Taxonomy & naming
Aborichthys kempi was described by the Indian zoologist B.L. Chaudhuri in 1913, from the Egar stream of the Dihang River at Yembung in the Abor Hills — a region now within Arunachal Pradesh, India, and the source of the genus name Aborichthys ("Abor fish", after the Abor/Adi people of the area, plus Greek ichthys, fish). The species epithet honours Stanley Wells Kemp (1882–1945), the English marine biologist and one-time director of the Zoological Survey of India who collected extensively in the region.
The taxonomic history has not been simple. For a period the species was treated as a synonym of the closely related Aborichthys boutanensis, and lost its own identity in some checklists. Shangningam and colleagues (2019) revalidated Aborichthys kempi as a distinct species after re-examining Chaudhuri's original type specimens held at the Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata, restoring the name used here. Aborichthys is a small genus endemic to the Himalayan foothills and northeastern India, and sits within the family Nemacheilidae as a sister lineage to the much larger genus Nemacheilus.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach typical of the stone-loach build — a streamlined body suited to holding station against current rather than the deep, banded look of the botiid loaches sold in shops. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 3 in, making it one of the smaller Aborichthys species. Like other nemacheilids it lacks the prominent erectile suborbital spine that defines the true "spined" loach families (Botiidae, Cobitidae); its defence and disguise instead rest on a cryptic body pattern and its habit of staying tight to the substrate.
As with most small loaches, the skin carries only minute, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally naked and correspondingly sensitive to poor water quality and medication — a point that matters more in fishkeeping than in the wild, where clean, well-oxygenated hill-stream water largely keeps the issue moot. Detailed morphometric and meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; most of what is documented is habitat and locality rather than fine anatomy.
Habitat
Aborichthys kempi is a hill-stream specialist, native to fast-flowing streams with pebbly or rocky bottoms in northeastern India (Arunachal Pradesh) and Myanmar. A dedicated habitat study at Rono stream, a tributary of the Dikrong River in Arunachal Pradesh, tracked conditions across a full year (April 2015–March 2016) and found water temperatures ranging from about 58 °F in the coldest month (January) to 80 °F at the height of the warm season (August), pH between roughly 6.8 and 7.6, and consistently high dissolved oxygen of 7.5–9.1 mg/l — the signature of clear, cold, fast-moving, well-aerated water.
This is a cool-to-warm running-water fish, not a warm still-water one: it lives where the current is strong enough to keep the bottom scoured of silt and the water saturated with oxygen, and its populations are tied tightly to that specific stream character. Being known largely from small tributary systems in a limited part of the eastern Himalayan foothills, it is the kind of species whose entire world may be a handful of named streams.
Feeding
Aborichthys kempi is a bottom-feeding micro-predator in the mould of most nemacheilid loaches, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — from among the pebbles and gravel of its home streams. FishBase lists it at a trophic level of 2.8, consistent with a diet weighted toward small invertebrate prey rather than algae or detritus.
In captivity, keepers report it takes quality flake and sinking pellets readily, alongside frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, mysis and brine shrimp — a diet that mirrors its natural invertebrate-picking habits. As a bottom-oriented fish it does best when food reaches the substrate rather than being dominated by faster mid-water tankmates.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Aborichthys kempi in the available literature. Sex differences are not recorded in the sources consulted here, and nothing is published on how or when pairs form or spawn, whether in the wild or in captivity. This is a common gap for small, range-restricted Himalayan stone loaches, which are far better known from habitat surveys than from reproductive study.
Breeding
Like the great majority of nemacheilid stone and brook loaches, Aborichthys kempi is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care, following the general pattern for the family — but this has not been directly documented for the species itself. Loaches Online states plainly that it has not yet been successfully bred in captivity, and no spawning reports appear elsewhere in the sources reviewed.
This is an honest gap rather than an oversight: most Nemacheilidae are simply not kept or bred by hobbyists in meaningful numbers, and a narrow-range hill-stream specialist like this one is more often encountered in scientific surveys than in home aquaria. Anyone keeping the species should expect to enjoy it as a hardy, active bottom fish rather than as a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Aborichthys kempi calls for a cool-to-mild, current-rich, well-oxygenated setup rather than the warm, still blackwater conditions suited to many tropical loaches. Loaches Online recommends a temperature of 70–78 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.5, with medium-soft to medium-hard water (up to about 12 dH) — figures that track closely with the field measurements from its native Rono stream, though winter lows there dip cooler still. A powerhead or strong filter outflow to create real current, a fine gravel or pebble substrate, and high dissolved oxygen (an air stone or spray bar helps) will suit it far better than a placid community tank.
Keepers describe it as an accomplished digger that excavates burrows under rockwork, and note that males can be territorial toward one another, so rockwork and cave-like retreats should be plentiful enough to break lines of sight. Its adult size stays under about 3 in, so a modest footprint suffices for a small group, but the current and oxygen requirements are non-negotiable. As with other thin-skinned, near-scaleless loaches, treat it gently with medications and avoid copper-based treatments.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Aborichthys kempi as Near Threatened, an assessment dated 22 January 2010. As a species restricted to a small number of hill streams in a limited part of northeastern India and Myanmar, it is inherently vulnerable to the kinds of localized pressures that affect small Himalayan foothill catchments — siltation, water diversion, deforestation of stream banks and general habitat degradation — even without evidence of aquarium-trade collection driving any decline. It is not a fish that appears in the trade in meaningful volume, and there is no indication in the available sources that collection for the hobby is a factor in its conservation status. Protecting the specific streams it inhabits, rather than any trade regulation, is the relevant conservation lever for a range-restricted species like this one.
