Taxonomy & naming
Xiphophorus clemenciae was described by the Mexican ichthyologist José Álvarez del Villar in 1959, who named it for his wife, Clemencia. It belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers — and to the genus Xiphophorus, the swordtails and platyfishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, treating Xiphophorus clemenciae Álvarez, 1959 as the accepted combination. For much of its history it was regarded as a rare, narrowly endemic species of the Río Coatzacoalcos basin in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca, Mexico.
The species has long been a taxonomic problem. Morphologically it is a swordtail and superficially resembles members of the southern swordtail group such as X. hellerii and X. alvarezi. But mitochondrial DNA studies (Meyer and colleagues in 1994; Marcus and McCune in 1999) placed it away from that southern clade and closer to the platyfishes and northern swordtails — making it an apparent "orphan" within the genus. Subsequent work by Kallman, Walter, Morizot and Kazianis at the Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center (2004) proposed grouping clemenciae with X. mixei and X. monticolus in a distinct lineage, and in the course of that work found the species to be far more widespread and abundant in the upland Río Coatzacoalcos basin than its rare reputation implied — in places replacing X. hellerii.
The most provocative idea about the species concerns its origin. A hybrid-origin hypothesis advanced by Meyer, Salzburger and Schartl holds that X. clemenciae arose through natural hybridisation between a platyfish female and an ancestral sworded male, with the female's pre-existing preference for sworded males driving the cross — a rare proposed case of a vertebrate species formed by hybridisation and shaped by sexual selection. The conflicting morphological and molecular signals that made the fish an "orphan" are, on this reading, the expected fingerprint of such a hybrid ancestry.
Morphology
Xiphophorus clemenciae is a small swordtail. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2 in SL, and hobbyist accounts describe a body of roughly 2 inches (around 2 in) excluding the sword — roughly half the size of the X. hellerii commonly seen in the hobby. The body is comparatively compact, with a pointed snout and a pointed dorsal fin, and a fan-shaped caudal fin from whose lower edge the male's sword extends.
Despite the common name "yellow swordtail," the live fish reads as more blue than yellow, marked with two or three red vertical bars along the flank; the sword itself is more orange than yellow and the fins are tinged with orange. Males occur in two developmental forms — early-developing individuals that mature small with a long sword, and late-developing individuals that grow into a deeper body with a shorter sword — a polymorphism consistent with the genus's well-known genetic control of male size and maturation timing (probable XX/XY sex determination).
Hobby populations preserve recognisable local types. A "grande" form from the Río Grande area of Veracruz is described as skinnier and longer-bodied with a curved sword, while a "finca" form linked to the San Carlos type locality in Oaxaca is deeper-bodied with a short sword — a reminder that, as with many Xiphophorus, geographic origin matters and mixed stock should be kept and labelled carefully.
Habitat
The species is native to the Río Coatzacoalcos drainage of south-eastern Mexico, in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca, with FishBase placing it in the Coatzacoalcos and Papaloapan freshwater ecoregions of North America. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic, non-migratory fish of small upland waters.
It is characteristically found in small streams and brooks with a light current, and in rockpools, in areas with extensive limestone outcroppings. It is reported to be relatively uncommon in fast-flowing streams, favouring the gentler, calcareous habitats instead. FishBase gives a tropical temperature range of about 72–79 °F, a pH of roughly 7.2–8.0, and water hardness around 3–10 dH — the hard, alkaline chemistry one would expect of limestone country.
The limestone setting is the practical key to the species. The calcium-rich water of its native brooks underlies both its preferred chemistry in the aquarium and the hard, mineral-rich conditions under which captive populations do best. Later field surveys associated with the Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center found the fish to be reasonably widespread and locally abundant in the uplands of the Coatzacoalcos basin, contradicting its older image as a rare, isolated relict.
Feeding
Detailed wild dietary studies are sparse, but X. clemenciae has the trophic profile of a typical small swordtail. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with an omnivore that takes a mix of small invertebrates, aufwuchs (algae and the associated micro-organisms growing on rock and limestone surfaces) and detritus from its stream and rockpool habitats.
In the aquarium it is unfussy but does noticeably better on a varied, protein-rich diet. Hobbyist accounts link breeding success to "meaty" feeding: a quality dry food supplemented with freeze-dried meaty foods and Spirulina, frozen and live foods, and the occasional parboiled, mashed pea as plant matter. Algae-grazing is part of its natural behaviour, so some vegetable or algal content is worth maintaining.
