Dzihunia amudarjensis is a small, little-known stone loach of the Amu Darya river system in Central Asia, the drainage that gives the genus its name. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the group of slim, clear-stream "stone" or "brook" loaches that make their living picking invertebrates off gravel in cool, fast, well-oxygenated water. Barely 2.5–3 in long, it is a modest, unassuming fish that has never entered the aquarium trade in any numbers, and much of its biology — breeding above all — remains essentially undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Dzihunia amudarjensis was described by the Russian ichthyologist Tamara Rass in 1929, originally placed in the old, broad genus Nemacheilus that for decades served as a catch-all for Eurasian stone loaches. Older literature and databases still list it as Nemacheilus amudarjensis, and it has also been referenced under the synonym Nemacheilus oxianus. As part of the ongoing revision of Nemacheilidae — a family whose genera have been repeatedly split and re-split as the old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex is untangled — it was moved into the genus Dzihunia, and the Catalog of Fishes now treats Dzihunia amudarjensis as the valid combination.

The genus name Dzihunia comes from Dzihun, an ancient Arabic name for the Amu Darya river, and the species epithet amudarjensis simply means "of the Amu Darya," tying the fish directly to its home drainage. A closely related species, Dzihunia pseudoamudarjensis, was described in 2024 from the neighbouring Syr Darya basin, underscoring that this corner of Central Asian ichthyology is still being actively worked out.

Morphology

Like other Nemacheilidae, Dzihunia amudarjensis is a slender, elongate, benthic fish built for holding position on the bottom in current rather than for open-water swimming. It is small even by stone-loach standards, reaching around 2.5–3 in in total length. Detailed morphological description is sparse in the available literature, but the family as a whole is characterised by a near-scaleless or very finely scaled skin, small barbels around the mouth used to feel out food on the substrate, and — in many nemacheilids — an erectile suborbital spine, the same defensive structure found across the wider loach superfamily Cobitoidea.

As with many small Central Asian stream endemics, published material on this species is thin, and no detailed colour-pattern or fin-ray description was found in the sources consulted here. That gap is itself informative: this is a genuinely under-studied fish rather than one whose morphology has simply been omitted from this summary.

Habitat

Dzihunia amudarjensis is native to the Amu Darya basin of Central Asia, with records extending into the Surkhan Darya and Kashka Darya sub-drainages — waters running through modern Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan. It is a fish of running water only: FishBase records it exclusively from flowing streams and river channels, not from still or backwater habitats, consistent with the strongly rheophilic (current-loving) habits typical of stone loaches.

The species lives in cool-temperate conditions rather than warm tropical water, with a preferred range of roughly 50–64 °F and a documented tolerance stretching from about 39 °F to 72 °F — a wide swing that reflects the seasonal extremes of a continental Central Asian climate, from cold winters to warm summer spates. Water chemistry is close to neutral, around pH 6.8–7.5 (tolerating 6–8), and because it depends on flowing water it needs consistently high dissolved oxygen; the fish is noted as susceptible to oxygen deficiency and reliant on good aeration or current.

Feeding

Dzihunia amudarjensis feeds as an omnivore with a lean toward detritus and small invertebrates. Its estimated trophic level of around 2.8 places it closer to the herbivore/detritivore end of the spectrum than to a pure micro-predator, though like most nemacheilids it will also take small insect larvae and other invertebrates off the substrate. Sources describe it as an omnivorous bottom-dweller, grazing and foraging rather than actively hunting in open water.

No aquarium feeding regime is documented for the species, but its wild diet suggests it would take sinking foods readily — small live and frozen items such as bloodworm and daphnia alongside sinking pellets or wafers with a vegetable component — in keeping with its natural mix of detritus and small prey.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Dzihunia amudarjensis was found in the sources consulted. Nothing is documented on sexual dimorphism, seasonal timing, or pairing behaviour for this species; it has not been kept or observed closely enough, in the hobby or in the literature reviewed here, for those details to have been recorded.

Breeding

As with most Nemacheilidae, Dzihunia amudarjensis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward — the standard reproductive mode across the stone- and brook-loach family. Beyond that general pattern, however, essentially nothing specific has been published on this species' breeding biology.

It is not known to have been bred in the aquarium, and given how rarely nemacheilids from this region reach the trade at all, that is unsurprising. The honest summary is that breeding data for this species is sparse to the point of absence, and any account beyond "egg-scattering, no parental care" would be speculation rather than documented fact.

In the aquarium

Dzihunia amudarjensis is not an established aquarium fish — it has no meaningful presence in the hobby, and care information beyond its basic wild water parameters is not available. What can be said is drawn from its natural history: this is a cool-water, current-loving stream fish, not a warm-tropical species, and any attempt to keep it would need to reflect that — cool, clear, well-oxygenated, moving water rather than a warm, still community tank.

At a modest adult size of around 2.5–3 in it would not need a large aquarium, but its dependence on flowing, oxygen-rich water and its apparent sensitivity to low oxygen levels mean strong filtration and current would matter more than tank volume. As with scaleless and near-scaleless loaches generally, caution with medications and copper-based treatments would be prudent, though no species-specific sensitivity has been documented. Given how little is known about this fish in captivity, anyone keeping it would effectively be working from first principles rather than an established care template.

Conservation

Dzihunia amudarjensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. No population trend, threat assessment, or targeted conservation study was found in the sources consulted.

Its range in the Amu Darya, Surkhan Darya and Kashka Darya drainages places it in a heavily used river system — the Amu Darya has been extensively dammed and diverted for irrigation across Central Asia, with well-documented downstream effects on flow and water quality in the basin generally — but no source reviewed here draws a direct link between those pressures and this species specifically. Given the general data-sparse status of small Central Asian stream endemics, a formal assessment would be a natural next step for regional conservation science.
