Taxonomy & naming
Bhavania arunachalensis was described by Nath, Dam, Bhutia, Dey and Das in 2007. The species epithet, arunachalensis, is a latinised toponym meaning "of Arunachal Pradesh", the Indian state from whose streams the type specimens were collected. The genus Bhavania was erected by Hora in 1920 for a group of small, torrent-adapted balitorid loaches from southern and eastern India and the eastern Himalayan region; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it as valid.
Bhavania belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream or torrent loaches — one of several families in the superfamily Cobitoidea whose systematics have been substantially rearranged since the early 2000s. The old broad-sense family Homalopteridae, into which many hillstream loaches were once placed, has been progressively split; balitorid genera such as Bhavania, Balitora and Homaloptera now sit in Balitoridae in the narrower sense. No synonyms for B. arunachalensis are on record; the species is known from the original description alone, and no subsequent revisions of the genus appear to have altered its placement.
Morphology
Bhavania arunachalensis has the characteristic body plan of a torrent-adapted hillstream loach: a strongly depressed (flattened top-to-bottom) head and anterior trunk, broad pectoral and pelvic fins held horizontally, and a streamlined, laterally compressed posterior that tapers toward the tail. This shape, combined with a friction-enhancing ventral skin surface and the sucker-like lip apparatus, lets the fish press itself against smooth boulders and gravel in fast current without being swept away.
Exact maximum length from the original description is not widely circulated in secondary literature, but members of the genus Bhavania are small loaches; a figure in the range of 1.5–2.5 in standard length is consistent with related genera and with the body proportions typical of the group. The coloration of B. arunachalensis, as described at type locality, includes a pale ventral surface and a patterned dorsal surface with darker markings on a brownish or yellowish ground — cryptic tones that blend with the rock and gravel of its native streams. Precise meristic and morphometric data are available only in the original description paper.
The suborbital spine present in botiid loaches (the spine below the eye prominent in Botia and Chromobotia) is not a feature of balitorid hillstream loaches; Bhavania instead shares the generalised balitorid head with a sub-rostral groove and a fleshy lip adapted for scraping. The skin is thin and effectively scaleless over much of the body — a characteristic of balitorids that makes them sensitive to copper-based medications and to any treatment that compromises the mucous layer.
Habitat
The type locality of Bhavania arunachalensis is in Arunachal Pradesh, India — the forested, mountainous state that occupies the far north-eastern corner of the country, bordering Bhutan, China and Myanmar. This is the terrain of the eastern Himalayan foothills and the hills of the Patkai Range, where fast-flowing streams and rivers cut through dense subtropical and montane forest over beds of bedrock, boulder, cobble and gravel.
Like other balitorid hillstream loaches of the eastern Himalayan region, B. arunachalensis is adapted to cool, swift, highly oxygenated water. Streams in this landscape are characterised by high dissolved oxygen from turbulence, low to moderate temperatures relative to the lowland plains, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and very low nutrient loads. The substrate in the fast riffles and rapids where these fish are found is typically bare rock and clean coarse gravel, colonised by a thin film of diatoms, algae and associated microorganisms — the biofilm that constitutes the primary food source. The species is almost certainly a strict rheophile (current-lover) that cannot tolerate warm, still, oxygen-depleted conditions.
Feeding
Bhavania arunachalensis is an aufwuchs grazer — a specialist in scraping biofilm, diatoms, green algae and associated micro-invertebrates from hard surfaces in flowing water. This is the feeding mode of all balitorid hillstream loaches, and the flattened underside, the muscular sucker-like lip, and the rasping dentition are all adaptations for it.
In an aquarium context, this means that the fish's primary food is the mature biofilm that develops on rocks, glass, and other hard surfaces in a well-established tank. It cannot sustain itself in a bare, newly set-up tank where no film has yet formed — starvation in "clean" tanks is one of the most common causes of death in hillstream loaches kept by hobbyists. Supplementary foods should include sinking algae wafers, small sinking pellets, blanched vegetables such as courgette or spinach, and occasional small frozen foods (daphnia, micro-bloodworm). The fish grazes almost continuously; steady access to a biofilm-covered surface is more important than discrete feeding events.
