Taxonomy & naming
Paracanthocobitis pictilis was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2012, originally placed in the genus Acanthocobitis. In 2015, Rupert Singer and Lawrence Page published a revision of the "zipper loaches" — Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis — splitting the group and describing five new species; that work moved this species into Paracanthocobitis, where the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, currently places it as Paracanthocobitis pictilis.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with the great majority of its hundreds of species, like this one, known from only a handful of streams. Because the genus was reshuffled so recently, older references and some retailer listings may still carry the original combination, Acanthocobitis pictilis; both names refer to the same fish.
Morphology
This is a slender, elongate stone loach, reported to reach roughly 3–3.5 in standard length, with males running somewhat smaller than females in the type material (around 3 in SL in males versus up to about 3 in SL in females). Like other members of its family it carries a small, erectile spine beneath the eye — the suborbital spine typical of nemacheilids — and a body that is effectively naked to the touch, its scales tiny and deeply embedded rather than forming an obvious armour.
The species epithet pictilis, from the Latin for "painted" or "variegated," points to its patterned appearance, in keeping with the banded and blotched markings typical of Paracanthocobitis and Acanthocobitis loaches. Detailed colour description and diagnostic morphology are confined to the original taxonomic literature; beyond the type description this remains a poorly documented, rarely photographed fish.
Habitat
Paracanthocobitis pictilis is known only from the Ataran River and the Hanthayaw River, tributaries that straddle the Myanmar–Thailand border in the upper Salween River basin. It is a strictly freshwater species, living in flowing stream habitat rather than still water.
It requires clear, well-oxygenated water with strong dissolved oxygen levels — the hallmark of the fast, clean streams that stone loaches depend on. No population data beyond the original records is available, and given how narrow its known range is, it should be treated as a genuine stream endemic rather than a widespread species that merely happens to have been recorded in two rivers.
Feeding
Like other Nemacheilidae, Paracanthocobitis pictilis is a bottom-dwelling micro-predator, foraging over stream substrate for small invertebrates rather than grazing algae or biofilm. In the wild this almost certainly means insect larvae and small crustaceans picked from gravel and stones in current.
In the aquarium, stone loaches of this type generally accept sinking dried foods alongside small live or frozen items such as Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia) and bloodworm. Because it is a bottom feeder in flowing water, food should reach the substrate rather than being left to dissolve at the surface, and a varied diet of small meaty foods is the safest approach for a species with no detailed dietary study of its own.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Paracanthocobitis pictilis. In the type material, males and females differ somewhat in maximum size, with females reaching a larger standard length than males, but no reliable external sexing characters or breeding tubercles have been reported. As with most Nemacheilidae, any pairing or spawning behaviour in the wild is essentially unrecorded.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for this species, in captivity or otherwise. Based on the pattern seen across the stone and brook loaches, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer: adults broadcasting eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. This is the honest picture for the vast majority of Nemacheilidae — small, data-sparse stream endemics that are essentially never spawned by hobbyists and have no commercial breeding programme behind them either. Anyone acquiring this species should expect to keep it, not to breed it.
In the aquarium
Paracanthocobitis pictilis is essentially unknown in general aquarium circulation, and care information traces to the same handful of sources as its taxonomy. What is documented calls for cool-to-warm, clear, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water — a powerhead or strong filter outflow to replicate stream current is more appropriate than a still community tank. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate suits a bottom-dwelling loach that spends its time working the streambed.
Males are reported as bold and territorial, and a mixed-sex group of six or more is recommended to spread that behaviour across a shoal rather than concentrate it on one or two individuals. As with other nemacheilids, the skin is near-scaleless, so this is a fish that should be dosed cautiously with medications and never treated with copper-based products at full strength. Given how little is documented about this species, keepers should treat any husbandry advice as inference from its family and close relatives rather than settled fact.
Conservation
Paracanthocobitis pictilis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; no published status could be found, and it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed category. As a fish known only from two tributary rivers on the Myanmar–Thailand border, it fits the profile of many nemacheilid stream endemics: a narrow range that has simply never been the subject of a conservation assessment, which is a data gap rather than evidence of either safety or risk.
No population trend, threat assessment or trade data specific to this species is available. Any pressures it faces would most plausibly track the same drivers affecting other upper Salween basin streams — water quality, flow alteration and land-use change in the catchment — but none of this is documented for the species itself, and it should not be assumed to be either common or threatened without a formal assessment.
