Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana is a tiny, little-known livebearer from the rainforest streams of south-western Colombia, described in 1987 from the Pacific slope of Narino Province. Reaching only about two centimetres, it is one of the smaller New World poeciliids and is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby — known to science mainly from its original description, museum material and faunal records rather than from any sustained study of its life in the wild or in captivity. It belongs to a small genus of "false Poecilia" confined to the humid Pacific drainages of Colombia and Ecuador, and remains a data-deficient fish whose biology must be read largely from that of its better-known relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana was described by the Austrian aquarist and naturalist Alfred C. Radda in 1987, from material collected on the Pacific slope of south-western Colombia. The holotype (NMW 85922:1) is held in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, the Natural History Museum in Vienna, reflecting the strong Austrian tradition of describing small Neotropical and Old World killifishes and livebearers. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid: Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana Radda, 1987, placed in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae.

The genus Pseudopoecilia — the "false Poecilia" — is a small group of livebearing toothcarps restricted to the humid Pacific drainages of north-western South America, including P. festae, P. fria and P. austrocolumbiana. The genus name combines Greek pseudes, "false," with poikilos, "of many colours," the same root that gives Poecilia its name; the implication is of a fish superficially resembling a Poecilia but distinct from it. The specific epithet austrocolumbiana means "of southern Colombia," marking the type region in Narino Province on the country's Pacific Choco slope.

As with many small poeciliids described from a single locality, the species has attracted little subsequent taxonomic attention, and the modern boundaries of the genus rest largely on the original descriptions and a handful of regional faunal treatments. The valid name and authority here follow the Catalog of Fishes, which is the authority this atlas uses for nomenclature.

Morphology

Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana is a very small livebearer. Published length data give a maximum of about 1 in total length, placing it among the smallest of the New World poeciliids — comparable in size to the tiniest mosquitofishes and to Endler-grade guppies rather than to the larger mollies and swordtails. The body is the slender, slightly elongate shape typical of small stream-dwelling poeciliines, built for life among leaf litter and marginal vegetation in flowing water.

Detailed colour and meristic descriptions for this species are sparse outside the original 1987 account, and reliable photographs of living wild fish are scarce. As in other members of the genus and the subfamily, the sexes are expected to differ: males are the smaller sex and bear a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — while females are somewhat larger and deeper-bodied. Beyond these general poeciliine features, fine-scale morphology for P. austrocolumbiana is best treated as data sparse, and any specific claim about its fin counts, markings or proportions should be traced back to Radda's original description rather than inferred.

The genus as a whole is modestly coloured by livebearer standards, lacking the saturated ornamentation that has made guppies and Endlers popular; this, together with its rarity in collections, is part of why the species has remained obscure.

Habitat

The type locality is a rainforest stream roughly 16 mi from western El Diviso, on the road from Tuquerres toward Tumaco, in Narino Province of south-western Colombia. This is the Pacific slope of the Andes, within the Choco rainforest region — one of the wettest places on earth, where small, clear, warm forest streams drain steep, densely vegetated terrain toward the Pacific coast. The Catalog of Fishes and faunal records place the species in freshwater habitats of southern Colombia, and the genus more broadly is tied to these humid Pacific drainages of Colombia and Ecuador.

FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish. In practice that points to a small fish of warm, soft, shaded rainforest streams, the kind of habitat where small poeciliids occupy the margins, backwaters and slower channels among leaf litter and overhanging vegetation. Precise field measurements of temperature, pH and hardness specific to this species have not been published, so the water values given here are read conservatively from the warm, soft-water character of Choco rainforest streams rather than from direct readings for P. austrocolumbiana.

The species appears to be a narrow-range endemic of this Pacific-slope region, which is part of why so little is known about its ecology: the area is biologically rich but historically under-sampled for small fishes.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana has been published, and FishBase records only an estimated trophic level of about 3.0 — a figure consistent with a small omnivore that takes a mix of animal and plant material. Its feeding ecology must therefore be inferred from the general biology of small stream-dwelling poeciliines rather than from direct observation.

