Balitora tchangi is a small hillstream loach of the fast-flowing upper Mekong drainage in Yunnan, southern China, where it clings to rock faces in cool, well-oxygenated torrents and rasps biofilm from every surface it can reach. Like all members of family Balitoridae, its body is dorso-ventrally flattened and its paired fins form a ventral sucker-like platform — morphological adaptations so complete that the fish appears almost glued to the substrate in the heaviest current. It reaches roughly 2 in standard length, making it a compact specialist rather than a showpiece, and it is rarely seen in the trade. Those who keep it face a clear demand: replicate a cool, mature, high-flow stream or the fish starves and suffocates in short order.

Taxonomy & naming

Balitora tchangi was described by Zheng in 1982 from specimens collected in the Xishuangbanna region of Yunnan Province, China, within the upper Mekong (Lancang River) drainage. The type locality places it firmly in the Mekong basin, one of the world's most biodiverse river systems. The species name honours Dr Tchung-Lin Tchang (1897–1963), a pioneering Chinese zoologist and ichthyologist, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the authority as Zheng, 1982.

The genus Balitora is the type genus of family Balitoridae (Swainson, 1839) — the hillstream or river loaches — and shares the family with other torrent specialists such as Homaloptera, Sewellia and Gastromyzon. Older literature sometimes placed these fishes in a broader Balitoridae that also encompassed stone loaches (now Nemacheilidae), but current taxonomy treats these as distinct families. No subspecies of B. tchangi are currently recognised. The genus Balitora currently holds more than twenty valid species distributed across South and Southeast Asia, and B. tchangi is one of its northern, continental representatives.

Morphology

Balitora tchangi is a small fish, reaching approximately 2 in in standard length. The body is markedly flattened from top to bottom — depressed rather than laterally compressed — and broadens at the paired fins before tapering to a slender caudal peduncle. The head is flattened and blunt, with a subterminal mouth adapted for scraping biofilm from hard surfaces. The pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged and held horizontally, the four limbs of an adhesive platform that presses the fish against rock in fast current.

FishBase records ten dorsal soft rays and seven anal soft rays. The skin is described as essentially scaleless or finely scaled, which is characteristic of the family and has direct implications for disease sensitivity. The suborbital spine characteristic of botiid loaches is absent in Balitoridae; the main defence is the sucker platform and the ability to press flat against rock. Coloration in the genus is typically cryptic — dull brown or olive with mottled or barred patterning that provides camouflage on rock surfaces — though precise colour data for this species in life are sparse in the available literature.

Habitat

Balitora tchangi inhabits the torrent reaches of the upper Mekong drainage in Yunnan, southern China, with the type locality at Xishuangbanna — a subtropical region at relatively low elevation for the Mekong system. The fish is a rheophilic specialist: it lives on and among rocks in fast-flowing, clear, cool, well-oxygenated water. The substrate is rock, gravel and coarse sand swept clean by current; fine silt or stagnant patches are not its habitat.

The Lancang River (upper Mekong) in Yunnan is characterised by high gradient, strong seasonal flow variation, cool water temperatures and high dissolved oxygen. Research on the fish fauna of this system emphasises that rheophilic specialists like Balitora depend on uninterrupted flow and cool temperatures, both of which are directly threatened by the cascade of large hydroelectric dams being constructed along the river. B. tchangi is described as a subtropical species by FishBase, but the habitat — shaded, fast, well-oxygenated torrents — is distinctly cooler than the warm still water typical of lowland tropical aquariums.

Feeding

Balitora tchangi is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. Like other Balitoridae, it uses its subterminal, fleshy mouth to rasp algae, diatoms, bacteria and associated microorganisms from rock surfaces. In its natural stream environment a continuous supply of biofilm grows on every exposed stone, replenished by high light and constant current-delivered nutrients. The fish moves systematically across these surfaces, supplementing its diet with small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms — encountered in the substrate and periphyton.

