Poeciliopsis turneri is a small, little-known live-bearing toothcarp endemic to a narrow band of Pacific-slope streams in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where it lives in shaded, slow lowland creeks among fallen wood and dense cover. Described by Robert Rush Miller in 1975 and named for the embryologist Clarence Lester Turner, it is a typical member of the New World genus Poeciliopsis — internally fertilising, viviparous, and unobtrusive. It is rarely seen in the aquarium hobby and remains poorly studied, and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient for want of basic information on its population and the threats it faces.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis turneri was described by the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller in 1975. It belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers that include the guppies, mollies, mosquitofishes and their relatives. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poeciliopsis turneri Miller, 1975 as the valid name; FishBase records the species under speccode 47292.

The genus Poeciliopsis is a large and biologically remarkable assemblage of small Central American and Mexican livebearers, several of which are famous in evolutionary biology for unisexual (all-female, sperm-dependent) reproductive complexes. Poeciliopsis turneri is a conventional, bisexual member of the genus rather than one of those hybridogenetic lineages. The genus name combines the Greek poikilos, "with many colours," and opsis, "appearance." The specific epithet honours Clarence Lester Turner (1890–1969), an American ichthyologist who studied the embryology and reproduction — the viviparity — of livebearing fishes, a fitting dedication for a member of this internally fertilising family.

Morphology

Poeciliopsis turneri is a small fish, in keeping with its genus. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1 in total length for males, with females reaching roughly 1.5 in (after Wischnath's 1993 Atlas of Livebearers); the IUCN assessment cites a maximum reported length of about 2 in. As in all poeciliids, the species is sexually dimorphic: males are smaller and bear a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female — while females are larger and deeper-bodied.

Detailed published colour and meristic descriptions of this species are sparse outside the original taxonomic literature, so the atlas keeps to what is documented. The English common name "blackspotted livebearer" points to dark spotting or markings on the body, the most obvious external feature noted in the hobby literature. Beyond that, the fish presents the unremarkable, streamlined body plan typical of small stream-dwelling Poeciliopsis. Data on this species are genuinely sparse, and the atlas declines to fill the gaps with invented detail.

Habitat

Poeciliopsis turneri is endemic to Mexico, restricted to the Pacific slope of Jalisco in the Río Purificación and Río Marabasco (Cihuatlán) basins, southwest of Autlán. Its extent of occurrence is small — estimated at roughly 3,84 mi² — and it is reported to be abundant or common in the downstream reaches of these basins and in small-to-medium lowland streams. FishBase frames the range as running from the Río Purificación basin to the Río Resolana and northeastern Cihuatlán.

The species inhabits small, generally well-shaded and usually clear streams, living in and near pools provided with fallen tree trunks and similar protective cover. Currents range from slight to moderate, and the substrates are mixed — sand, silt, mud, rock, leaves and brush. Recorded depths are shallow, roughly 2–4 ft. Reported water parameters are warm and near-neutral to mildly alkaline: about 75–82 °F, pH 7.2–7.6, and hardness around 5–15 dH. This is a benthopelagic, tropical freshwater fish of permanent rivers, streams and creeks and associated inland wetlands.

Feeding

Specific diet studies for Poeciliopsis turneri are not readily available, and the atlas does not invent them. Like other small stream-dwelling Poeciliopsis, it is best understood as an opportunistic omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, algae and detritus from among the cover and pool margins it favours. Its shaded, wood-strewn lowland habitat would supply a steady mix of drifting and benthic invertebrate prey alongside algal and plant material.

In captivity — where this species is only rarely kept — a poeciliid of this size would be expected to accept the usual small foods: good-quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen items such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped bloodworm, plus some vegetable or algal matter. As with other small livebearers, frequent small feedings suit the fish better than a single large meal.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Poeciliopsis turneri reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male carries a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ built from modified anal-fin rays — which he uses to transfer sperm directly to the female; there is no external spawning of eggs. A study of the species on the freshwater-fishes-of-Mexico resource characterises its mating system as polygynandrous, meaning both sexes mate with multiple partners, a pattern common among small stream livebearers in which males pursue females and females may store and use sperm from more than one male.

Direct observations of courtship in this particular species are limited, and the atlas keeps to what the sources support rather than transposing the well-known display behaviour of better-studied relatives such as the guppy. What can be said is that the reproductive machinery is the standard poeciliid arrangement — gonopodial insemination, internal fertilisation, and the potential for sperm storage that lets a female produce successive broods. The biology of brood production is covered in the next section.

Breeding

Poeciliopsis turneri is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. The documented brood size for this species is strikingly small — the maximum known brood is just four young. Notably, young appear at short intervals of two weeks or less, which suggests frequent, successive broods rather than the single large litters seen in some larger livebearers. Reproduction is thought to occur chiefly from February to April (Miller, 2005).

The pattern of small broods produced at short intervals is consistent with superfetation, the ability of some poeciliids to carry several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously and release them in quick succession; this trait is known across the genus Poeciliopsis, though the atlas notes that it is inferred here from the reported short inter-brood interval rather than confirmed for this species in the cached sources. The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed at once, and as in other livebearers would require cover to survive predation, including by adults. Beyond these points the species' breeding biology is poorly documented.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis turneri is seldom encountered in the aquarium trade and is essentially a specialist's fish, of interest mainly to livebearer enthusiasts and biotope hobbyists rather than the general market. FishBase notes no photograph is available for the species (only a drawing placeholder), a reflection of how rarely it is kept and documented. Anyone maintaining it would be working largely from first principles and from the husbandry of related small Poeciliopsis.

Reported wild parameters give a reasonable target for captive care: warm water around 75–82 °F, pH roughly 7.2–7.6, and moderate hardness near 5–15 dH, in a well-planted, gently flowing setup with plenty of cover in the form of wood and leaf litter that echoes its shaded stream habitat. As a small, presumably peaceable livebearer it would suit a quiet species or biotope aquarium; given the very small documented brood sizes, this is not a fish that overwhelms a tank with fry as a guppy does. Because reliable husbandry information is thin, the atlas flags this as data-sparse and recommends careful observation over assumption.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Poeciliopsis turneri as Data Deficient (DD), under criteria version 3.1; the assessment was carried out on 6 December 2018 and published in 2019 (assessment id e.T169394A1276341, assessors Snoeks, Lalèyè, Contreras MacBeath & Lyons), and the species was likewise listed DD in the previous 2009 assessment. The population trend is recorded as unknown. The Data Deficient listing reflects genuine uncertainty about the species' population status and the threats acting on it, rather than evidence of either security or decline.

The fish is a narrow-range Mexican endemic, confined to the Río Purificación and Marabasco basins of Jalisco with an extent of occurrence of only about 3,84 mi² — a small distribution that warrants attention even in the absence of a documented decline. Threats are largely unknown; the assessment notes possible pollution from sugar mills operating within the range, while observing that the species is not threatened by fishing given its very small size, and that there is no evidence of a major population decline. No conservation measures are currently in place. For a poorly known, restricted-range livebearer like this, the most useful contribution is better field data on where it persists and in what numbers.
