Taxonomy & naming
Poeciliopsis santaelena was described by the Costa Rican-based ichthyologist William A. Bussing in 2008, in the Revista de Biología Tropical (56(2):829–838). The holotype, a mature male of 1 in standard length, was collected from an isolated pool in the Río Potrero Grande about 5 mi upstream of the river mouth, in the Sector Santa Elena of the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, at roughly 328 ft elevation, on 22 February 2006. The paratype series spans 0.5–2 in SL. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Poeciliopsis santaelena Bussing, 2008 as the valid name, placing it in the genus Poeciliopsis within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers.
Bussing assigned the species to the subgenus Poeciliopsis and identified it as a member of the Poeciliopsis gracilis species complex, most closely related to — and apparently derived from — Poeciliopsis pleurospilus. That complex ranges along both versants from southern Mexico to Nicaragua, and santaelena marks its southern terminus on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica. The species is distinguished from its relatives chiefly by the complete absence of lateral and ventral black spots, by higher pectoral- and caudal-fin ray counts, and by a more posteriorly placed dorsal fin.
The genus name Poeciliopsis combines the Greek poikilos, "many-coloured," with opsis, "appearance." The specific epithet santaelena refers to the Península Santa Elena, which contains the Río Potrero Grande — the only locality from which the species is known.
Morphology
Poeciliopsis santaelena is a small, slender toothcarp. Females are the larger sex, reaching roughly 1.5–2 in standard length, while males are considerably smaller at about 0.5–1 in; FishBase lists a maximum of 2 in SL. The body is grey above and paler below, with each scale narrowly dark-bordered, producing a conspicuous cross-hatched appearance over the flanks. A slender black subdermal median line runs from the level of the anal fin to the base of the caudal fin. The fins are dusky or clear, and — diagnostically — there are no spots, bars, or other dark markings on the head or body.
Meristic counts recorded by Bussing and summarised in FishBase include 7 dorsal soft rays, 9 anal soft rays, 29 to 30 vertebrae, 14 to 17 gill rakers (mode 15), 14 to 16 pectoral rays (mode 15), and 15 to 17 caudal rays (mode 16). The mouth is small, its width less than the eye diameter, and the dentition is biserial, with the outer row of teeth slender, pointed, curved, and loosely implanted. In females the dorsal-fin origin lies over the sixth to seventh anal-fin ray, reflecting the posteriorly placed dorsal fin that helps separate this species from its relatives.
As in all poeciliids, the most distinctive male feature is the gonopodium — the anal fin modified into an intromittent organ. In P. santaelena the gonopodium is asymmetrical (sinistral), formed from anal rays 3, 4 and 5, and bears a membranous hook at its tip, the structural confirmation that this is an internally fertilising livebearer.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Río Potrero Grande, a small Pacific-slope stream draining the Península Santa Elena in the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, north-western Costa Rica. The peninsula is the driest place in the country; geologically it originated as an isolated oceanic island and carries serpentine soils, giving it an unusual, harsh setting. The Río Potrero Grande rises at around 1148 ft above sea level and behaves as a strongly seasonal watercourse — a raging torrent during heavy rains, but by the end of April reduced to almost no surface flow, persisting only as isolated seepage-fed pools. The stream disappears underground roughly 4 mi from the sea.
In the dry season the fish are confined to these residual pools, which are some 98–164 ft long and up to about 23.5 in deep, over a rocky substrate coated with aufwuchs and mats of Cladophora algae in clear water. The watercourse flows fully only during heavy rains, so the population endures repeated cycles of fragmentation and reconnection. This dependence on a single intermittent stream is the central fact of the species' ecology and the basis for its conservation concern.
P. santaelena shares these pools with a characteristic Pacific-slope fauna, co-occurring with the bigmouth sleeper Gobiomorus maculatus, the goby Sicydium salvini, the mountain mullet Agonostomus monticola, and the spotted sleeper Eleotris picta. The freshwater shrimps Macrobrachium americanum and Atya innocua are also present in the same reaches.
Feeding
Direct dietary data are sparse. Examination of gut contents in the original description found chiefly flocculant organic detritus, indicating that Poeciliopsis santaelena feeds largely as a detritivore and grazer on the aufwuchs — the film of algae, diatoms, microorganisms and trapped detritus — that coats the rocky substrate of its pools. The slender, pointed, loosely implanted outer teeth and small mouth are consistent with a fish that scrapes and picks at this surface layer rather than one that takes large prey.
