Pseudopoecilia fria is a small trans-Andean livebearer of the Pacific slope of north-western Ecuador, a fish far better known to ichthyologists than to aquarists. Described over a century ago as a Poecilia and later shuffled between Priapichthys and its own little genus, it lives in the clear and turbid rivers of the Esmeraldas region, where it gathers in pools by the hundred and quietly goes about the business that defines its family — internal fertilisation and live birth. It carries Least Concern status on the IUCN Red List, is occasionally taken for the local ornamental trade, and has the dubious distinction of now sharing its pools with introduced guppies.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudopoecilia fria was first described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Arthur W. Henn in 1914 as Poecilia fria, from material collected on the Pacific slope of Ecuador. As the New World livebearers were repeatedly revised through the twentieth century, the species was moved out of the broad, catch-all genus Poecilia and reassigned, at various points being placed in Priapichthys before settling into the small genus Pseudopoecilia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — recognises the species, with Poecilia fria Eigenmann & Henn, 1914 and Priapichthys fria standing as synonyms reflecting that taxonomic history.

The genus name is itself a comment on that history: Pseudopoecilia is built from the Greek pseudes, "false," and the genus name Poecilia (from poikilos, "many-coloured" or "dappled"), so the genus reads as "false Poecilia" — a small Andean relative that resembles, but is not, a true Poecilia. The fish belongs to the family Poeciliidae and the subfamily Poeciliinae, the live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas, and is a member of the small trans-Andean poeciliine radiation related to Priapichthys. The main systematic treatment underpinning its modern placement is Lucinda's 2003 Poeciliidae chapter in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America.

Morphology

Pseudopoecilia fria is a very small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1 in SL, with a maximum published weight of roughly 0.61 g — figures that place it among the diminutive members of its family, on the order of a small wild guppy rather than a molly or swordtail. The body is the elongate, slightly compressed shape typical of small poeciliines, suited to life in the water column of streams and pools.

Detailed published colour and meristic data for this species are sparse, and no photograph is held by FishBase, so a confident description of live coloration cannot be given here without guessing. What can be stated with confidence is the family-level architecture: like all poeciliids, P. fria shows the sexual dimorphism of the live-bearers, with males bearing a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — and females being the larger, plainer-bodied sex. Beyond that, the specific morphological detail for this species is genuinely thin in the literature, and the responsible course is to note the data as sparse rather than to fabricate a description.

Habitat

Pseudopoecilia fria is native to the Pacific (trans-Andean) drainages of north-western Ecuador, where it occurs in the Santiago-Cayapas, Atacames and Esmeraldas basins. It has also been cited for the Mira River in south-western Colombia, but that record rests on literature reports rather than confirmed museum specimens, so the species' presence in Colombia is regarded as uncertain. Its recorded altitudinal range runs from about 98–1312 ft above sea level — the warm lowland and lower-foothill country of the Esmeraldas region.

The fish inhabits permanent rivers, streams and pools, in both clear and turbid waters, and is described as locally abundant: concentrations of hundreds of individuals are frequently found in pools and other calm-water places. It is a freshwater wetland species in the broad sense, occupying the slower margins and standing pools of river systems rather than fast riffles. One ecologically telling detail from the IUCN assessment is that P. fria can now be found cohabiting with the introduced guppy, Poecilia reticulata, an alien livebearer established in the same waters.

Feeding

Pseudopoecilia fria is reported as an insectivore and pelagic zooplankton feeder — taking aquatic insects and small drifting invertebrates from the water column. FishBase places its trophic level at about 3.0, consistent with a small carnivore that lives mainly on animal prey rather than algae and detritus, though as with most small poeciliines a degree of opportunistic omnivory is to be expected.

No dedicated diet study for this species was located, so the picture is drawn from the assessment notes and from what is typical of small pool-dwelling livebearers. The behaviour of gathering in large concentrations in calm-water pools fits a fish that gleans zooplankton and small insects from open water and the surface film. Captive feeding data are effectively absent for this rarely kept species; any aquarium husbandry would reasonably follow the general livebearer pattern of small, frequent feedings of fine live, frozen and prepared foods, but specific captive-diet information is data sparse.

