Taxonomy & naming
Formosania davidi was first described by the French ichthyologist Henri Émile Sauvage in 1878, originally placed in the genus Crossostoma under the combination Crossostoma davidi. That placement later became untenable because Crossostoma Morris & Lycett 1851 is a preoccupied name belonging to an unrelated fossil genus. In 1919 Masamitsu Oshima erected the replacement genus Formosania to house these torrent loaches from southern China and Taiwan, with Sauvage's species — Formosania davidi — serving as the type species of the new genus. The authority is thus written with parentheses, (Sauvage, 1878), because the species has been moved out of the genus in which it was originally described.
The genus Formosania is placed in the family Balitoridae (hillstream and torrent loaches) within the superfamily Cobitoidea, a grouping that has been repeatedly reshuffled by molecular work over the past two decades. Some classifications have placed the sucker-bodied torrent loaches of East Asia in a separate family Gastromyzontidae; that arrangement is recognised by some authorities and the ETYFish project treats Formosania under Gastromyzontidae. Regardless of the family-level assignment, the genus and species name are stable under the Catalog of Fishes, and the current valid combination remains Formosania davidi.
FishBase lists the species under reference number 60803 and notes a distribution spanning Fujian and Guangdong Provinces of mainland China and western Taiwan — a range consistent with the broader genus pattern of endemic hillstream communities in the Jiulong River and Pearl River drainages of southeastern China.
Morphology
Formosania davidi is a small, extremely flattened fish reaching approximately 3 in in standard length. The body is strongly depressed — the belly lies flat against the substrate — and the pectoral and pelvic fins are spread horizontally rather than angled downward, together forming the adhesive platform that allows the fish to anchor itself on smooth rock faces in fast current. The head is broad and short, the snout rounded, and the mouth is positioned ventrally, forming a flexible lip structure adapted for rasping biofilm from stone rather than biting food items.
The skin is effectively scaleless to the touch: scales are minute, deeply embedded, and offer little protective barrier — a fact that has direct implications for medication sensitivity. As a member of the sucker-loach assemblage, Formosania davidi likely possesses the pectoral-fin musculature and flattened thorax characteristic of torrent-dwelling balitorids, which together provide clinging traction against fast water. The body patterning is typical of cryptic hillstream loaches, often incorporating mottling or banding that blends with submerged rock and algae.
Formosania davidi shares the near-scaleless integument of related hillstream genera and can be expected to be copper-sensitive, requiring careful half-dose medication protocols should disease treatment be necessary.
Habitat
Formosania davidi inhabits the rocky riffles and runs of fast hill streams in southeastern China and western Taiwan — the kind of habitat sometimes described as white-water torrent in miniature. Water in these channels is cool, clear, and saturated with dissolved oxygen, driven over boulders, cobbles and gravel at speeds that most fish cannot tolerate. The species is strictly rheophilic, confined to the higher-energy portions of stream beds where biofilm and attached algae accumulate on clean rock surfaces.
Fujian and Guangdong Provinces host a varied subtropical-montane ichthyofauna, and the hill-stream reaches occupied by Formosania davidi are typically characterised by low temperatures relative to the surrounding lowland rivers, seasonal variation in flow, high clarity and substrate dominated by embedded rock and coarse gravel. This is a demersal, benthic existence — the fish spends its life pressed against the bottom, moving short distances to graze.
The subtropical climate of the species' range means that water temperatures fluctuate seasonally, dropping notably in winter. Care notes from the closely related Formosania lacustris suggest the genus prefers temperatures of roughly 68–75 °F and would experience stress in the consistently warm water maintained for tropical community fish.
Feeding
Formosania davidi is an obligate biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. In its home streams it rasps diatoms, algae, microorganisms and organic detritus from the surface of submerged rock using its ventrally placed, flexible mouth. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.7 ± 0.2, placing it firmly in the herbivore–detritivore zone — it is not a predator of live invertebrates in any meaningful sense.
This feeding strategy has a critical consequence for aquarium keeping: Formosania davidi will starve in a biologically immature tank that has not yet developed a stable biofilm layer on its rocks and glass. A newly set-up aquarium simply does not offer enough grazing surface to sustain the fish. In a mature tank with well-lit rockwork and a healthy algal coating, the fish can graze continuously through the day, which is its natural occupation.