Mating
No published information on the reproductive behaviour, courtship, or sexual dimorphism of Bhavania arunachalensis is available. In the absence of species-specific data, the context for other balitorid hillstream loaches applies: most species show little reliable external sexual dimorphism, though sexually mature females are often rounder-bodied when gravid. Distinguishing the sexes in small hillstream loaches is generally difficult, particularly in young or non-breeding fish.
Breeding seasonality in the native streams of Arunachal Pradesh is likely linked to the monsoon cycle, with rising water temperatures, increased flow volume and changing photoperiod in late spring and early summer acting as spawning cues. Whether B. arunachalensis undertakes any upstream migration prior to spawning, as is documented in some other rheophilic cyprinoids of the region, is not known. The species has not been reported in the aquarium hobby in any numbers, so field observations are the only available basis for inference.
Breeding
Bhavania arunachalensis has not been bred in captivity, as far as can be determined from the available literature. It is an egg-scatterer: hillstream loaches of the family Balitoridae broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among stones and gravel in flowing water, and the adults provide no parental care. A few related hillstream species — most notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been spawned in mature, strongly flowing river-style aquaria, with eggs deposited among fine substrate and stones and left to develop unattended, but these successful breedings remain the exception rather than the rule, tied to very specific water conditions (cool temperature, strong oxygenated flow, mature biofilm-covered surfaces) that are difficult to maintain consistently.
For B. arunachalensis, the honest assessment is that home breeding is not a realistic expectation. The species is rarely if ever available in the trade, its natural history is poorly documented, and no aquarium spawnings have been reported. A keeper fortunate enough to obtain specimens should focus on creating the correct habitat — not on breeding — and should regard any reproductive behaviour as a bonus rather than a goal.
In the aquarium
Bhavania arunachalensis is a specialist fish that is not suitable for a conventional community aquarium. It requires conditions that are sharply different from those of most tropical fish: cool water with strong, turbulent, highly oxygenated flow; a hard substrate of smooth rocks and boulders colonised by a mature biofilm; and low nutrient loads. These are the conditions of a Himalayan hillstream torrent, and they must be approximated deliberately — a river or hillstream biotope tank, not a standard tropical community.
The most critical element is water movement. A powerful flow (typically from multiple powerheads or a dedicated river manifold) providing several times the tank volume per hour is essential, both for oxygenation and to allow the fish to exercise its rheophilic musculature. Without strong flow the fish becomes inactive and declines. Temperature should be kept on the cool side — elevated temperatures reduce dissolved oxygen and are physiologically stressful for a fish adapted to mountain streams; a range in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius (roughly 64–75 °F) is more appropriate than the 79–82 °F of a typical tropical tank, though the exact optimum for this species is not published.
As a balitorid, B. arunachalensis is near-scaleless and absorbs medications readily. It is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many treatments; if medication is necessary, use copper-free products at reduced doses and observe closely for stress. Because hillstream loaches are often kept in hard-substrate tanks with minimal hiding cover, ensure the rockscape provides some shaded retreats where the fish can rest out of the main flow. Tank size should reflect the active nature of the fish and the need for a surface area of colonised rock adequate to support grazing — a long tank with a large footprint is preferable to a tall one.
Conservation
Bhavania arunachalensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and therefore carries no formal conservation status. As a narrow-range endemic described as recently as 2007 and known from a restricted area of Arunachal Pradesh, it almost certainly qualifies as a species of conservation concern under at least provisional criteria, but data are too sparse for a formal assessment.
The eastern Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh support exceptional freshwater biodiversity — the rivers draining this landscape into the Brahmaputra and its tributaries harbour numerous range-restricted fishes, many described only in the past two decades — but they face growing pressure from hydropower development, road construction, deforestation and agricultural encroachment. Hillstream specialists such as B. arunachalensis are especially vulnerable because they depend on clean, fast, well-oxygenated water; siltation, reduced flow, and warming associated with catchment clearance can render a stream unsuitable even before direct habitat destruction occurs. The species has not been recorded in the aquarium trade and is not subject to collection pressure, but the underlying habitat threats remain a real concern for any narrow-range stream endemic in this part of India.
