Taxonomy & naming
Xiphophorus andersi was described by Manfred Schartl and Axel Meyer in 1980 from the Río Atoyac drainage in Veracruz, Mexico. It belongs to the genus Xiphophorus — the swordtails and platyfishes — within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus andersi Meyer & Schartl, 1980 as the valid name for the species.
The genus Xiphophorus is one of the most intensively studied groups of fishes in biology, owing to its long history as a model for the genetics of pigmentation and of melanoma. The species epithet honours Professor Dr Fritz Wilhelm Anders (1919–1999), a German geneticist whose work on Xiphophorus tumour genetics made the genus famous in cancer research; the naming reflects the species' origin within that research community rather than any hobby tradition. As with its relatives, andersi sits taxonomically between the deeper-bodied "platy" forms and the sword-bearing "swordtail" forms of the genus, and its discovery added to the picture of how this genus diversified across the rivers of eastern Mexico and Central America.
Morphology
Xiphophorus andersi is a small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2 in total length for males, with females reaching roughly 2 in — a modest size typical of the smaller members of the genus, and in line with the general poeciliid pattern in which females are the larger sex. The common name "spiketail platyfish" points to its intermediate appearance: it carries the compact, platy-like body shape of the genus rather than the dramatically elongated sword of the true swordtails.
Detailed wild-colour and meristic descriptions for this species are sparse in the general literature, and beyond the size figures above the published popular accounts say little about pigment pattern or fin shape. As a Xiphophorus, it shows the genus-typical sexual dimorphism, with males distinguished by the gonopodium (described below) and females by a deeper, plainer body. Rather than guess at colour detail the species does not have well-documented, this account notes that morphological data for X. andersi are comparatively thin outside the primary taxonomic and genetics literature.
Habitat
Xiphophorus andersi is endemic to the Río Atoyac drainage near Chico, in Veracruz, Mexico — part of the Gulf-slope river systems of eastern Mexico. Its known range is extremely small, restricted to this single Atoyac drainage on the Atlantic versant. The species is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of fast-flowing river habitat; the type locality is a swift river of average depth around two metres.
The water is tropical and warm, broadly in the range of about 75–82 °F, with the species recorded from neutral to moderately alkaline water (pH up to about 7.5) and moderate to hard water (dH on the order of 10–25). In its native river it shares the water with other livebearers, including the green swordtail Xiphophorus hellerii and Heterandria jonesi, a community of small poeciliids occupying the same fast Gulf-slope stream. The narrowness of this single-drainage distribution is central to the species' conservation status.
Feeding
Like its relatives, Xiphophorus andersi is an omnivore. FishBase places it at a trophic level of around 3.1, inferred from close relatives, indicating a mixed diet that includes both plant and animal matter. In a fast-flowing river this typically means grazing on algae and aufwuchs (the film of algae, diatoms and micro-organisms on submerged surfaces) together with small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and drifting items carried by the current.
No detailed field study of the diet of this particular species is widely available, so the feeding picture here follows the well-established habits of the genus rather than direct dietary analysis of andersi. In aquarium terms, members of Xiphophorus are undemanding feeders that take prepared flake and small pellets readily and benefit from a share of vegetable or algal matter alongside small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp — though this species is rare in the hobby and is not a routine aquarium subject.
Mating
Xiphophorus andersi is a livebearer with internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive mode of the Poeciliidae. As in all poeciliids, the male transfers sperm to the female by means of the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — rather than by external spawning. Fertilisation therefore occurs inside the female, and the eggs develop and hatch within her body so that she gives birth to free-swimming young.
Species-specific courtship behaviour for X. andersi is not well documented in the popular literature, but the genus as a whole is known for male courtship displays and for the role of female choice in mating, patterns shared widely across the livebearing toothcarps. Female poeciliids are also commonly able to store sperm internally between matings, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single insemination; this is a general feature of the family, though the extent to which it applies in this particular species is not separately documented here.
Breeding
Reproduction in Xiphophorus andersi is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a gestation period of roughly 24 days, after which about 20 to 50 young are born per brood — a moderate brood size consistent with a small livebearer of this body size.
The species shows high biological resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months, reflecting the rapid reproduction characteristic of poeciliids. As with the genus generally, the newborn fry are independent at birth and require cover to avoid predation, including from adults. Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — occurs in some poeciliid genera but is not documented as a feature of Xiphophorus andersi, and is not claimed here. Beyond the gestation and brood-size figures above, dedicated captive-breeding accounts of this rare species are limited.
In the aquarium
Xiphophorus andersi is rarely kept and is not a standard aquarium fish; what aquarium presence it has is largely within specialist livebearer-keeping and conservation circles rather than the general trade. Its requirements would follow from its wild habitat: warm tropical water around 75–82 °F, neutral to moderately alkaline chemistry (pH up to roughly 7.5), and moderately hard water, with the brisk, well-oxygenated flow of its fast-river origin favoured over still conditions.
Because it co-occurs naturally with the green swordtail, care should be taken to keep it well away from congeners with which it might hybridise — a real concern across Xiphophorus, where interspecies crossing is easy and can compromise the genetic integrity of a maintained line. For a range-restricted, Endangered endemic, the responsible approach to keeping it is to treat any aquarium stock as a conservation population: maintained pure, documented, and never released. This species is best regarded as a fish for experienced livebearer specialists rather than a general community subject.
Conservation
Xiphophorus andersi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii,v), in an assessment dated 27 March 2018. The listing reflects the species' very restricted range — it is a single-drainage endemic confined to the Río Atoyac in Veracruz, Mexico — together with a declining quality of habitat and number of mature individuals, the factors captured by the B1 criteria.
For a fish whose entire known world distribution is one small river system, threats to that single drainage translate directly into threats to the species' survival, and there is little geographic buffer against localised habitat degradation. This makes X. andersi a species of genuine conservation concern within the Mexican livebearer fauna. The most useful contribution an aquarist can make is to support maintenance of pure, well-documented stock through specialist livebearer-conservation programmes and to ensure that captive lines are never allowed to hybridise with the common swordtails of the hobby.
