to break lines of sight and give harassed fish refuge. A sex ratio weighted toward females helps spread male attention and reduce wear on any single individual.

Water chemistry should follow the species' wild tolerances: neutral to slightly alkaline water around pH 7.0–7.8, moderate to hard at 6–20 dH, and a tropical temperature of roughly 73–81 °F. Like many mollies it tolerates a degree of salinity and is comfortable in hard, mineral-rich water. It is otherwise undemanding, takes prepared foods readily, and rewards a keeper who provides space, cover and a vegetable-inclusive diet. Its appeal lies less in beginner-friendliness than in being a robust, characterful wild molly with a naturally occurring reticulated form.

Conservation

Poecilia butleri is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment ID 191743), reflecting a widespread, adaptable species that occupies a broad range of habitats across the Pacific slope of Mexico and Central America and faces no significant range-wide threat. FishBase rates its resilience as medium and its vulnerability to fishing as low. The species is used commercially both as a food fish in local fisheries and in the aquarium trade.

As with other hardy, fecund livebearers, the more relevant concern is the species' capacity to establish outside its native range: numerous introductions of P. butleri have been reported, so populations now occur where they are not naturally present. The responsible position for an aquarist is therefore the familiar one for adaptable livebearers — never to release unwanted fish into local waters, where so tolerant and prolific a species could readily take hold.
