Taxonomy & naming
Formosania chenyiyui was described by Zheng in 1991; the authority appears in parentheses because the species was subsequently transferred from the original genus into Formosania. The genus Formosania itself was erected by Oshima in 1919 and has at times been treated as a synonym of Crossostoma (Taiwan hillstream loaches), but modern molecular and morphological work upholds its validity. The family Balitoridae, to which the genus belongs, encompasses a broad assemblage of hillstream and torrent loaches across South and East Asia; some authorities further split the family, treating the hillstream gastromyzontines as Gastromyzontidae, in which case Formosania falls within that narrower family.
The species epithet honours Chen Yi-Yu (d. 1944), a Chinese ichthyologist, following the taxonomic convention of commemorating scientists in species names. Its complete mitochondrial genome has been sequenced (16,572 bp, 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and a control region), confirming its species-level distinctiveness within the genus and its placement within the broader hillstream loach clade.
Morphology
Formosania chenyiyui is a small, extremely flattened loach, documented to 3 in standard length. Its most distinctive feature is the overall body plan shared by rheophilic balitorids: the head and anterior trunk are broad and depressed, the paired fins spread laterally and the ventral surface is smooth and adhesive, allowing the fish to anchor itself to rock in fast-moving water without being swept away. The caudal peduncle is comparatively slender and mobile, giving propulsion against the current.
The body is essentially scaleless — the skin is naked or has only vestigial embedded scales — making the fish sensitive to copper-based medications and dissolved chemicals in the same way as other near-scaleless loaches. Coloration follows the typical cryptic hillstream pattern: a brownish or mottled dorsal surface with darker patterning that matches the rocky substrate, providing camouflage against predators in fast, clear water. Related species in the genus (for example F. gilberti, a Taiwan endemic) differ from one another in vertebral counts, body proportions and pigmentation details.
Habitat
This species is native to the Hanjiang and Jiulongjiang river systems in southeastern China, a narrow endemic range that is the primary driver of its Vulnerable status. It inhabits the upper reaches and hill-stream sections of these rivers — swiftly-flowing riffles and runs over rock, cobble and gravel substrate where the current is strong, the water is clear, cold to cool and saturated with dissolved oxygen.
Formosania chenyiyui is a true rheophile: it is not found in slow-moving lowland stretches, impoundments or warm still water. The biofilm and algal crust that forms on stable rocky surfaces in these fast runs is its food source as well as its habitat, so the two are inseparable. Turbid, warm or oxygen-depleted water is inhospitable — the fish cannot survive conditions that depart significantly from clean, cool, flowing stream habitat.
Feeding
Like other balitorid hillstream loaches, Formosania chenyiyui is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In the wild it uses its specialized ventral mouth to rasp diatoms, algae, biofilm and associated micro-invertebrates from the surface of submerged rocks in fast-flowing streams. The diet is predominantly plant-derived detritus and unicellular algae, supplemented opportunistically by small invertebrates trapped in the biofilm layer.
In any aquarium setting this feeding ecology means that a mature, densely colonized rockscape is not a luxury but a necessity. A newly established tank or a bare-bottomed setup offers essentially nothing for the fish to eat, and it will slowly starve regardless of how much sinking food is added. Regular supplementation with blanched greens (zucchini, spinach, cucumber), spirulina-based wafers and occasional small frozen foods (Artemia, Daphnia) can support a fish in a mature system, but the biofilm foundation must be established first.
Mating
There is no documented account of mating or sexing Formosania chenyiyui in captivity, and the species is not known in the mainstream aquarium hobby. General hillstream loach biology suggests that males and females of stream-dwelling balitorids may show subtle differences in body depth or breadth when the female is gravid, but reliable external sexing criteria for Formosania specifically are not established in the available literature.
In related hillstream loach genera, sexual activity is thought to be cued by seasonal changes in water temperature, flow rate and photoperiod corresponding to the cooler, higher-flow conditions of the dry season or post-monsoon period in stream headwaters. Recreating these precise cues in a closed aquarium system is difficult, and no verified spawning of this species under aquarium conditions has been reported.
Breeding
Formosania chenyiyui is not known to have been bred in home aquaria, and there are no breeding records in the hobbyist or scientific literature specific to this species. The honest picture for the genus as a whole parallels that of most hillstream loaches: a few related genera (notably Sewellia from Indochina) have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river-style tanks, dropping and burying eggs among stones and gravel with no parental care, but most balitorid genera have not been reproduced under aquarium conditions.
Breeding mode, where extrapolated from the family, would be egg-scattering among or over rocky substrate in fast-moving water, with no parental investment after spawning. The eggs are presumably demersal and adhesive, settling into crevices between stones. Given the restricted range and Vulnerable status of this species, the trade is not supplied by captive production, and any specimens entering the hobby would be wild-collected.
In the aquarium
Formosania chenyiyui is effectively absent from the aquarium trade and is not an aquarium fish in any routine sense. Should specimens become available, the fundamental requirements match those of other rheophilic hillstream loaches: a tank with powerful, laminar water flow produced by one or more powerheads directing a strong current across a flat rock or slate surface; cool water (following the cool stream temperature of its native range); and, most critically, a mature system with a well-established biofilm covering the rock surfaces.
The near-scaleless skin shared with all balitorids makes this fish sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of many standard medications. Ich and other parasites are a real risk in any stressed fish; treatment, if needed, should use half-doses of copper-free products and be done cautiously. Diet must include spirulina wafers, blanched greens and fine frozen foods, but these only supplement — not replace — a mature biofilm base. Tank size should comfortably accommodate strong directional flow and an adequate expanse of colonized rock. This is a specialist fish for a dedicated river-stream tank, not a community aquarium.
Conservation
Formosania chenyiyui is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated April 28, 2023. The restricted distribution — only two river systems in southeastern China, the Hanjiang and the Jiulongjiang — is the central conservation concern: any local disturbance (dam construction, water abstraction, pollution, siltation) has the potential to affect the entire range of the species.
Southeastern China's hill-stream systems are under substantial pressure from hydroelectric development, agricultural runoff, and altered flow regimes. The species does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade in significant numbers, so collection pressure is unlikely to be a primary driver of decline; the threats are habitat-based. Its Vulnerable status serves as a flag for the broader vulnerability of narrow-range stream endemics in this region, many of which are poorly surveyed and may be more threatened than their current data-deficient or not-evaluated listings suggest.
