Poeciliopsis infans is the small, unassuming livebearer of Mexico's central highlands — the most widespread member of its genus and a fish so tolerant of degraded, weedy, oxygen-poor water that it persists where showier natives have vanished. Endemic to the Lerma–Grande de Santiago system and neighbouring west-Mexican drainages, this olive-bodied poeciliid grows to barely five centimetres, grazes detritus and diatoms from the littoral muck, and broadcasts brood after brood of fully formed fry into the shallows. It is rarely kept and rarely sold, but as a hardy, plain-coloured survivor of waters that humans have heavily altered, it is one of the quiet success stories among the Mexican toothcarps.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis infans was described by Albert J. Woolman in 1894 and is placed in the genus Poeciliopsis within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid combination, and the original genus assignment is reflected in the parenthetical authority "(Woolman, 1894)." The species belongs to the subfamily Poeciliinae, the internally fertilising, predominantly live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas, and sits within the order Cyprinodontiformes alongside the killifishes and other egg-laying and live-bearing groups.

The genus Poeciliopsis is a largely Mexican and Central American radiation of small livebearers, several of which are famous in biology for their unisexual, hybridogenetic lineages. Poeciliopsis infans is not one of the celebrated hybrid forms — it is a conventional, bisexual species — but it is the most broadly distributed member of the genus, ranging across the great Lerma–Grande de Santiago basin of the Mexican plateau and into adjacent west-flowing rivers. Its common names reflect that geography: in English it is the Lerma livebearer, and in Mexican usage the guatopote del Lerma, "guatopote" being the regional name for these small native poeciliids.

Morphology

Poeciliopsis infans is a small, plainly coloured livebearer. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 2 in SL for both sexes, and museum and field specimens examined in ecological studies have run from roughly 1–2 in standard length, so most fish encountered are well under the maximum. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed in the typical poeciliid manner, olive to brownish-grey above and paler below, without the bright pigmentation that draws aquarists to its relatives the guppies and platies. This drabness is camouflage suited to the turbid, vegetation-choked littoral waters the species favours.

As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ. Males are the smaller sex and carry the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays and used to transfer sperm to the female — while females grow larger and deeper-bodied, developing a visibly distended abdomen and a darkened gravid region when carrying young. Beyond the gonopodium and the size and body-depth difference, P. infans lacks the elaborate finnage or vivid male coloration of the better-known hobby livebearers; its sexual signalling, where present, is subtle rather than ornamental. Detailed published descriptions of fin counts and fine meristics for this species are sparse, and finer morphometric notes should be treated as data sparse.

Habitat

Poeciliopsis infans is endemic to central and western Mexico, native to the Lerma–Grande de Santiago river basin together with tributaries of the Ameca, Armería, Coahuayana and Balsas rivers, across the states of Jalisco, Michoacán and neighbouring areas. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of shallow water — FishBase records it from depths of roughly 0–3 ft — and it favours the highland plateau, typically around 1,0 ft and higher in elevation, in a tropical-to-subtropical climate with reported temperatures around 72–77 °F.

The species occupies standing and slow-flowing waters of many kinds: the stagnant, shallow margins of lakes, rivers, streams, springs, ponds and irrigation channels, generally close to shore and strongly associated with floating and emergent aquatic vegetation, including invasive water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in littoral zones. What sets P. infans apart is its tolerance: it is a notably hardy fish that persists in freshwater bodies suffering high environmental degradation, eutrophication and lowered water quality, conditions that exclude more sensitive natives. That same hardiness has made it a coloniser — it has been introduced outside its natural drainage, for example into Lago de Pátzcuaro in Michoacán (around 2,115 ft elevation), where it now forms part of the fish community.

Feeding

Poeciliopsis infans is an omnivore and, more precisely, a low-trophic-level grazer of the littoral bottom and the films that coat submerged surfaces. A trophic-ecology study in Lago de Pátzcuaro found the species feeding chiefly on detritus (around 44 percent of the diet) and epiphytic and benthic diatoms (around 37 percent), supplemented by terrestrial insects (about 6 percent) and zooplankton such as cladocerans and copepods (about 10 percent). Its calculated trophic level is low — near 2.2 by diet analysis and around 2.3 by stable-isotope methods — marking it as a primary consumer that mostly scrapes periphyton and processes detritus rather than hunting prey.