Given the dense Cladophora algal mats that line the dry-season pools, algal and detrital material is the most reliable food source available through much of the year. Like most poeciliids the species is best understood as an opportunistic micro-omnivore, almost certainly supplementing this base with small invertebrates and insect larvae when the stream is flowing and such items are abundant, though the published record does not detail the animal component of its diet.
No information on captive feeding exists, as the species is not known in the aquarium hobby; husbandry would have to be inferred from related Poeciliopsis.
Mating
Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Poeciliopsis santaelena reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays 3, 4 and 5. In this species the gonopodium is asymmetrical and turned to the left (sinistral) and ends in a membranous hook — features that anchor copulation and confirm the live-bearing reproductive mode of the species.
No courtship behaviour has been described specifically for P. santaelena. In Poeciliopsis generally, males are smaller than females and pursue them more or less continuously, combining brief display with sneak insemination attempts in the manner typical of small poeciliids; the marked size difference between the sexes in this species — females roughly twice the length of males — fits that pattern. Detailed observations of mate choice and male tactics in this particular fish have not been published.
The subgenus Poeciliopsis is not among the unisexual, hybridogenetic forms found elsewhere in the genus, so reproduction here is ordinary bisexual mating between males and females rather than any of the all-female reproductive systems for which Poeciliopsis is otherwise famous.
Breeding
Poeciliopsis santaelena is viviparous, giving birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Within the subgenus Poeciliopsis, development is lecithotrophic (ovoviviparous) — the embryos are nourished by yolk rather than through a maternal placenta, distinguishing this lineage from the placental, matrotrophic Poeciliopsis species that occur elsewhere in the genus. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing brood internally through gestation and then releases the fry as miniature, independent fish.
Species-specific reproductive data — brood size, gestation length, and timing — were not reported in the original description and are not otherwise documented, so these figures should be regarded as data sparse. By analogy with small poeciliids of comparable size, broods are likely to be modest in number, and the live-bearing strategy is well suited to an intermittent stream where producing self-sufficient fry rather than vulnerable eggs is an advantage in shrinking dry-season pools. Superfetation — the carrying of overlapping broods at different developmental stages — occurs in some Poeciliopsis but has not been confirmed for P. santaelena and should not be assumed.
FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, estimating a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, which implies the population can rebound relatively quickly once flow returns and habitat reconnects after the dry season.
In the aquarium
Poeciliopsis santaelena is not a fish of the aquarium hobby. It is a recently described, narrowly endemic species of no commercial or fisheries interest, is harmless to people, and is not known to be kept or bred in captivity. There is accordingly no established body of husbandry experience for it, and any keeping recommendations would be inferred from related Poeciliopsis rather than drawn from the species itself.
Were it ever maintained — for instance in a conservation or research context — its wild ecology suggests warm, clear water over a rocky, algae-covered substrate, with the strong seasonality of its native stream a reminder that the species is adapted to fluctuating, sometimes harsh conditions. Its detritus- and aufwuchs-based diet would point to a tank with established algal growth and a varied micro-omnivore feeding regime.
Given the species' extreme range restriction and conservation status, the responsible position is that wild collection for the hobby is inappropriate; this is a fish to read about and protect in place rather than to seek out for the home aquarium.
Conservation
Poeciliopsis santaelena is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, under criterion D2, in an assessment dated 6 February 2020 (assessment 170647203, species 168627060). Criterion D2 applies to species with a very restricted area of occupancy or number of locations — here, effectively a single stream — such that a plausible future threat could drive the species to Critically Endangered or Extinct in a very short time. The species is not evaluated under CITES.
The basis for the listing is the species' confinement to one short, intermittent watercourse, the Río Potrero Grande, on the Península Santa Elena. Bussing described it as a relict population restricted to a single stream and explicitly argued that it merits listing among the threatened and endangered species of the Área de Conservación Guanacaste. Because the entire known population occupies one drainage that dwindles to a few isolated pools each dry season, any disturbance to that single system — altered hydrology, drought, pollution, or the introduction of non-native fishes — could affect the whole species at once.
The species' one protective advantage is that its sole locality lies within the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, a protected area, which shields the habitat from direct development. Continued conservation rests on maintaining the integrity and natural flow regime of the Río Potrero Grande and on keeping non-native species out of this isolated Pacific-slope catchment.