In the aquarium, meeting this dietary need is the central challenge. The fish requires a mature tank with well-established algae and biofilm growth on rocks and glass — a newly set-up or bare tank offers nothing to graze, and the fish slowly starves even if other foods are present. Supplementary feeding with sinking wafers and pellets high in spirulina or algae content, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and small live or frozen invertebrates such as daphnia, brine shrimp and tubifex helps, but it is not a substitute for a mature biofilm surface. Keepers should resist the urge to clean algae from rocks and glass: that film is the fish's primary nutrition.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Balitora tchangi has not been documented in the available literature. In closely related hillstream genera, ripe females are typically plumper in the abdomen when in breeding condition, but this distinction can be subtle and is unreliable in routine observation. The small body size and the rarity of the species in the trade mean that sexing individuals in an aquarium context is generally not achievable without direct comparison of multiple fish.

In the wild, mating in hillstream loaches is thought to be seasonal and tied to changes in current, temperature and water level associated with the monsoon. Males in some genera of Balitoridae have been reported to prepare shallow depressions or nests in the substrate into which females release eggs, though documentation of this in Balitora specifically is absent from the sources available. The combination of rheophilic habitat requirements and the need for seasonal cues makes mating behaviour very difficult to observe and essentially impossible to replicate in a standard aquarium.

Breeding

Balitora tchangi has not been bred in home aquaria to any documented degree, and no reliable captive-spawning accounts are available in the sources reviewed. It is an egg-scattering species with no parental care: based on the wider Balitoridae biology, adults release eggs among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water, and neither parent tends the clutch or the larvae. A few hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature, high-flow river tanks by experienced keepers, establishing a proof of concept for the family, but most genera including Balitora have not followed suit under aquarium conditions.

The honest position for this species is that it is essentially unbreedable in the average home aquarium. The obstacles are considerable: the need for cool, strongly flowing, highly oxygenated water; the difficulty of sexing fish; the likely requirement for seasonal cues such as temperature fluctuation and altered flow; and the extreme rarity of the species in captivity to begin with. Keepers interested in breeding hillstream loaches would be better advised to start with a better-documented species such as Sewellia lineolata or Pseudogastromyzon cheni before attempting the less-studied Balitora.

In the aquarium

Balitora tchangi is an advanced-keeper species with specific needs that must be met from day one. The most critical requirement is flow: the fish must have strong, continuous current across a rocky substrate, produced by a powerhead or circulation pump positioned to sweep the tank bottom and replicate a stream rather than a pond. This current also drives the oxygenation the fish depends on — in still or poorly oxygenated water it will suffocate. Temperature should be kept on the cool side appropriate for a subtropical torrent fish; warm tropical temperatures increase stress and oxygen demand while reducing dissolved oxygen capacity.

The tank must be mature before B. tchangi is introduced. A well-established aquascape of smooth and rough stones, with visible algae and biofilm growth on surfaces, is not a cosmetic preference but a feeding infrastructure. The fish is near-scaleless, which means it absorbs medications readily and is sensitive to copper and full-dose treatments — if disease strikes, use the gentlest effective product at a reduced dose and watch closely. The species should not be mixed with boisterous or fast-moving companions that will outcompete it for food or disturb its grazing. A dedicated stream-biotope setup with compatible small rheophilic species, strong flow, cool water, and a biofilm-covered rockscape is the appropriate environment; a standard community tank is not.

Conservation

Balitora tchangi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its native range — the fast-flowing torrent reaches of the upper Mekong (Lancang River) in Yunnan — is under serious and documented threat from the large-scale cascade of hydroelectric dams being constructed along that system. Research on the Lancang-Mekong fish fauna documents substantial loss of rheophilic specialists as dams fragment habitat, alter flow regimes, warm and de-oxygenate water, and block dispersal routes. Balitora tchangi, as a torrent specialist with apparently restricted distribution, is likely to be among the most vulnerable fish in this system.

The species is virtually absent from the aquarium trade, so no meaningful collecting pressure exists. The threat is entirely habitat-driven: the conversion of wild torrent to reservoir behind each successive dam eliminates the precise habitat this fish occupies. Until a formal IUCN assessment is completed, the conservation status is formally Not Evaluated, but the trajectory of its habitat gives cause for concern. Aquarists in possession of this species should regard it as a potentially significant keeper of a range-restricted endemic.
