Taxonomy & naming
Poeciliopsis lutzi was described by the American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1902, on the basis of material from the Pacific drainages of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — treats the species as Poeciliopsis lutzi (Meek, 1902), the parentheses on the authority indicating that the species has since been moved from the genus in which Meek originally placed it into Poeciliopsis. It sits within the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, in the order Cyprinodontiformes, the egg-laying and live-bearing toothcarps.
The genus name Poeciliopsis combines the Greek poikilos, "with many colours," with opsis, "appearance" — literally a fish resembling Poecilia, the guppies and mollies. The specific epithet honours Frank Eugene Lutz (1879–1943), an American entomologist, making lutzi a patronym rather than a descriptive name. The common names in both English and Spanish — Oaxaca livebearer and guatopote oaxaqueño — point to the species' restricted range in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.
Poeciliopsis is a notable genus in evolutionary biology because several of its species in north-western Mexico form unisexual, all-female lineages that reproduce through hybridogenesis and gynogenesis. P. lutzi is not one of these: it is a normal gonochoristic, bisexual species with separate males and females. That distinction matters, because care and breeding notes drawn from the better-studied unisexual congeners do not transfer cleanly to this fish.
Morphology
Poeciliopsis lutzi is a small fish, recorded to a maximum of about 1.5 in in total length (the figure on FishBase derives from Lucinda's 2003 treatment of the Poeciliinae). Like other members of the genus it has the compact, slightly elongate body typical of small stream-dwelling livebearers, with a flattened dorsal profile, a terminal upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, and a single dorsal fin set well back on the body.
Detailed colour and meristic descriptions specific to P. lutzi are sparse in the accessible literature, and no photograph accompanies the species on FishBase, so its precise pigmentation pattern is not well documented here. At the genus level, Poeciliopsis are generally modestly coloured fishes — silvery to olive or tan flanks, sometimes with dark spotting or faint vertical bars — rather than the saturated ornament seen in fancy guppies.
As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ. Males are smaller and bear a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — while females are larger, deeper-bodied and lack this structure, often showing a darkened gravid region when carrying young. Beyond this general poeciliid dimorphism, strain- or population-specific traits for P. lutzi are not reliably recorded.
Habitat
Poeciliopsis lutzi is native to the Pacific slope of southern Mexico, in the freshwater drainages of Oaxaca — the range reflected directly in its common names. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of the warm lowland and foothill streams characteristic of that region, the kind of small, shifting watercourses in which most small Central American and Mexican livebearers are found.
The water parameters recorded for the species describe a warm, near-neutral to mildly alkaline, moderately soft-to-medium-hard environment: tropical temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F, pH around 7.0–7.7, and hardness in the region of 5–15 dH. These figures place the fish firmly in the comfortable middle of the range tolerated by most small Mexican poeciliids and suggest a fish adapted to stable warm streams rather than to extremes of chemistry.
Field documentation of P. lutzi is thin. The species has a taxon page on iNaturalist but, as of this writing, no research-grade observations, underscoring how range-restricted and poorly surveyed it is. Beyond the broad statement that it occupies Oaxacan Pacific-slope freshwaters, detailed microhabitat data — flow, substrate, vegetation, associated species — are not reliably available, and are better treated as data-sparse than guessed at.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Poeciliopsis lutzi is recorded on FishBase or in the accessible hobby literature, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its body plan and from the well-known habits of small stream-dwelling poeciliids rather than asserted from direct observation. Fishes of this size and form are characteristically opportunistic micro-omnivores.
In the wild, that typically means grazing on algae, biofilm and detritus from surfaces, together with small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and any drifting items taken from the surface film and water column. The upturned mouth of poeciliids reflects a tendency to feed at and near the surface, where falling terrestrial insects and emerging larvae are abundant in shallow streams.
In captivity — where the species is, in any case, very rarely kept — a fish of this type would be expected to accept the standard small-livebearer fare: good-quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm, with some vegetable or algal content. Frequent small feedings suit a small, near-constant grazer better than infrequent large meals. These husbandry notes are extrapolated from the genus, not from documented care of P. lutzi.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, Poeciliopsis lutzi reproduces by internal fertilisation. Males possess a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin, which is used to transfer sperm to the female; courtship and copulation in this group do not involve nest-building or egg deposition. Specific descriptions of P. lutzi courtship behaviour are not documented, so the account here is read at the level of the family and genus.
