Taxonomy & naming
Balitora burmanica was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1932 from specimens collected in Burma — now Myanmar — and the species epithet reflects that origin directly. The genus Balitora was established by Gray in 1830 for hillstream loaches of the Indian subcontinent and mainland Southeast Asia, and Hora's new species was placed there on the strength of its characteristic flattened Balitorid form.
The family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches or river loaches) has been substantially reorganised over the past few decades. Some authorities formerly placed much of this group within a broadly-defined Homalopteridae, and the internal phylogeny continues to be refined as molecular data accumulate. Within the Cobitoidea — the superfamily that unites all loaches — Balitoridae stands apart from the botiid loaches, the kuhli loaches (Cobitidae) and the stone loaches (Nemacheilidae). The genus Balitora contains a modest number of species distributed across rivers of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and adjacent mainland Asia; Hora's 1932 combination Balitora burmanica remains the valid name as listed in the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Like all true hillstream loaches, Balitora burmanica is strikingly flattened from top to bottom. The head is broad and depressed, the body tapers to a slender caudal peduncle, and the paired fins — pectorals and pelvics — are extended horizontally so that the fish's entire ventral surface lies against the substrate. Together these form a natural sucker that allows the loach to cling to smooth, fast-washed rock in torrential current without being swept away. The body is effectively naked, with scales so small and deeply embedded that the skin feels smooth; this lack of a protective scale armour is a significant point for medication sensitivity.
Colouration is a cryptic pattern of dark spots and blotches on a pale brown or grey ground — the basis of the vernacular name 'spotted hillstream loach'. Maximum standard length is reported at around 2–2.5 in, making it a small species well suited to a modest-sized aquarium provided that aquarium meets its demanding water-quality requirements. The suborbital spine present in botiid loaches is not a feature of balitorids; Balitora burmanica has no erectile spine below the eye.
Habitat
Balitora burmanica is native to the Salween River drainage of Myanmar. The Salween (also called the Nu or Thanlwin) rises on the Tibetan Plateau and descends through deep gorges into Myanmar before reaching the sea — its headwater and mid-elevation tributary streams are cool, clear, rapid, and run over bedrock, boulders and coarse gravel. These are among the most highly oxygenated freshwater environments on earth: fast laminar flow over rock keeps dissolved oxygen near saturation year-round, and water temperatures in the elevated reaches remain distinctly cool.
This is emphatically not a warm-water, still-water or turbid fish. Its natural microhabitat is the rock face in a mountain or foothill torrent, where it grazes the thin skin of algae, diatoms and associated microorganisms — the aufwuchs or biofilm — that coats every submerged stone. Flow, oxygen, cool temperature and a biofilm-covered rocky substrate are not optional extras but the basic fabric of its existence. An aquarium that fails to provide them fails this species.
Feeding
Balitora burmanica is a committed aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In the wild it rasps the thin mat of algae, diatoms, protists and fine detritus from rock surfaces, working methodically over the biotope it clings to. This is a food source that no standard fish food replicates well, and the species is notorious for declining and eventually starving in tanks that lack it.
In the aquarium, success with feeding depends on establishing a mature biofilm before the fish are introduced. Rocks and flat stones that have been left in a running, lit tank for many months accumulate the layers of algae and microbial film the fish needs as its staple diet. Supplements include blanched greens — courgette, cucumber, spinach and spirulina wafers sunk against the rockwork — and small frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops, which provide the protein fraction. Bloodworm and similar large frozen items are rarely taken with enthusiasm. The fish should never be expected to thrive on flake food alone, and it should never be placed in a newly set-up tank, however clean the water chemistry may be.
Mating
Very little is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Balitora burmanica specifically, and data on mating in the genus generally are sparse. Sexual dimorphism appears slight: females of comparable hillstream loach species tend to be noticeably broader across the body when gravid, but out of breeding condition the sexes are essentially identical to the eye. Conditioning a suspected pair or small group requires feeding varied, high-quality foods over an extended period in a mature, well-established tank.
In the wild, spawning in torrent-dwelling hillstream loaches is presumed to be seasonal and tied to the hydrological cycle of the home stream — rising water levels, changes in temperature and flow as monsoon rains alter the river, and the flush of fresh nutrients and oxygen that accompanies flooding. Replicating these cues in a home aquarium is rarely attempted and has not been documented in this species.
Breeding
Balitora burmanica is not bred in home aquaria, and there are no published accounts of successful spawning in the hobby. It is an egg-scattering species: like other hillstream loaches in genera such as Sewellia — where occasional spawnings have been documented in mature, high-flow river tanks — it would deposit eggs among stones and gravel with no parental care, but the conditions required to trigger spawning are almost certainly beyond what most keepers can provide.
The honest keeper's position is that this is a fish to acquire for enjoyment of its living behaviour in a carefully maintained biotope tank, not as a breeding project. Fish available in the trade are wild-caught from Myanmar, which is an additional reason to keep them in optimal conditions and make them last.
In the aquarium
Balitora burmanica is a specialist that rewards the keeper who builds a tank around it rather than fitting it into an existing community. The non-negotiable starting point is water: cool (64–75 °F), fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated, and chemically clean. A powerhead or wavemaker creating strong, laminar flow across a rocky hardscape is essential; the fish should be visible spending much of its time clinging to and moving over rocks in the current. Water quality must be high, with negligible ammonia and nitrite and low nitrate; partial water changes of 20–30 % weekly help maintain the conditions of a clear mountain stream.
The tank must be mature — ideally running for at least a year before these fish are introduced — because the rockwork must carry a dense, continuous coat of biofilm. A bare or freshly set-up tank, however correct its chemistry, offers nothing for the fish to eat and it will starve invisibly over weeks. Once biofilm is established, supplement with spirulina wafers and blanched greens placed directly on the rocks.
Being effectively scaleless, Balitora burmanica is sensitive to copper and to standard doses of many aquarium medications. Any treatment for ich or other disease should be at half the standard dose, with careful monitoring, and copper-based treatments avoided entirely. Tank companions should be chosen to match the cool, fast-water conditions — hillstream loaches, some cool-water danios, or similar rheophilic species — rather than warm tropical community fish. A 200-litre aquarium with good flow and a substantial rock structure is a realistic minimum for a small group.
Conservation
Balitora burmanica has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its range in the Salween drainage of Myanmar is relatively remote, which has historically limited collection pressure but also means that population data are sparse and the species has received little systematic attention from conservation biologists.
The Salween is one of Asia's longer free-flowing rivers, though hydropower development in its upper reaches is ongoing and represents a potential long-term threat to riverine fauna. As a stream specialist adapted to fast, clean, cool, well-oxygenated water, Balitora burmanica would be acutely vulnerable to any deterioration in water quality, increased siltation from deforestation, or reduction in flow from damming. Fish available in the aquarium trade are wild-caught, so keeping them in appropriate conditions and maximising longevity in captivity is the most direct conservation contribution a keeper can make.
