Taxonomy & naming
Xiphophorus alvarezi was described by Donn Eric Rosen in 1960 as part of his broad revision of the swordtail and platy genus. The species sits in the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, within the order Cyprinodontiformes; it belongs to the swordtail lineage of Xiphophorus, the group of species whose males carry a sword-like ventral extension of the caudal fin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus alvarezi Rosen, 1960 as the valid name.
The genus name Xiphophorus combines the Greek xiphos, a sword, with pherein, to carry — literally "sword-bearer," for the trailing caudal extension of the males. The specific epithet alvarezi is an eponym honouring Dr José Álvarez del Villar (1903–1986), the Mexican biologist and ichthyologist regarded as the founder of modern Mexican ichthyology. The English common name, Chiapas swordtail, points to the species' core range in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
Within the swordtails, X. alvarezi belongs to a cluster of Central American forms that includes the widespread green swordtail (X. hellerii) and the related X. signum. It resembles both but is recognisably more slender, and its colour pattern — a deep, bright horizontal red stripe down the mid-body — distinguishes it from its relatives at a glance.
Morphology
The Chiapas swordtail is a small, streamlined poeciliid. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 3 in for females; males are smaller in body but carry the elongated caudal sword that gives the genus its name, so that including the sword a mature male measures something on the order of 4.5 in overall. The body is notably more slender than that of the familiar green swordtail, a build suited to its fast-flowing native habitat.
Colour is the species' signature. A horizontal red stripe runs down the midline of the flank, deeper and brighter than the comparable marking in related swordtails, and it is this clean red line on a relatively plain body that hobbyists prize. In males the sword — the lower extension of the tail fin — is bright yellow and edged in deep black, a crisp two-tone finish that stands out against the body.
As in all swordtails the sexes are easily told apart. Males bear the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to deliver sperm internally, together with the long caudal sword; females lack both, are deeper-bodied and plainer, and grow somewhat larger in body. This is the standard poeciliid pattern of sexual dimorphism, expressed here in a wild-type fish that has not been reshaped by the fancy-strain breeding lavished on the domestic swordtail.
Habitat
Xiphophorus alvarezi is a Central American freshwater fish of the upper Río Grijalva basin and neighbouring drainages. Its range spans the Mexican state of Chiapas and, across the border, the Guatemalan departments of Huehuetenango, El Quiché and Alta Verapaz. Hobby accounts associate the aquarium stock with the Río Santo Domingo drainage in Mexico, one of the tributary systems of this upland region.
The species is described as an inhabitant of fast-flowing rivers — a current-loving stream fish rather than a still-water pond dweller. FishBase classes it as a benthopelagic, tropical freshwater species, and the water it lives in is warm, hard and alkaline: recorded conditions are roughly 77–82 °F, pH around 7.2–8.1, and a hardness of about 10–20 dH. These are the clear, mineral-rich running waters typical of the limestone country of Chiapas and the Guatemalan highlands.
With a high resilience and a short population-doubling time, the Chiapas swordtail is a robust species within its range. Its preference for moving, well-oxygenated water is the main thing that sets its habitat apart from that of the lowland, more sluggish-water livebearers, and it is a useful cue for anyone keeping the fish.
Feeding
Like the other swordtails, X. alvarezi is an omnivore that grazes and hunts across the small-prey spectrum, with a trophic level near 3.1 — squarely that of a small mixed feeder taking both animal and plant matter. In its fast-water habitat that means aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates drifting in the current, together with algae and the associated micro-organisms scraped from surfaces.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and will take any standard fare, but hobby breeders note a clear preference for live foods, mosquito larvae and Daphnia in particular. A varied diet that leans on small live and frozen foods, supplemented with good flake or micro-pellets and some vegetable or algal content, keeps the fish in colour and breeding condition.
As with livebearers generally, frequent small feedings suit an active, near-constant grazer better than one heavy meal, and overfeeding is the more common error than underfeeding.
Mating
Reproduction in the Chiapas swordtail is internal, the defining feature of the poeciliid livebearers. The male fertilises the female by means of the gonopodium, the modified and elongated anal fin that channels sperm; courtship in swordtails is an active business, the male pursuing and displaying to the female with his coloured body and sword.
The sword itself is bound up in this mating system. Across the genus, the male's caudal extension functions as a display structure in courtship, and the bright yellow, black-edged sword of X. alvarezi is part of the visual signal a male presents. Females, as in other swordtails, can store sperm internally, so that a single mating can fuel more than one brood.
Direct observations specific to this species are sparse, and the account here rests on the well-documented general biology of Xiphophorus together with the species' recorded reproductive figures. What is clear is that the Chiapas swordtail follows the standard swordtail pattern: internal fertilisation, male display centred on colour and sword, and live birth rather than egg-laying.
Breeding
Xiphophorus alvarezi is a viviparous livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a gestation of about 24–30 days, after which a normal brood numbers roughly 20–80 young — a substantial brood for a fish of this size. A specialist hobby breeding account is consistent with this: a three-inch female gave birth to 42 young after a gestation of about five and a half weeks at a cool 72 °F, the lower temperature lengthening the gestation toward the top of the recorded range.
There is no parental care. The same hobby report is emphatic that the female must be removed after giving birth, as she will readily eat the fry; the adults are predatory on their own young, so dense planting or separation of the brood is essential to raise good numbers. The fry are born fully formed and able to swim and feed at once, and grow on finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp in the usual livebearer way.
No superfetation — the carrying of several broods at different stages of development simultaneously — is reported for this species; that specialised reproductive mode is characteristic of certain other poeciliid genera rather than the swordtails, and the available data for X. alvarezi describe a single brood carried to term at a time.
In the aquarium
The Chiapas swordtail is one of the wild-type swordtails that only occasionally appears in the hobby, and it is kept by livebearer enthusiasts precisely because it is the unadorned, natural fish rather than a fancy strain. It is a lively, active species; a hobby account suggests a trio or a couple of pairs do well in a tank of around 20 gallons (a 20-long footprint suiting their swimming style), with males' activity and sword-display best appreciated in a group.
Water should match the species' wild habitat: warm, hard and alkaline, broadly 77–82 °F with a pH on the alkaline side of neutral, and — reflecting its fast-flowing river origin — clean, well-oxygenated water with some movement. These are robust, adaptable fish, but they are stream specialists and reward attention to current and water quality more than the average pond livebearer does.
The main husbandry caution is the species' habit of eating its own fry, so a breeder keeping the line going needs cover or a separation plan for each brood. As an active, current-loving swordtail it is best paired with tankmates that share its conditions and are not so delicate as to be harried; with that proviso it is a rewarding and relatively hardy fish for the keeper who wants the genuine wild article.
Conservation
Xiphophorus alvarezi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The assessment carries the species identifier 191774, and the species is treated as not currently at risk at the global level; it is neither listed by CITES nor by the CMS.
The Chiapas swordtail is a resilient species with a high population resilience and a short doubling time, and it occupies running waters across a reasonably broad upland range spanning southern Mexico and adjacent Guatemala. FishBase records its use in commercial fisheries as well as the aquarium trade, and it is considered harmless to humans.
As with any range-restricted freshwater fish of a single river system, the long-term security of X. alvarezi rests on the health of the upper Río Grijalva drainage and its tributaries; for now the species is not flagged as threatened. The responsible aquarist note is the usual one for livebearers: hardy, fecund fish like this should never be released into local waters outside their native range.
