The largespot livebearer is a small, flank-spotted toothcarp of Mesoamerica's lowland waters — one of the widespread, easily overlooked Poeciliopsis that thread the streams and lakes of the Pacific and Atlantic slopes from southern Mexico down through Guatemala. Described by Albert Günther in 1866 from a Guatemalan lake that no longer exists, Poeciliopsis pleurospilus is a hardy, internally fertilising livebearer of no commercial fame and modest colour, but it sits at the centre of a taxonomically thorny species complex that modern genomic work has only recently begun to untangle.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis pleurospilus was described by the German-British zoologist Albert Günther in 1866, the original combination being placed in another genus and later moved to Poeciliopsis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes therefore renders the authority in parentheses as (Günther, 1866). The type locality is Lago Dueñas (Lake Dueñas) on the Pacific slope of Guatemala — a body of water that no longer exists, so the original collecting site survives only as a historical reference. The species belongs to the family Poeciliidae and the subfamily Poeciliinae, the New World livebearers, and is catalogued by FishBase under SpecCode 62528.

The genus name Poeciliopsis combines the Greek poikilos, "with many colours," and opsis, "appearance" — literally "resembling Poecilia," the guppy-and-molly genus whose general form these fishes echo. The species epithet pleurospilus is built from the Greek pleura, "side" or "flank," and spilos, "spot," a direct reference to the lateral spotting that also gives the fish its English name, largespot livebearer (in Spanish, guatopote manchote).

Nomenclaturally the species is awkward because it is one member of a widespread complex of small, spotted Middle American Poeciliopsis whose boundaries have long been unclear. Recent genomic work — for example Beans and colleagues (2022), who used genome-scale data to test the validity of several Middle American Poeciliopsis — has worked to confirm which forms represent distinct species and which are populations of a wider-ranging taxon. P. pleurospilus is treated as a valid species within that radiation, but the reader should expect its exact circumscription to remain an active research question.

Morphology

Poeciliopsis pleurospilus is a small, slender livebearer. FishBase gives a maximum recorded length of about 2 in SL; in practice most individuals are smaller, and the species shows the strong sexual size dimorphism typical of poeciliids. Comparative material reported by Bussing (2008) from Lago de Amatitlán on Guatemala's Pacific slope measured a male at 1 in SL against a female of 1.5 in SL — females noticeably larger than males, a pattern repeated throughout the family.

The common name points to the species' most reliable field mark: a series of dark spots scattered along the flank, the "largespot" pattern from which both the English name and the epithet pleurospilus derive. The overall body plan is the unremarkable, streamlined toothcarp shape — a terminal, upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, a single soft dorsal fin set well back, and a rounded caudal. Bayesian length–weight figures compiled by FishBase (a = 0.01175, b = 3.10 in cm TL) describe a fish of average, near-isometric body proportions rather than an unusually deep or elongate one.

The defining structural difference between the sexes is the gonopodium of the male — the slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin that all poeciliid males use to fertilise females internally. Females lack this modification, retaining a fan-shaped anal fin, and are deeper-bodied, especially when carrying young. Beyond that, detailed colour and meristic description for this particular species in the hobbyist and popular literature is sparse, and finer distinctions within the complex rest on counts and genetics rather than obvious external traits.

Habitat

The largespot livebearer is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical Mesoamerica. It occurs on both versants — the Pacific slope and the Atlantic/Caribbean slope — across a broad band of Middle America, with records concentrated in Guatemala and extending through the wider region of southern Mexico southward toward Nicaragua, the geographic span of the spotted-Poeciliopsis complex to which it belongs. FishBase's summary page lists the distribution only at the coarse level of "North America," but the underlying territory records and the primary literature place the species firmly in Mesoamerican lowland drainages.

Within that range it is a fish of warm lowland streams and lakes. The historical type locality was a Pacific-slope Guatemalan lake (Lago Dueñas), and documented comparative material comes from Lago de Amatitlán, also on the Guatemalan Pacific slope — confirming the species' association with standing-water lake habitats as well as flowing streams. As a small, surface-oriented poeciliid it favours shallow, vegetated and marginal waters where small invertebrates and algae are abundant.

FishBase classes the species as having high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, and low fishing vulnerability — both consistent with a small, fast-reproducing fish that tolerates a range of conditions across a wide geographic and altitudinal span. Precise water-chemistry envelopes specific to this species are not well documented in the sources at hand, so the values given here should be read as the broad tropical-lowland tolerances typical of Mesoamerican poeciliids rather than measured optima for P. pleurospilus.

Feeding

Specific dietary studies of Poeciliopsis pleurospilus are not available in the consulted sources, so its feeding ecology is best inferred from its body plan and from the well-known habits of small Mesoamerican poeciliids. Like its relatives, the largespot livebearer is an opportunistic omnivore and micro-predator: its small, upturned mouth and surface-and-midwater habit suit it to taking algae and detritus, diatoms, small aquatic invertebrates, and insect larvae — including, as with many small livebearers, mosquito larvae taken at the surface.

