Taxonomy & naming
Acanthocobitis pictilis was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2012, with the type material drawn from the Ataran River drainage (upper Salween basin) in Myanmar and, in the original description, from the Mae Khlong drainage in Thailand as well. Subsequent work by Singer & Page (2015) restricted true A. pictilis to the Ataran River population and split the Mae Khlong fish off as a separate species, Physoschistura maekhlongensis — a reminder that the taxonomy of small Southeast Asian stone loaches is still being actively resolved and that closely related, similar-looking populations are easy to conflate.
The species sits in the genus Acanthocobitis, within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one whose generic boundaries (Nemacheilus, Schistura, Physoschistura, Acanthocobitis and others) have been repeatedly reshuffled as researchers reassess character sets. The Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid combination Acanthocobitis pictilis; no further revision is reflected in the record consulted here.
Morphology
Acanthocobitis pictilis is a small loach, reported at roughly 3–3.5 in standard length — modest even by stone-loach standards. Its most distinctive feature, and the source of its name, is a pattern of dark brown triangular saddles running down the upper body, a bolder and more angular marking than the diffuse blotching seen in many related species. The lateral line is complete, and the dorsal fin carries 12½–13½ branched rays, both characters used to separate it from close relatives in the original description.
As in other members of Nemacheilidae, the body is slender and subcylindrical, built for holding station in current rather than for open water, and the skin is effectively naked — the scales, where present, are tiny and deeply embedded. Where the cache material speaks to it, the genus follows the family pattern of carrying a small erectile spine beneath the eye, a feature shared across the true loaches and one that matters for handling; keepers should treat any Acanthocobitis with the same care given to other spined loaches.
Habitat
The species is known from a tight cluster of streams and rivers in the upper Salween basin straddling the Myanmar–Thailand border: the Ataran River, the Hanthayaw River, and the Kasat and Suriya rivers, with the type locality a small stream called "Chon Son" between Kyondaw and Phadaw. This is classic stone-loach country — shady, fast-flowing stretches and riffles alternating with deeper pools, clear and well-oxygenated, over a substrate of sand, gravel, rocks, boulders and leaf litter.
Water conditions at the known sites run cool to moderate and are reported at roughly 70–79 °F with a pH of 6.5–7.5 and low hardness — noticeably cooler and softer than the warm, still water often assumed for tropical fish, and consistent with a species that depends on strong flow and high dissolved oxygen rather than sluggish, warm backwaters.
Feeding
Acanthocobitis pictilis is a benthic micropredator, foraging over riffle substrate for small invertebrates. The available account identifies larval chironomids (non-biting midges) and ephemeropterans (mayfly nymphs) as principal prey items — exactly the kind of current-loving insect larvae that colonise stony, well-oxygenated riffles, and exactly the food this loach's body plan and small mouth are built to hunt.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live and frozen foods that mimic this diet — Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp) and bloodworm are all noted as accepted. As with many small, current-adapted micropredators, it may show little interest in flake or other food designed to float or drift slowly through still water, and feeding is best aimed at the bottom where it naturally forages.
Mating
No information on courtship, pairing behaviour, or external sexual dimorphism has been located for this species; nothing in the source material describes how males and females differ or how spawning is initiated. This is not unusual for a stone loach described as recently as 2012 and known from a handful of streams — most Nemacheilidae species have never been observed spawning, in the wild or in captivity, and Acanthocobitis pictilis appears to be no exception. Data here should be treated as genuinely sparse rather than assumed.
Breeding
Breeding is unrecorded in the aquarium for this species. What can be said follows the pattern typical of the genus and the wider stone-and-brook-loach group: Acanthocobitis species are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward. There is no cave-guarding, no mouthbrooding and no pair-bonding behaviour in this group — those are patterns from other fish families entirely.
In practice, Acanthocobitis pictilis should be considered essentially unbred in captivity. Like most small nemacheilid stream endemics, it is more likely to be maintained and occasionally line-bred by chance in a well-run biotope aquarium than deliberately spawned, and any successful reproduction would be a notable, undocumented event rather than a repeatable protocol.
In the aquarium
Very little husbandry information specific to this species has been documented, but its biology sets clear expectations. Given its riffle-dwelling, high-oxygen native habitat, it needs strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen and cool-to-moderate temperatures in the 70–79 °F range rather than a warm, still tropical setup — a powerhead or strong filter outflow and a substrate of sand, gravel and smooth stones with some leaf litter would best replicate its home streams. Being small and benthic, it is best kept over a soft, rounded substrate that will not abrade its underside as it works the current.
As a near-scaleless true loach it should be assumed to share the family's sensitivity to copper-based and full-strength medications, warranting half-doses and gentle treatment choices if disease control becomes necessary. With so little published on temperament or social needs, a cautious keeper should default to giving it the company of its own kind in a modest group, in keeping with the social, current-loving habits typical of small nemacheilids, while recognising that firm guidance for this particular species does not yet exist.
Conservation
Acanthocobitis pictilis has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List. Given the species was only described in 2012 and is known from a small number of streams along the Myanmar–Thailand border, this Not Evaluated status likely reflects a genuine data gap rather than confirmed security, and the true conservation status of its wild populations is unknown.
No information on trade pressure, collection for the aquarium hobby, or habitat threats specific to this species was found in the material reviewed. As with many restricted-range Southeast Asian stream loaches, the most plausible long-term risks — if any exist — would be habitat-linked (deforestation, water extraction, damming) rather than documented aquarium-trade impacts, but this cannot be stated with confidence for this species without further assessment.