In poeciliids generally, males pursue females and attempt insemination, often combining display with surreptitious mating attempts, and females are able to store viable sperm internally for extended periods, allowing successive broods to follow a single mating. Whether P. lutzi shows pronounced female choice, male colour-based mate selection, or other behaviours seen in better-studied relatives such as the guppy is not specifically recorded.
The genus Poeciliopsis is famous for the unisexual, hybridogenetic and gynogenetic complexes of its north-western Mexican members, in which all-female lineages depend on sperm from males of related bisexual species. P. lutzi, however, is a conventional bisexual species with both sexes, and its reproduction follows the ordinary internal-fertilisation pattern of the family — it does not belong to those unisexual complexes.
Breeding
Poeciliopsis lutzi is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. This much follows from its placement in the Poeciliidae and from FishBase's genus-level characterisation of the reproductive mode. Nutrition of the embryos in poeciliids ranges from purely yolk-based (lecithotrophic) to maternally provisioned (matrotrophic, including placenta-like structures); matrotrophy varies across Poeciliopsis, and while some congeners are strongly matrotrophic, the specific provisioning strategy of P. lutzi is not documented and should not be assumed.
Quantitative breeding data for this species — gestation length, brood size, the interval between broods, and whether it shows superfetation (carrying several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously, a trait present in some Poeciliopsis) — are not reliably recorded. Rather than supply guessed figures, it is more honest to flag these as data-sparse. What can be said is that a fish of this size would be expected to produce modest broods of small fry, consistent with other small members of the genus.
The young, as in all livebearers, are born fully formed and capable of swimming and feeding immediately. In the rare event of captive breeding, the fry would need fine first foods and dense cover, since adult poeciliids — including the mother — commonly predate their own young. Because the species is so seldom kept, no established breeding protocol exists, and any captive-bred line would be building husbandry knowledge largely from scratch.
In the aquarium
Poeciliopsis lutzi is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. No dedicated American Livebearer Association profile, biotope writeup or reputable care guide for the species could be located, and the fish has no meaningful presence in the trade — it is a range-restricted, poorly documented species kept, if at all, only by specialist collectors. Care advice for it therefore has to be inferred cautiously from the genus and treated as provisional.
A fish of roughly 1.5 in from warm Oaxacan streams would, by analogy with similar small Mexican livebearers, suit a modest, well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration and stable, warm water — around 75–82 °F, neutral to slightly alkaline pH near 7.0–7.7, and soft-to-medium hardness of about 5–15 dH. As with most poeciliids, keeping more females than males would reduce the harassment that comes from the males' persistent mating attempts.
Because the species is so little kept, claims about its temperament, tankmate compatibility, hardiness in captivity and precise requirements cannot be made with confidence. The responsible approach is to present the parameters above as a starting point drawn from the genus and the recorded water data, and to be explicit that detailed, species-specific aquarium experience with P. lutzi is sparse to non-existent in the accessible record.
Conservation
Poeciliopsis lutzi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. A Data Deficient listing means there is not enough information on the species' distribution, population size or trends to evaluate its risk of extinction — it is not a statement that the fish is secure, but rather an acknowledgement of how little is known. The species is not listed under CITES or CMS.
This assessment is consistent with everything else about the fish: its absence of photographic documentation, its lack of research-grade field observations, and its restricted range on the Pacific slope of Oaxaca all point to a species that has simply not been studied or monitored closely enough to judge. Small, range-limited freshwater fishes of southern Mexico can be vulnerable to habitat loss, water extraction, pollution and the introduction of non-native species, but whether any of these pressures specifically threaten P. lutzi is, by the nature of a Data Deficient listing, unresolved.
For a fish this obscure, the most useful conservation note is the honest one: more field survey work is needed before its status can be properly evaluated. Until that exists, P. lutzi should be regarded as a poorly known endemic whose conservation needs remain undetermined rather than as either secure or imperilled.