Mating

Reproduction in Pseudopoecilia fria follows the live-bearing pattern of the family Poeciliidae, for which fertilisation is internal. The male transfers sperm to the female by means of the gonopodium, the rod-like organ formed from the modified anterior rays of the anal fin that is the defining reproductive structure of the poeciliine livebearers. No species-specific courtship or mating behaviour has been published for P. fria — FishBase's maturity and reproduction fields are blank — so the account here is necessarily framed at the family level.

In small poeciliines of this kind, males typically pursue females persistently and inseminate them via the gonopodium, and females of many poeciliids are able to store sperm internally and produce successive broods from a single mating. Whether P. fria specifically practises long-term sperm storage has not been documented, and superfetation — the carrying of multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously, known in some poeciliines such as Poeciliopsis and Heterandria — has not been recorded for Pseudopoecilia. These reproductive specifics should be read as inferences from close relatives rather than confirmed facts for this species.

Breeding

As a poeciliid, Pseudopoecilia fria is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The genus is understood to be lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk laid down in the egg, without a true placenta — which distinguishes it from the strongly matrotrophic, placenta-bearing poeciliines such as Poeciliopsis and Heterandria, where the mother supplies nutrients to the embryos throughout gestation.

No confirmed brood-count or gestation figure has been published for P. fria; the relevant FishBase fecundity and gestation fields are empty. For small livebearers of this body size, broods are generally modest, on the order of low tens of fry, but applying a precise number to this species would be guessing, so brood size and gestation length are best treated as data sparse. The fish's reported habit of forming large aggregations in pools, together with its "High" resilience rating on FishBase (population doubling time under fifteen months), implies a reproductively productive species, but the underlying brood statistics simply have not been measured.

In the aquarium

Pseudopoecilia fria is not an established aquarium fish. It is reported to be used locally and nationally within Ecuador as an ornamental species, but it does not feature in the international aquarium trade and there is little to no published hobbyist husbandry for it. As a result, any aquarium guidance can only be extrapolated from its wild ecology and from the keeping of comparable small trans-Andean livebearers, and should be read in that cautious spirit.

Its natural conditions point to warm, soft-to-moderate freshwater of the Ecuadorian lowlands, in rivers and calm pools of clear or turbid water — a profile broadly similar to that suiting other small wild poeciliines. Given its tiny adult size of around 1 in and its habit of forming large shoals in calm water, it would presumably be kept as a peaceful group in a well-planted, gently filtered tank. Because confirmed captive-care parameters for this specific species are absent, the honest position is that detailed aquarium recommendations are data sparse, and a keeper would be working largely from livebearer husbandry generalities rather than species-specific experience.

Conservation

Pseudopoecilia fria is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment 66599043, category LC under version 3.1; assessed 8 October 2014, published 2016). The assessment carries a "Needs updating" annotation. The justification rests on the species being widely distributed within north-western Ecuador, locally abundant, present in at least one protected area, and not subject to any major species-level threat; its population trend is recorded as stable. It occurs within the Mache-Chindul reserve in Ecuador, though no direct conservation measures are targeted at the species itself.

The threats noted in the assessment are habitat-quality pressures rather than direct exploitation: pollution from domestic and urban wastewater, and industrial, mining and oil effluents, together with agricultural and forestry run-off and sedimentation, arising from cropland, livestock, mining, oil transport and urbanisation across its range. Local ornamental use is recorded but is not flagged as a population-level threat. The presence of introduced guppies (Poecilia reticulata) in the same waters is an additional ecological factor worth watching, since alien livebearers can compete with native species, even though the current assessment finds no major threat overall. As an Ecuadorian endemic of limited geographic range, P. fria would benefit from the updated assessment its Red List entry already flags as needed.
