Taxonomy & naming
Schistura cincticauda was described by the British zoologist Edward Blyth in 1860, one of many small Asian stream loaches he named during his long tenure at the Asiatic Society of Bengal's museum in Calcutta. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with the genus Schistura alone holding well over 200 recognized species scattered across South, Southeast and East Asia.
The species sits within what recent taxonomic work refers to as the cincticauda species group, a cluster of a dozen or more closely related Schistura sharing the diagnostic black caudal-base bar. As with many small-bodied Schistura, older literature has sometimes filed this species under the historic catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus; the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, places it in Schistura, and that combination is used here.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, with type-locality specimens measuring only about 1 in standard length; FishBase gives a maximum of roughly 2 in SL for the species. The body carries 6–8 regular brown bars set against yellow interspaces, and — the feature that gives the species its epithet, cincticauda, "girdled tail" — a broad, complete black bar crosses the base of the caudal fin. Fine diagnostic details separate it from close relatives in the cincticauda group: males lack a suborbital flap, the lateral line is incomplete and reaches only to the pelvic-fin origin, there is no black mark on the lip, no axillary pelvic lobe, and the pectoral and caudal fins carry 9 branched rays with an emarginate caudal margin. Some populations also show dark marks on the sides of the lower lip's median interruption.
As a nemacheilid it carries the family's characteristic erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye, and — like all loaches in this section — very fine, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked. That near-scaleless skin is worth remembering by anyone who might one day keep it: it is a point of medication sensitivity common to the whole family, even though this particular species has no documented aquarium-keeping history to draw on.
Habitat
Schistura cincticauda is known from the Salween River drainage, with its type locality in the Mae Nam Moei watershed roughly 19 mi north of Mae Sot, Thailand, on the Thai–Myanmar border. Its broader range extends across eastern Myanmar and western and southern Thailand, with records also reported from Laos. It lives in small to medium streams of this system, a benthopelagic fish that holds close to the bottom of clear, cool, well-oxygenated hill and foothill water flowing over rock and gravel.
No specific temperature or pH readings have been published for the species, which is typical for a narrow-range stream endemic that has drawn little targeted study. Its close relatives in the genus, and the family as a whole, are stream specialists that depend on strong current and high dissolved oxygen rather than the warm, still, blackwater conditions associated with many other tropical aquarium fish — a general pattern this species almost certainly shares, even without site-specific data confirming it.
Feeding
No diet has been documented specifically for Schistura cincticauda. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are bottom-foraging micro-predators, working over gravel and among stones for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — and this species' body plan and stream habitat are entirely consistent with that pattern, though it should be read as an inference from the family rather than a confirmed observation.
With no aquarium-keeping record to draw on, there is nothing published about feeding response in captivity. Any keeper working with this species would need to proceed cautiously, offering the small live and frozen foods that related stream-dwelling Schistura are known to take, and watching closely rather than assuming flake or dry foods would be accepted.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura cincticauda. No sexual dimorphism has been described for the species, and given how little field or aquarium observation exists, even basic questions — how males and females are told apart, what triggers ripening, whether spawning is seasonal — remain open.
Breeding
Breeding data for this species is effectively nonexistent, and that gap should be stated plainly rather than papered over. Based on the reproductive pattern general to Nemacheilidae, Schistura cincticauda almost certainly spawns as an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward — but this is an inference from family-level biology, not a documented observation of the species itself.
There is no record of this species being bred, or even reliably kept, in a home aquarium. Like the great majority of small-bodied Schistura, it is a wild stream specialist with no aquarium breeding history to report.
In the aquarium
Schistura cincticauda is not established in the aquarium trade. It has no dedicated care profile from the major hobbyist references, is not indexed on specialist loach sites, and appears to be essentially unknown to keepers outside of the scientific papers that describe its distribution and anatomy. Any fish reaching a tank would almost certainly be a rare, incidental import rather than a deliberately traded species.
What can be said follows from its stream biology rather than from direct keeping experience: as a small, cool-water rheophilic stone loach it would need a well-oxygenated setup with strong current, a rocky or gravel substrate, and stable, clean water rather than the warm, sluggish conditions many community tanks provide. As with other nemacheilids, its fine scales and near-naked skin would call for caution with medications and copper-based treatments. Given the total absence of a keeping record, this section is necessarily short — there simply isn't a documented care history to responsibly expand on.
Conservation
Schistura cincticauda is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient. That rating fits the pattern of a narrow-range stream endemic, known mainly from its Salween-drainage type locality and a scatter of records across eastern Myanmar, western and southern Thailand and Laos, with too little population or threat data available for a full assessment.
No trade pressure has been documented for this species — it is not established in the aquarium trade, so any conservation concern would come from habitat pressures general to the region's streams (deforestation, water extraction, damming) rather than collection. Given the DD rating, the honest position is that the population trend and true extent of any threat remain unknown pending further field study.