As with other small livebearers, several modest feedings suit the fish better than one large meal, and a balance of animal and plant foods supports both colour and condition. The species' preference for high-protein fare is one of the husbandry details that turned its early reputation for difficulty into routine success in well-fed colonies.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, X. clemenciae practises internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from elongated and specialised anal-fin rays — which transfers sperm to the female. As in the rest of the genus, courtship in swordtails involves the male displaying to the female, and the sword is itself a sexually selected ornament: female preference for sworded males is central to swordtail biology and is the very mechanism invoked in the hypothesis that this species arose by hybridisation.
The genus is well known for genetically determined variation in male size and maturation timing, and X. clemenciae shows this clearly in its early- and late-developing male forms. Small early-maturing males with long swords and larger late-maturing males with deeper bodies and shorter swords represent alternative life-history strategies under the species' probable XX/XY sex-determination system.
Social behaviour around mating is vigorous. Males are aggressive toward one another and toward maturing younger males, and females also fight, so reproduction in captivity is best managed in a colony with enough space and structure to diffuse aggression rather than in a cramped pair.
Breeding
Xiphophorus clemenciae is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a gestation of about 24–28 days, after which the female delivers roughly 10–15 young — a modest brood, in keeping with the species' small size. Superfetation (carrying multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously), seen in some poeciliids, is not a documented feature here; data on it for this species are sparse and the literature describes discrete broods.
The fish is considered a high-resilience species, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months, reflecting steady, repeated reproduction rather than huge single broods. As with other livebearers, females can be expected to store sperm and produce successive broods, so isolating wild-type or local-form stock matters if a clean population is to be maintained.
Practical breeding accounts give a realistic picture of the numbers involved: one hobbyist's pair produced seven fry, of which four survived. Newborns are fully formed and free-swimming and need cover and good feeding — fine foods and newly hatched brine shrimp — to grow on. Clean, still-to-gentle, calcium-hard water and a well-fed adult colony are repeatedly cited as the conditions under which broods are raised successfully.
In the aquarium
The species carried a reputation for being difficult — the Baensch atlas rated it 4 out of 5 for difficulty, and European hobbyists in the 1980s found it demanding — but North American keepers later reported it as unproblematic once its preferences were met. The reconciliation of those experiences is instructive: success is tied to clean water, the right chemistry, and a high-protein diet, not to any genuine fragility.
Water chemistry is the central requirement. The fish wants hard, alkaline, calcium-rich water in keeping with its limestone home, and keepers recommend tufa or limestone rock, or crushed coral, to keep the hardness and pH up. Temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius (about 72–79 °F) and clean, well-maintained water suit it; accounts variously emphasise still, clean conditions and gentle filtration, with some noting it also tolerates moderate flow and grazes algae.
Because males are aggressive to other males and to maturing youngsters, and females also fight, the species is best kept as a colony rather than a single pair, in a tank of at least around 30 inches with caves, plants and gentle filtration to break up sightlines and provide refuge. Given those conditions — hard calcareous water, a varied meaty-plus-Spirulina diet, and enough space and structure — it is a rewarding and not especially demanding swordtail.
Conservation
Xiphophorus clemenciae is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 24 October 2018. The Data Deficient category reflects insufficient information to make a confident assessment of extinction risk rather than a judgement that the species is secure or threatened. It is not listed under CITES or CMS.
That designation sits somewhat at odds with newer field knowledge. Surveys associated with the Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center found the fish to be reasonably widespread and locally abundant in the upland Río Coatzacoalcos basin, where in places it replaces X. hellerii — a marked contrast to its older reputation as a rare, isolated endemic. At least one specialist livebearer commentator has argued that, given this wider abundance, the species could plausibly be reconsidered relative to its Red List status.
As a localised freshwater fish of a single river system, X. clemenciae nonetheless depends on the limestone-stream and rockpool habitats it favours, and habitat alteration in the Coatzacoalcos uplands is the kind of pressure that would matter most to it. For aquarists, maintaining well-documented, locality-labelled captive lines (the recognised "grande" and "finca" forms among them) is a meaningful contribution to keeping the species' genetic diversity intact outside the wild.
