Poeciliopsis latidens is a small, unassuming live-bearing toothcarp of the Pacific lowlands of north-western Mexico, where it slips between fresh stream water and the brackish edge of estuaries and mangrove lagoons along the eastern Gulf of California. Described by Garman in 1895 and known in English as the lowland livebearer, it is a hardy, salt-tolerant member of the genus Poeciliopsis — a group celebrated among biologists for unusual reproductive tricks — that has rarely entered the aquarium hobby but is of growing conservation interest as its narrow coastal range comes under pressure from human development.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis latidens was first described by the American zoologist Samuel Garman in 1895, originally under the name Glaridodon latidens; it was later transferred to the genus Poeciliopsis, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poeciliopsis latidens (Garman, 1895) as the valid name. The parentheses around the authority record that move out of the original genus. The species sits within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and the subfamily Poeciliinae, in the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The genus name Poeciliopsis combines the Greek poikilos, "with many colours," with opsis, "appearance" — literally "resembling Poecilia," the guppy genus to which these fishes are allied. The specific epithet latidens derives from the Latin latus, "broad," and dens, "tooth," a reference to the dentition noted in the original description. The English common name "lowland livebearer" reflects its habit of the coastal lowlands, while in Spanish it is called the guatopote del Fuerte, after the Río del Fuerte at the heart of its range.

Poeciliopsis is a sizeable and biologically remarkable genus of small Middle American livebearers, several of whose members are famous for clonal and hybridogenetic all-female lineages. P. latidens is one of the more conventional, sexually reproducing species, and within the genus is distinguished as a wide-ranging coastal form of the eastern Gulf of California drainages.

Morphology

Poeciliopsis latidens is a small fish, reaching a maximum of about 2 in in total length in both sexes. Like other poeciliids it has a flattened dorsal profile and an upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, with the dorsal fin set well back on the body. Colouration is modest — a silvery to olive ground typical of estuarine livebearers, without the bright spotting of its guppy relatives — which fits a life spent in turbid, variable coastal waters.

As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ in the structure of the anal fin. In males the anterior anal-fin rays are modified into a gonopodium, a slender, mobile intromittent organ used to transfer sperm to the female; females retain a normal fan-shaped anal fin. Males also tend to be the smaller, more slender sex, while females are deeper-bodied, particularly when gravid, when a darkened patch may be visible at the rear of the abdomen.

Detailed published morphometrics for this species in the popular literature are sparse, and beyond the diagnostic broad-toothed dentition implied by its name and the standard poeciliid body plan, fine meristic detail is best taken from the primary descriptive literature rather than inferred.

Habitat

Poeciliopsis latidens is endemic to north-western Mexico, where it occupies the Pacific coastal lowlands along the eastern side of the Gulf of California. Its range runs from the Río del Fuerte south to San Blas in Nayarit, spanning the Mexican states of Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit and Durango. The IUCN reports an extent of occurrence under 20,0 mi² and an area of occupancy under 2,0 mi², marking it as a comparatively narrow-range, coastal endemic.

The species is strongly euryhaline — tolerant of a wide span of salinity. FishBase records it as living in fresh, brackish and even marine water, and notes that it occurs mainly in brackish and salt water, only occasionally in pure fresh water. Its habitats include freshwater streams, brackish coastal lagoons, estuaries, and mangrove systems, over soft substrates of mud, sand and gravel. It is a shallow-water fish, recorded from depths of roughly 0–7 ft, in a tropical climate with water temperatures around 75–86 °F and pH up to about 8.0.

This amphibious tolerance of salinity is characteristic of several Pacific-slope livebearers and lets the species exploit the dynamic interface between river mouths and the sea — a productive but ecologically demanding zone where conditions shift with tide, season and rainfall.

Feeding

In the wild, Poeciliopsis latidens is a small omnivore and micro-predator of the estuarine margin. The IUCN assessment records its diet as detritus, zooplankton and insects — a diet consistent with a surface-and-midwater livebearer foraging over soft substrates in lagoons and stream mouths. Detritus and drifting plankton supply a dependable base, supplemented by aquatic and terrestrial insects taken at or near the surface.

This opportunistic feeding strategy suits the variable, often turbid waters the species inhabits, where food availability changes with tide and season. As with related livebearers, the fish is likely a near-continuous grazer rather than a meal-by-meal predator, taking small items steadily through the day.

