Taxonomy & naming
Aborichthys pangensis was formally described in 2019 by Shangningam, Kosygin, Sinha and Gurumayum in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 29, issue 4, pp. 361–370), alongside a second new species, Aborichthys kailashi, from the same general region of Arunachal Pradesh. It sits in the genus Aborichthys, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and a group whose taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination, Aborichthys pangensis.
The species epithet follows the standard Latin place-name pattern, formed from "Pange" — the Pange River, its only known locality — plus the suffix "-ensis," meaning "of" or "from" that place. As with many recently described Himalayan nemacheilids, the description rests on a small series of specimens from a single stream system, and no synonyms or older combinations are in use for this name.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data specific to A. pangensis has not been gathered for this profile beyond its placement in Aborichthys, a genus of small, elongate, laterally compressed nemacheilids. Like other stone loaches in the family, it can be expected to show the near-scaleless or very finely scaled skin typical of the group, along with the barbels and small, ventrally set mouth used for picking food from stream substrate. Many nemacheilids, including Aborichthys species, carry a small erectile spine below the eye that can be raised defensively — a feature worth handling carefully when netting or moving the fish.
Size has not been documented for A. pangensis specifically in the sources available for this profile; congeners in Aborichthys and the wider Nemacheilidae are typically modest, in the range of a few centimetres to around 4 in, and this species is presumed to fall in a similar small-bodied range until a fuller description or trade data becomes available. This is honestly thin ground, and we would rather note the gap than guess at a figure.
Habitat
The only known locality for Aborichthys pangensis is the Pange River, a stream in the Brahmaputra drainage of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India — foothill and montane country at the edge of the eastern Himalaya. Streams in this region are typically cool, clear and fast-flowing, running over rock, gravel and coarse sand, with strong current and high dissolved oxygen — the classic nemacheilid habitat of a stone loach clinging to the substrate in flowing water rather than drifting in open water or still pools.
No broader range is documented: as far as current records show, this is a single-stream endemic, which is common among recently described Himalayan brook loaches and reflects how poorly sampled many of these headwater systems remain. Given the genus and the setting, a cool-to-moderate flowing-water regime is the reasonable expectation rather than a warm, still one; this should not be treated as a blackwater or lowland species.
Feeding
No feeding data has been published for A. pangensis specifically. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are benthic micro-predators, working the streambed for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — using barbels and a downturned mouth to root them out from between stones and gravel. A closely related Aborichthys species, A. elongatus, is documented taking insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans in the wild and readily accepting live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm in captivity; this is a reasonable proxy for how A. pangensis likely feeds, though it is inference from a congener rather than a direct record.
In practice, any fish of this genus should be offered small, meaty foods that sink promptly to the bottom, since these are not surface or midwater feeders and are unlikely to compete well for floating flake.
Mating
No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour has been documented for Aborichthys pangensis. Congeners in the genus and the wider family Nemacheilidae are not known for any elaborate courtship or pair-bonding; they are egg-scattering fish, and breeding in the wild is generally tied to seasonal rises in flow during the monsoon. Nothing specific can be said here beyond that general pattern, and it would be dishonest to invent detail this species does not yet have on record.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for Aborichthys pangensis in the aquarium or, so far as available sources show, described in detail in the wild. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a family are egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, and there is no parental care of eggs or fry. Home spawnings of this genus are rare to unreported, and a fish known from a single remote Himalayan stream and described only in 2019 has essentially no aquarium-breeding history to draw on.
The honest summary is that this species is not bred in captivity as far as current records show; anyone attempting it would be working from the general nemacheilid template of gravel egg-scattering in strong current rather than from any species-specific account.
In the aquarium
Aborichthys pangensis is not an established aquarium fish — there is no evidence of a trade in this species, which makes sense for a nemacheilid described in 2019 from one stream in Arunachal Pradesh. Anyone who did encounter it, most likely as a wild-collected specimen rather than a farmed one, should treat it as a small, cool-to-moderate-water stream loach: strong current, high dissolved oxygen, a hard substrate of gravel and rounded stone, and clean, well-filtered water are the baseline, following the pattern set by its better-known relative A. elongatus, which is kept at a relatively cool 59–70 °F with pH around 6.5–7.5 and flow of several times tank volume per hour.
As with other nemacheilid and hillstream-type loaches, the skin is delicate and the fish is likely sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be conservative. A still, warm, low-flow community tank would be the wrong environment for this genus; it wants moving, oxygen-rich water that mimics its home stream, not a static blackwater setup.
Conservation
Aborichthys pangensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status here is recorded honestly as Not Evaluated rather than guessed. As a species known only from a single stream in Arunachal Pradesh and described as recently as 2019, it has had essentially no time to accumulate a conservation record, and no population or threat data is available in the sources consulted for this profile.
Single-locality endemism is inherently a conservation concern in principle — any species restricted to one stream is vulnerable to whatever affects that stream, from water diversion to sedimentation to pollution — but without a formal assessment or targeted survey data, no specific threats can be attributed to this species with confidence. There is no indication of an aquarium trade in A. pangensis, so trade pressure is not a documented concern here.