The balance of plant to animal matter in any given population most likely tracks what is locally available, shifting between the lake and stream habitats the species occupies. Continuous grazing on small items, rather than pursuit of large prey, fits both its size and the high reproductive output FishBase attributes to it.

In an aquarium setting a fish of this type would accept the standard fare offered to small livebearers — quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and microworm, plus some algal or vegetable matter. Because firm published diet data for this species is thin, these husbandry notes are extrapolated from the family rather than measured for P. pleurospilus specifically.

Mating

Reproduction in Poeciliopsis pleurospilus is internal and viviparous, the defining reproductive mode of the family Poeciliidae. Fertilisation occurs inside the female: the male uses his gonopodium — the rod-like organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — to transfer sperm, and the female then carries and nourishes the developing embryos before giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. As in poeciliids generally, females are able to store viable sperm internally, so a single mating can give rise to more than one successive brood.

The strong sexual size dimorphism documented for the species — females markedly larger than males — is the usual poeciliid arrangement and is bound up with this mating system: small, mobile males pursue and attempt to inseminate the larger females. Detailed behavioural observations of courtship specific to P. pleurospilus are not recorded in the consulted sources, but the genus Poeciliopsis is well known in reproductive biology for the range of mating systems it contains, including unisexual, sperm-dependent lineages in some species; P. pleurospilus itself is a normal bisexual livebearer.

Because the popular and primary literature on this particular species says little about display, mate choice or copulation rate, the safe statement is the general one: this is a small, internally fertilising poeciliid in which the gonopodium-bearing male inseminates a larger female that carries the young to live birth. Finer detail is data-sparse.

Breeding

As a viviparous livebearer, Poeciliopsis pleurospilus gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than scattering eggs. The female carries the brood internally after fertilisation and delivers young that can swim and feed almost immediately — the same easy, prolific live-bearing strategy that characterises the family. FishBase does not publish brood-size or gestation figures for this species, so specific clutch counts cannot be stated without guessing; the broad poeciliid pattern is gestation on the order of a few weeks, with brood size scaling with female size and condition.

The species' high resilience rating and short population doubling time (under fifteen months) imply a fish that breeds readily and recovers quickly — consistent with the continuous, multi-brood reproduction seen across small livebearers, where stored sperm allows a female to produce several broods from one mating. Whether P. pleurospilus exhibits superfetation — the carrying of two or more broods at different developmental stages simultaneously, a phenomenon documented in several Poeciliopsis species — is not confirmed in the sources consulted here, so it is noted only as a known genus-level trait that may or may not apply to this species.

In captivity, breeding small poeciliids of this kind is generally straightforward given warm, stable water and cover for the fry, since adults will eat newborn young in the open. Detailed captive-breeding accounts for the largespot livebearer specifically are sparse, reflecting its near-total absence from the ornamental trade.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis pleurospilus is essentially a fish of scientific and faunistic interest rather than an aquarium-trade species; it has little ornamental colour and is rarely if ever offered commercially, so dedicated husbandry literature is scarce. What can be said is extrapolated from the requirements of small Mesoamerican livebearers generally: a modest, well-planted aquarium with stable, warm tropical water and clean conditions would suit a small group.

FishBase rates the species as harmless to humans and as a hardy, high-resilience fish, which suggests it would be undemanding to keep for anyone who obtained it — most likely through a livebearer-specialist or biotope-minded keeper rather than a general shop. As with other small livebearers, keeping it in groups, providing dense planting or floating cover for the fry, and skewing the sex ratio toward females to spread out male attention would be sensible defaults.

Because concrete, species-specific aquarium data is genuinely thin, this section is offered as cautious general guidance rather than a tested care profile. The honest summary is that P. pleurospilus is a hardy, peaceful, easily bred little livebearer that almost no one keeps — interesting chiefly for its place in the Poeciliopsis radiation rather than for the tank.

Conservation

Poeciliopsis pleurospilus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (species ID 191764; assessment 191764/2002504), with the assessment dated 23 March 2018. The rating reflects a wide-ranging, abundant Mesoamerican poeciliid rather than a narrowly distributed or threatened fish — importantly, this is not one of the imperilled Goodeidae or restricted-range livebearers of the region, but a broadly distributed, resilient species of Least Concern. It is not listed under CITES (Not Evaluated) and is rated as having low fishing vulnerability.

The one note of historical caution embedded in the species' record is the loss of its type locality: Lago Dueñas, the Guatemalan lake from which Günther's 1866 type material came, no longer exists. That a described locality can simply vanish is a reminder that even a Least Concern species lives in landscapes subject to hydrological change, drainage and habitat alteration — pressures that bear on Mesoamerican freshwater fishes broadly even where a particular species remains secure overall.

Given its breadth of distribution and high resilience, the largespot livebearer faces no significant species-level threat at present. As with any livebearer, the appropriate aquarist stance is simply never to release captive fish into local waters; but for this widespread native of Middle America the conservation story is one of stability rather than concern.