Specific captive feeding records for this species are sparse, as it is rarely kept; by analogy with other small estuarine poeciliids it would be expected to accept a varied diet of small flake, micro-pellets and small live or frozen foods, with some plant or algal matter, but this is an inference rather than a documented practice.

Mating

Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Poeciliopsis latidens reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium — the rod-like organ formed from the modified anterior rays of the anal fin — which is swung forward and inserted briefly during mating. There is no external spawning and no egg-laying: fertilisation and the early development of the young take place within the female.

Male poeciliids typically court and pursue females persistently rather than defending territories, and females of many species are able to store viable sperm internally for extended periods, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single insemination. While the fine details of courtship in P. latidens specifically are not well documented in the accessible literature, this general poeciliid pattern of male pursuit, gonopodial insemination and female sperm storage applies across the family.

The genus Poeciliopsis is of particular scientific interest in reproductive biology because several of its species form all-female hybridogenetic and gynogenetic lineages that depend on the sperm of sexual host species. P. latidens itself is a normal, sexually reproducing (bisexual) species; it is the sexual relatives within the genus that supply the contrast against which those unusual unisexual lineages are studied.

Breeding

Poeciliopsis latidens is viviparous, giving birth to free-swimming live young rather than laying eggs. FishBase records a gestation period of about 28 days, after which the female produces a brood of roughly 10 to 25 young. The newborn fry are fully formed miniatures, able to swim and feed immediately — the standard livebearer pattern that makes poeciliid young comparatively robust at birth.

With a roughly four-week gestation and the capacity for sperm storage typical of the family, females can produce broods in succession through the warm season. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, reflecting the rapid reproductive turnover that small livebearers achieve.

Whether Poeciliopsis latidens shows superfetation — the ability to carry several broods at different stages of development simultaneously, documented in some Poeciliopsis species — is not established in the readily available sources here, so it should not be assumed. As with many of its relatives, adults are likely to predate fry, meaning that in a managed setting cover or separation would be needed to raise good numbers; documented breeding accounts for this particular species, however, are sparse.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis latidens is essentially an enthusiast's and specialist's fish rather than a mainstream aquarium subject. It is rarely encountered in the trade, and most aquarium interest comes from livebearer specialists — for example through associations such as the American Livebearer Association — who maintain wild and near-wild Mexican poeciliids for conservation and study. There is no established body of fancy strains as there is for the guppy.

The most important husbandry note is the species' salinity tolerance. Because wild fish occur mainly in brackish and salt water and only occasionally in fresh, a hard, alkaline, slightly brackish setup is closer to its natural conditions than soft fresh water. It is a warm-water fish, suited to temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius and alkaline water up to around pH 8, over a soft substrate that mirrors the muddy, sandy lagoons it inhabits.

Beyond these points, specific captive-care detail is sparse, and a keeper should treat husbandry as analogous to other small euryhaline livebearers rather than as well-documented. Anyone keeping it is, in effect, helping maintain a coastal endemic whose wild populations are under pressure — which is much of the reason the species is kept at all.

Conservation

Poeciliopsis latidens is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1b(iii)+2b(iii). The most recent assessment was carried out on 3 December 2018 and published in 2019 (Valdes Gonzales & Vega-Cendejas); the species had also been listed as Near Threatened in the previous 2010 assessment. The listing rests on its restricted distribution — an extent of occurrence under 20,0 mi² and an area of occupancy under 2,0 mi² — combined with a continuing decline in the quality of its coastal habitat. The population trend is recorded as unknown, with no species-specific population data available.

The principal threats are habitat loss and degradation driven by human and coastal development, including the loss of mangroves on which its estuarine habitats depend. These pressures act on a narrow band of productive but vulnerable coastline along the eastern Gulf of California, where the fish's tolerance of brackish and marine conditions ties it to exactly the lagoon, estuary and mangrove systems most exposed to coastal change.

The species is not utilised commercially and is subject to no species-specific conservation measures. Broader recommendations for the region — sound water-resource management and the removal of introduced exotic fishes — would benefit it, but as things stand its persistence depends largely on the fate of the coastal wetlands it occupies. For aquarists, the relevant point is that this is a species of conservation concern best supported through responsible, knowledgeable maintenance of captive lines rather than wild collection.
