Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa kafirnigani was described by Dmitri Turdakov in 1948, originally as Nemachilus dorsalis kafirnigani, a subspecies of the widespread stone loach Nemachilus dorsalis, with its type locality in the Kafirnigan River near Dushanbe, Tajikistan — a tributary of the Amu Darya. The genus Nemachilus (also spelled Noemacheilus in older literature) was a broad catch-all for Eurasian stone loaches through much of the twentieth century, and like many of its relatives this taxon has since been moved into Triplophysa, the genus that now holds the great majority of Central Asian and Tibetan Plateau stone loaches.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination, Triplophysa kafirnigani, and it belongs to the family Nemacheilidae — the true stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. As with much of this genus, taxonomic treatment has shifted over the decades as the old Nemachilus/Noemacheilus assemblage was progressively split; the species should not be looked for under its original subspecies combination in current literature.
Morphology
Triplophysa kafirnigani is a small, elongate stone loach built for life on the bed of fast mountain water: a slender, cylindrical body, a flattened underside that helps it hold position against current, and small paired fins used to hug the substrate rather than swim in open water. Like its relatives in Nemacheilidae it carries an erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin, both hallmarks of the family — the spine a small defensive structure below the eye, the naked-feeling skin a point that matters for disease sensitivity and medication dosing rather than for looks.
Detailed morphometric data for this species has not been widely republished since Turdakov's original 1948 description, and no maximum length figure is available from the cache sources here; it should be assumed to be a small nemacheilid in the same general size range as its congeners rather than a large fish. Colouration and fine-scale morphology are best treated as data-sparse pending a fuller modern redescription.
Habitat
This species is known only from the Kafirnigan and Karatog rivers, both tributaries of the Amu Darya basin in Tajikistan, in the mountains around Dushanbe. It lives in steep mountain streams carrying cold glacial runoff — swift, clear, heavily oxygenated water tumbling over rock and coarse gravel, the classic habitat of a high-altitude nemacheilid. This is a coldwater fish of fast-flowing torrents, not a warm lowland or blackwater species.
A 2025 survey of the ichthyofauna of Tajikistan noted that no specimens of this species were recovered during field work in 2017 or 2019, underlining how poorly known and potentially localised its population is. Whether that reflects genuine rarity, a very restricted range, or simply survey difficulty in remote glacial headwaters is not established from available sources — the honest position is that this is a narrow-range endemic about which very little recent data exists.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study is available in the sources consulted here, but Triplophysa kafirnigani can be placed with confidence in the general feeding pattern of the Nemacheilidae: a benthic micro-predator that forages over stones and gravel in fast water for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey swept along or clinging to the streambed.
In the unlikely event it were kept in captivity, such a fish would be expected to take small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates) offered at the bottom, and to largely ignore flake left floating at the surface, in keeping with its close relatives. Mating
No sexual dimorphism, courtship, or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa kafirnigani in the sources available. Data on reproduction in this species is effectively absent from the literature consulted, consistent with its status as a poorly-surveyed, narrow-range mountain endemic that has drawn little research attention since its 1948 description.
What can be said follows from its placement in Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches in this family are typically egg-scatterers rather than pair-spawners with elaborate courtship, releasing eggs over gravel in flowing water with no nest, cave or parental guarding involved.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, there is no record of Triplophysa kafirnigani being bred in the aquarium, and it is not established in the ornamental trade. The expected mode, based on the genus and family, is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the same pattern seen across Nemacheilidae generally.
Given how rarely this species has even been recorded by scientific surveys in its native rivers in recent years, home breeding should be considered essentially undocumented; there is no reason to expect it in a fish that has barely reached the hobby, if at all. Data here is properly described as sparse rather than assumed.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa kafirnigani is not a fish with an established aquarium history, and there is no reliable evidence it circulates in the ornamental trade; this entry is included for completeness of the genus rather than as a care guide for a keepable species. Were a hobbyist ever to encounter true wild-collected stock, the responsible approach would follow what is known of the genus and its habitat: cold, fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated water rather than a standard tropical community setup, a coarse gravel or rock substrate, and strong water movement mimicking a glacial mountain stream.
As a nemacheilid it would be expected to share the family's general sensitivities — near-scaleless skin that responds poorly to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, calling for caution and reduced dosing if illness needed treating. Given the total absence of any established care record, none of this should be read as confirmed practice, only as a reasonable extrapolation from its relatives.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List records Triplophysa kafirnigani as Least Concern. This sits somewhat uneasily alongside field data: a 2025 review of the ichthyofauna of Tajikistan reported that surveys in 2017 and 2019 failed to turn up any specimens from its known rivers, the Kafirnigan and Karatog. That gap between an LC assessment and an apparent absence in recent targeted surveys is worth flagging honestly rather than glossed over — it may reflect a genuinely restricted, hard-to-sample population rather than confirmed decline, but current data does not resolve the question either way.
The species is a narrow-range endemic of the Amu Darya basin around Dushanbe, and its range does not overlap with any documented aquarium trade pressure; the main relevant pressures, where they exist, would be the general threats facing Central Asian mountain streams — water abstraction, damming and land-use change in glacial headwater catchments — rather than collection for the hobby.
