Poecilia boesemani is a little-known Trinidadian member of the guppy lineage, described only in 2003 from the Maraval River that runs down to Port of Spain. It belongs to the same close-knit group of small live-bearing toothcarps as the familiar guppy and Endler's livebearer, yet it has never entered the aquarium mainstream and remains poorly documented in the wild. Named for the Dutch ichthyologist Marinus Boeseman, it is a reminder that even the heavily worked guppy group of the West Indies still holds species whose basic biology is only sparsely recorded.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia boesemani was described by F. N. Poeser in 2003 as part of a broader revision of the guppy-group poeciliids of northern South America and the West Indies, a study that disentangled several superficially guppy-like forms that had long been lumped together. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poecilia boesemani Poeser, 2003 as a valid name, placing it in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers. It sits in the guppy assemblage of the genus — the group that also contains Poecilia reticulata and Poecilia wingei (Endler's livebearer) — and shares that group's affinities with the old subgeneric names Acanthophacelus and Lebistes that recur in the historical guppy literature.

The family Poeciliidae unites the guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails and mosquitofishes — small, internally fertilising, mostly live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas. Within Poecilia the boundaries between closely allied guppy-group species can be subtle, and the practical separation of P. boesemani from the wild guppies of Trinidad rests on the careful morphological work of the original description rather than on any single obvious field character. Because the species is recent and uncommon in collections, its synonymy is short and its taxonomic history is correspondingly thin compared with the much-revised guppy.

The common name on record is the "Maraval toothcarp," after its type locality. It should not be confused with the unrelated rainbowfish Melanotaenia boesemani, which carries the same patronymic but belongs to a wholly different family on the other side of the world.

Morphology

Poecilia boesemani is a small guppy-group livebearer, and like its relatives it shows the pronounced sexual dimorphism characteristic of the lineage: males are smaller and bear the modified anal fin, while females are larger and plainer in build. Precise size data for the species are sparse — FishBase carries no populated maximum-length figure — so the safest statement is that it falls within the small-bodied range typical of guppy-group Poecilia rather than any exact measurement that cannot be sourced.

The diagnostic male structure, as in all poeciliids, is the gonopodium: a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to deliver sperm internally. Females lack this structure, are deeper-bodied, and develop a darkened gravid region toward the rear of the abdomen when carrying young. Beyond these shared poeciliid traits, the fine-scale features that distinguish P. boesemani from neighbouring Trinidadian guppy-group fishes are matters of the original morphometric description; this atlas does not assert specific colour or meristic claims that the cached sources do not support.

Habitat

The type locality of Poecilia boesemani is the Maraval River at Port of Spain, on the island of Trinidad, and the species is recorded from Trinidad and Tobago. (FishBase lists it under a "Central America" regional heading, but the type material and field-guide records place it firmly in the Trinidadian freshwaters.) Like other guppy-group fishes of the island, it is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of warm tropical lowland and coastal streams.

Detailed habitat measurements for this particular species are not well documented. Aquarist-reported parameters for wild Trinidadian guppy-group Poecilia generally describe warm water broadly in the low-to-high 20s Celsius and soft to moderately hard, near-neutral to mildly acidic or alkaline freshwater of lowland streams — but these are hobby-grade generalisations for the assemblage, not species-specific limnological data for P. boesemani, and should be read as such. Given its small range on a single island, the species is best regarded as a narrowly distributed Trinidadian endemic whose ecology remains thinly recorded.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study is available for Poecilia boesemani, so its feeding biology is inferred from the guppy group to which it belongs. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 2.6, consistent with an omnivore that leans only slightly toward animal matter — the same broadly omnivorous, micro-predatory pattern seen across the guppy lineage.

In practice that means a wild diet of algae and detritus, diatoms, small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae taken from the surface and water column, with the balance shifting according to what each stream offers. In the unusual event of captive maintenance, fish of this group accept small prepared foods and a range of small live and frozen items, and benefit from some plant or algal content, but because P. boesemani is essentially absent from the aquarium trade these are extrapolations from its relatives rather than husbandry experience with the species itself.

Mating

As a poeciliid, Poecilia boesemani reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays that defines the family; fertilisation and the early development of the young therefore take place inside the female rather than in the open water. This is the shared reproductive architecture of the entire guppy group, and there is no published evidence that P. boesemani departs from it.

No detailed courtship study exists for this species. In the broader guppy lineage, males pursue females persistently and combine display courtship with sneak copulation attempts, and females can store viable sperm internally for some time, allowing successive broods from a single mating. Whether the specific display behaviour and mate-choice dynamics so famously documented in Poecilia reticulata apply in the same form to P. boesemani is simply not on record — the data are sparse, and this atlas does not extend the guppy's well-studied sexual selection to its relative beyond the basic mechanics they share.

Breeding

Poecilia boesemani is viviparous, like all members of the Poeciliinae: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. Reproduction in the guppy group is lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by their own yolk reserves rather than by a placenta-like maternal supply — and broods in guppy-group fishes of this size typically run on the order of roughly ten to fifty fry depending on the female's size, though no brood count specific to P. boesemani has been published.

Gestation in guppy-group livebearers lasts on the order of a few weeks and varies with temperature, and the newborn young emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed at once. Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different stages of development — is not documented for this species; that trait occurs in some other poeciliids such as Poeciliopsis and Heterandria but is not a feature of the guppy lineage to which P. boesemani belongs. Because the species is rarely if ever bred in captivity, the practical details of raising it are unrecorded, and the account above reflects the general reproductive pattern of its group rather than direct breeding observations.

In the aquarium

Poecilia boesemani is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and is not a hobby fish in any meaningful sense; it is known mainly from scientific collections rather than from aquaria. There is therefore no established body of husbandry experience for the species, and any care guidance can only be borrowed from the wider guppy group.

On that basis, a fish of this lineage would be expected to be a small, undemanding, surface-and-midwater livebearer suited to warm, clean freshwater in the low-to-high 20s Celsius and to be kept in groups — but these are extrapolations, offered with the caveat that they are not specific to P. boesemani. Given the species' narrow Trinidadian range and Data Deficient conservation status, the more important point for an aquarist is that it is a wild fish of conservation interest rather than a trade animal, and is not a fish to seek out for a community tank.

Conservation

Poecilia boesemani is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 4 May 2020 (species id 125978905). A Data Deficient listing means there is not yet enough information on the species' distribution, population or threats to judge its risk of extinction — an unsurprising status for a recently described, narrowly distributed Trinidadian fish that has attracted little dedicated study.

That uncertainty is itself the conservation message. The species is known from a small island range centred on the Maraval drainage near Port of Spain, where lowland and coastal streams are exposed to urban pressures, and where introduced guppy-group fishes and habitat change could plausibly affect a poorly monitored endemic. Until targeted survey work clarifies its range and abundance, P. boesemani is best treated with precaution: a little-known native of Trinidad whose status cannot yet be confirmed and which warrants further field assessment rather than collection.