Supplement the biofilm with high-quality herbivore wafers and sinking algae tabs, blanched courgette or spinach, and occasional offerings of frozen Daphnia or brine shrimp to provide protein. Formosania davidi should not be expected to subsist on flake food or the incidental algae of a community aquarium; it needs a dedicated grazing surface and supplemental feeding to remain in good condition.
Mating
Specific observations of mating behaviour in Formosania davidi are absent from the available literature, and the species has not been documented breeding in the aquarium. Males and females of hillstream loaches in general are often distinguishable at maturity by body depth — breeding females become noticeably plumper through the abdomen when in condition — and in some genera the male's head or snout takes on a rougher texture or tubercles during the reproductive season. Whether these cues apply to Formosania davidi is not confirmed by sources accessible at the time of writing.
In related hillstream genera, the breeding season appears tied to seasonal environmental cues, particularly the drop in water temperature and the change in flow regime associated with cooler weather. In the subtropical streams of southern China, autumn and early spring conditions — cooler, well-oxygenated water in steady or rising flow — are likely to represent the reproductive window. Males in some hillstream species establish small territories over flat stones where spawning takes place.
Breeding
Formosania davidi has not been reliably bred in home aquaria, and published breeding accounts are not available in the sources consulted. Most hillstream loaches are rarely spawned in captivity; the fastidious water quality demands, the requirement for established biofilm, and the absence of seasonal environmental cues in a conventional heated home aquarium all work against it.
In closely related hillstream species such as Sewellia lineolata, spawning has occasionally been achieved in a mature, high-flow river tank with strong water movement and clean oxygenated water over a gravel and stone substrate. The breeding pattern for hillstream loaches where it is known involves egg-scattering among stones and gravel with no subsequent parental care; eggs are demersal and adhesive, lodging in crevices in the substrate. By analogy, Formosania davidi would be expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care if induced to spawn.
Keepers who wish to attempt spawning should prioritise cool water temperatures (68–72 °F), very high flow and oxygenation, a mature tank with abundant biofilm, and a seasonal temperature fluctuation to simulate the natural cue. Success should not be expected as the norm, and the species is not produced commercially in any quantity known to this survey.
In the aquarium
Formosania davidi is a specialist that rewards a targeted setup and fails in a standard community aquarium. The single most important provision is flow: the tank must run a turnover of at least ten to fifteen times the tank volume per hour, directed over flat rocks and along the substrate so that the fish can position itself in the current. A circulation pump in addition to the filter, angled at a rockscape of rounded smooth stones, is the practical approach. The tank must also be mature — a minimum of several months old with visible biofilm and algae developing on the rocks and glass. Without that biological base the fish will graze its enclosure bare and starve within weeks.
Temperature is a second axis of failure. Formosania davidi comes from cool subtropical streams and belongs at 68–75 °F; placing it in a tropical community heated to 79–82 °F leads to slow but predictable decline. A dedicated hillstream tank, or a room kept naturally cool, is the appropriate environment. Water quality must be excellent — low nitrates, high dissolved oxygen, no ammonia or nitrite — because these fish evolved in near-pristine water.
Because the skin is effectively scaleless, Formosania davidi is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive half the standard dose of any treatment. It is a capable glass-climber and the tank must be kept covered. Despite these demands, a correctly set up hillstream aquarium is a vivid and active system: Formosania davidi will graze openly across rock faces in full flow, giving continuous, visible behaviour that more passive community fish cannot match.
Conservation
Formosania davidi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here; the species is recorded as Not Evaluated. Its native range — the hill streams of Fujian, Guangdong and western Taiwan — lies in a region that has experienced significant habitat alteration through dam construction, agricultural run-off, urbanisation, and stream channelisation over the past several decades. Small, range-restricted hillstream loaches are inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation because they depend on clean, fast-flowing water over intact rocky substrates — conditions that are easily disrupted by sedimentation, impoundment or abstraction.
Formosania davidi is not a prominent trade species and is unlikely to face meaningful collection pressure from the aquarium hobby at this time. The greater risk lies in the deterioration of its stream habitat. Comprehensive population surveys across its range are not known to this review, and the absence of an IUCN evaluation means the true conservation picture remains unresolved. The species warrants monitoring, particularly given the ongoing pressures on freshwater systems in southeastern China and Taiwan.
