Taxonomy & naming
Pseudopoecilia festae was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, from material collected at the Río Chico Chaune in Ecuador. The original combination placed the species in a different genus, so the authority is written in parentheses — (Boulenger, 1898) — reflecting its later transfer to Pseudopoecilia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and treats Pseudopoecilia festae within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, in the subfamily Poeciliinae.
The genus Pseudopoecilia is a small group of livebearers restricted to the Pacific-slope drainages of western Ecuador and adjacent Peru. In overall form its members closely resemble the common guppies — small grey fishes with the live-bearing reproductive apparatus characteristic of the family — and the two are easily confused at a glance. Within the genus, P. festae is distinguished from its congener P. fria by a higher lateral-line scale count, 33 to 35 versus 29 to 30 in P. fria (Glodek 1978). The data on this species are sparse: much of what is recorded comes from a handful of survey and revisionary works rather than from sustained study, and the species has accumulated little of the synonymy or popular literature that surrounds the guppy.
Morphology
Pseudopoecilia festae is a small fish. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 1.5 in for males and unsexed specimens and roughly 2 in for females, following Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers of the World — placing it firmly among the smaller poeciliids and very much in the size class of a wild guppy.
In body form the species resembles a common guppy: a slender, laterally compressed, grey little livebearer. Females are larger and plainer than males and may show thin dark vertical bars along the flanks. The diagnostic scale character separating P. festae from its congener is the lateral-line count of 33 to 35 scales (Glodek 1978). As in all poeciliids, the male carries a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — which is the most reliable external mark of sex. Detailed colour and meristic description beyond these points is sparse in the accessible literature, and the species lacks the bright, individually variable male patterning that makes its guppy relatives so conspicuous.
Habitat
Pseudopoecilia festae is native to the Pacific-slope freshwaters of western Ecuador, with its range extending from the Río Chico Chaune southward toward Peru. Western-Ecuadorian Pseudopoecilia occur in the Guayas and Esmeraldas river systems, the two principal drainages of the region. FishBase characterises the species as inhabiting small to large bodies of flowing water as well as springs, brooks and ponds, with a marked preference for densely vegetated water.
The recorded water parameters describe a warm, hard, alkaline environment. FishBase gives a temperature range of about 68–90 °F, a pH of 7.5 to 8.2, and a hardness of 15 to 35 dH — conditions typical of the lowland streams and springs of the Pacific coastal plain. The species is described as pelagic in freshwater, living in the open water of these vegetated habitats. Within its community it is an important forage species: small Pseudopoecilia are eaten by larger predatory fishes such as cichlids of the genera Cichlasoma and Andinoacara (formerly Aequidens) rivulatus (Glodek 1978), underlining its ecological role as an abundant prey fish rather than a top consumer.
Feeding
Direct dietary studies of Pseudopoecilia festae are sparse, but its trophic level is estimated at roughly 3.0, consistent with a small omnivore that takes a mix of plant and animal matter. As a small poeciliid of densely vegetated streams and springs, it can be expected to graze on algae, detritus and small aquatic invertebrates, picking food from vegetation, the substrate and the water column in the manner typical of the family.
The species' preference for heavily planted water suggests that aufwuchs — the film of algae, micro-organisms and tiny invertebrates that coats submerged plants and surfaces — forms a significant part of its intake, supplemented by small drifting prey. No dedicated aquarium feeding regime has been published for this fish; care guidance here is extrapolated from general poeciliid livebearer husbandry, under which a varied diet of fine prepared foods together with small live and frozen items, plus access to algal or vegetable matter, would suit a fish of this size and ecology.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, Pseudopoecilia festae reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin that is the defining reproductive structure of the family. There is no egg-laying: fertilisation and the subsequent development of the young both take place within the female.
Detailed observations of courtship and mating behaviour specific to P. festae are not available in the accessible literature, so the fine detail of its mating system — display, mate choice, the balance between courtship and sneak copulation seen in better-studied relatives — remains undocumented for this species. What is reproducibly recorded is the basic poeciliid pattern: internal fertilisation via the gonopodium, with females bearing live young. As is common in the family, females may be capable of storing sperm to fuel successive broods, though this has not been specifically confirmed for P. festae and is noted here only as the family norm rather than a measured fact for this species.
Breeding
Pseudopoecilia festae is a viviparous livebearer. FishBase records that broods of about 3 to 8 young are born roughly every 28 days — a small but regular output typical of a fish of its size. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos through gestation and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than depositing eggs.
The small brood size and roughly monthly birthing interval distinguish this species from the prolific guppies, which produce far larger broods, but the underlying reproductive biology is the same live-bearing pattern. The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish able to swim and feed at once. Beyond the brood size and interval, the specifics of P. festae's reproduction — gestation length under different temperatures, whether superfetation (carrying broods at multiple developmental stages simultaneously, as occurs in some poeciliids) takes place, and fry-rearing requirements — are not documented for this species, and the data here should be read as sparse rather than complete.
In the aquarium
Pseudopoecilia festae is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. No dedicated hobby or specialist care page for the species could be located, and the fish is best regarded as one for the dedicated livebearer enthusiast or the field-oriented aquarist rather than the general hobbyist. Any husbandry guidance is therefore extrapolated from the recorded wild water parameters and from general poeciliid practice rather than from established aquarium experience with this species.
The wild parameters point to a warm, hard, alkaline set-up: temperatures in the low-to-high 20s Celsius (the species tolerates 68–90 °F in the wild), a pH around 7.5 to 8.2, and moderately hard to hard water of 15 to 35 dH. Given its preference for densely vegetated habitat, a well-planted aquarium with ample cover would best suit a small group, and — as with most small livebearers — dense planting would also give fry somewhere to shelter. As a small, schooling forage species it should be kept in a group and not housed with fishes large enough to treat it as prey, which in its native waters includes cichlids. These notes are a reasoned starting point, not a tested regime.
Conservation
Pseudopoecilia festae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, the category applied when there is not enough information to make a sound judgement of a species' extinction risk. The assessment was dated 30 September 2020. The species has not been evaluated under CITES or CMS.
The Data Deficient listing reflects the broader pattern for this fish: it is a sparsely studied, range-restricted livebearer of the western-Ecuadorian Pacific slope, for which population trends, precise distribution and threats are poorly documented. The freshwaters of western Ecuador — the Guayas and Esmeraldas drainages in particular — face pressures from agriculture, urban growth and habitat alteration, so the absence of data is itself a reason for caution rather than reassurance. Resolving its status would require targeted field survey of the small streams, springs and ponds it inhabits; until then, the responsible position is to treat the species as one whose conservation needs are simply not yet known.