Like many poeciliids it shows considerable trophic plasticity: niche-breadth measures in the same study ranged from specialist to generalist depending on site and season, and larger individuals shifted toward eating more insects and macrophytes and less algae. This flexible, opportunistic diet is part of why the fish copes so well in disturbed and nutrient-loaded waters, where abundant detritus and algal growth provide a reliable food base. In the rare aquarium setting the species would be expected to accept the usual small prepared and frozen foods, but vegetable and algal matter should form a meaningful share of the diet to reflect its natural grazing habit.

Mating

Reproduction in Poeciliopsis infans is internal and live-bearing, the defining trait of the poeciliids. Fertilisation occurs inside the female after the male transfers sperm using his gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ; there is no external spawning and no egg deposition. Males pursue and attempt to inseminate females in the manner typical of the family, and as in other poeciliids females are able to store sperm internally, so a female may produce successive broods from earlier matings without needing to remate.

Detailed behavioural observations of courtship in this particular species are sparse, and the fish lacks the conspicuous male display coloration seen in guppies. Whether P. infans exhibits superfetation — the poeciliid capacity to carry multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — is not established in the readily available literature for this species and should be treated as data sparse rather than assumed; superfetation is documented in some Poeciliopsis but is not a universal feature of the genus. What is clear is the general pattern: continuous internal fertilisation, sperm storage, and live birth, producing the steady recruitment that underlies the species' abundance in suitable habitat.

Breeding

Poeciliopsis infans is viviparous, giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a gestation period of about 28 days, after which the female produces a brood of roughly 10 to 40 young. The newborn fry emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed immediately, a developmental head start that is one of the great advantages of live-bearing in small, predator- and competition-rich shallow-water habitats.

The species is a high-resilience breeder: FishBase classifies its population resilience as high, with a minimum population-doubling time of under 15 months, reflecting frequent reproduction, short generation time and large numbers of young relative to body size. Combined with the female's sperm-storage capacity and the species' broad environmental tolerance, this reproductive output lets P. infans rebuild and expand populations rapidly — the same trait that has allowed it to dominate degraded waters and to establish in places like Lago de Pátzcuaro after introduction. As with other livebearers, adults will opportunistically prey on fry, so dense littoral vegetation provides the cover that lets young survive in the wild.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis infans is seldom seen in the aquarium trade; it is a plain, olive-grey fish without the colour or finnage that drives demand for guppies, platies and swordtails, and it reaches hobbyists mainly through native-fish and livebearer specialists rather than ordinary shops. For those who do keep it, the species' defining quality is hardiness — this is a fish adapted to warm, shallow, vegetation-rich, often poor-quality water, and it is correspondingly forgiving of imperfect conditions.

A planted aquarium with ample floating and marginal vegetation, gentle flow and temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius would suit it, matching the standing and slow-flowing littoral habitats it occupies in the wild. As a small, peaceful, shoaling omnivore it is best kept in groups with a diet that includes algal and vegetable matter alongside small prepared and live foods. Its main interest is to keepers of Mexican goodeids and native poeciliids and to those maintaining captive populations of declining endemics — and here a word of caution applies: because the species is so adaptable and so fecund, it should never be released into local waters outside its native range, where it readily establishes and could compete with native fishes.

Conservation

Poeciliopsis infans is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 23 March 2018 (species ID 191761). This stands in deliberate contrast to many of the fish it shares its range with: the central Mexican plateau is the heartland of the goodeids and other endemic livebearers, a great number of which are threatened or endangered by habitat loss, water extraction, pollution and introduced species. P. infans, by virtue of its broad distribution and exceptional tolerance of degraded conditions, is one of the comparatively few native highland livebearers that is not at risk.

The traits that protect the species — wide range, high reproductive resilience, and the ability to thrive in eutrophic, polluted and physically altered waters — are precisely the traits that make hardy livebearers effective invaders elsewhere. P. infans has already been moved outside its natural drainage into systems such as Lago de Pátzcuaro, where introduced fishes are implicated in the decline of fragile native communities. For an aquarist the conservation message is therefore twofold: the Lerma livebearer itself needs no special protection, but its very robustness means it should be contained, never released beyond its home waters, where so many of its more vulnerable relatives are already under pressure.