Fishes of this size and habitat typically graze on aufwuchs — the film of algae, diatoms, detritus and micro-organisms coating submerged surfaces — and take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and tiny drifting items from the water column and surface. In a shaded rainforest stream, allochthonous input such as terrestrial insects falling from the canopy and fine organic detritus would supplement whatever in-stream invertebrate and algal production is available. This opportunistic, micro-predatory omnivory is the rule across the small poeciliids.

Because the species is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby, there are no documented feeding observations from captivity. Any husbandry guidance would, by analogy with related small livebearers, centre on small, frequent feedings of fine foods and a share of algal or vegetable matter — but for this species specifically, captive diet is data sparse.

Mating

Like all poeciliines, Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — the defining reproductive structure of the live-bearing toothcarps. There is no external spawning, no nest and no egg-laying phase; courtship and copulation are the whole of the mating event.

In the better-studied members of the subfamily, males pursue females and combine brief courtship displays with attempts at direct insemination, and females are often able to store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single mating. Whether P. austrocolumbiana shows the pronounced female mate choice and male display behaviour documented in guppies, or the more coercive mating typical of some small poeciliids, has not been studied. No data on its specific courtship, sperm storage or any occurrence of superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, which appears in some poeciliid lineages — have been recorded for this species.

Accordingly, the account here is given as the general poeciliine pattern, explicitly applied to a species whose own mating biology remains undescribed.

Breeding

Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. This is the universal reproductive mode of the subfamily Poeciliinae, and it is the safest single statement that can be made about the species' reproduction.

Beyond that, the specifics are unrecorded. No gestation period, brood size, fry size or reproductive seasonality has been published for P. austrocolumbiana, and FishBase notes no placental or superfetation data for it. In related small poeciliids, gestation commonly runs a few weeks and broods range from a handful to a few dozen fry, scaling with the size and condition of the female; given this species' very small adult size — around 1 in — broods would be expected to be small. These expectations are offered only as the genus-level analogy they are, not as measured values for this fish.

There is no documented captive breeding of the species. Its high estimated resilience on FishBase, with a population doubling time of under fifteen months, reflects the general fecundity of small livebearers rather than any observed breeding programme. For this species in particular, the breeding biology is genuinely data sparse.

In the aquarium

For practical purposes, Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana is not an aquarium fish. No species-specific husbandry, captive maintenance or breeding records could be located: the genus Pseudopoecilia is rarely kept, and this species is essentially absent from the hobby and from the specialist livebearer organisations. There is therefore no established care protocol to report, and this section is included for completeness rather than to imply availability.

If wild stock ever did reach dedicated keepers, the sensible starting point — by analogy with other small Pacific-slope and rainforest-stream poeciliids — would be a small, well-planted, gently filtered aquarium with warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, fine foods offered little and often, and the heavy cover that small livebearer fry need to survive in the presence of adults. Tankmates would have to be very small and peaceful, since a 1 in fish is easily outcompeted or harassed.

The honest summary is that husbandry parameters for this species are unknown and any care advice is extrapolation. Because the data are this sparse, this atlas declines to assign a confident care rating, and the values shown in the fact panel for water chemistry are conservative inferences from its rainforest-stream habitat, not measured aquarium figures.

Conservation

Pseudopoecilia austrocolumbiana is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 10 October 2014. The Data Deficient category does not mean the species is secure; it means there is too little information on its distribution, population size and trends to judge its risk of extinction. For a narrow-range endemic known mainly from its type locality, this is an honest reflection of how little has been recorded since the species was described.

The species' apparent restriction to the Pacific Choco slope of Narino Province is relevant to any future assessment. The Choco is a region of exceptional biodiversity but also of ongoing pressures — deforestation, agricultural expansion and stream alteration — that can affect small, localised stream fishes disproportionately. Whether these pressures threaten P. austrocolumbiana specifically is unknown, precisely because the population and trend data needed to say so do not exist.

The useful conservation message is the one the Data Deficient listing itself implies: this is a poorly known fish from a globally important but under-studied rainforest region, and it would benefit from targeted survey work to establish where it occurs, how abundant it is, and whether its habitat is secure.
