Taxonomy & naming
Gyrinocheilus pennocki was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1937, originally placed in the provisional genus Gyrinocheilops before being transferred to Gyrinocheilus — hence the parentheses around the authority. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the type locality as Kemrat, Thailand, placing it firmly in the Mekong drainage. The family Gyrinocheilidae is a small, isolated group within the broader order Cypriniformes, containing only the single genus Gyrinocheilus with three recognised species: G. aymonieri (the familiar Chinese algae eater), G. pennocki, and G. pustulosus.
G. pennocki is distinguished from G. aymonieri in part by the presence of dark spot-like markings on the fins. The three species overlap broadly in the Mekong basin, and their field identification can be difficult; much of what is sold in the trade as a "spotted" or "blotched" algae eater may refer to any of the three. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name and combination.
Morphology
G. pennocki is a stout, cylindrical fish with a flattened ventral surface and a distinctive modified sucker mouth — a muscular, disc-like structure that allows the fish to anchor firmly on hard surfaces in fast water. The lips are fleshy and rasping, adapted for scraping biofilm and aufwuchs from rock. A unique anatomical feature of the family is the division of the gill opening into separate inhalant and exhalant apertures, allowing the fish to breathe while its mouth is pressed to a surface — a solution to the problem of simultaneous suction and respiration in flowing water.
Adults reach around 11 in standard length, making this a large fish by aquarium standards. The body coloration is pale to golden-brown with darker mottling or spotting; the presence of spot-like markings on the fins is one of the characters separating it from G. aymonieri. Like other members of the family the skin is smooth and the scales are small, which confers some sensitivity to harsh medications. There is no erectile suborbital spine in Gyrinocheilidae — that is a feature of the botiid loaches; the algae-eater family has its own anatomical toolkit adapted to surface-clinging life.
Habitat
Gyrinocheilus pennocki is native to the Mekong River basin, occurring across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It inhabits fast-flowing sections of rivers and streams — riffles, rapids and rocky runs where the current is strong and the substrate is composed of large flat stones and boulders. This is a fish built for clinging: the sucker mouth and flattened belly allow it to hold position in water that would sweep most fish away. During the dry season it is concentrated in the rocky sections of smaller streams; seasonal water-level changes shift its distribution across the catchment.
The water of its native habitats is warm, well-oxygenated and generally clear, with strong current continuously renewing oxygen levels at the rocky surfaces where the fish grazes. Temperature in the Mekong system at these latitudes runs roughly 72–82 °F seasonally; pH is broadly neutral to slightly acidic. This is not a still-water or low-oxygen species — it is a current-dependent specialist.
Feeding
Juveniles are biofilm and algae grazers, rasping aufwuchs from rock surfaces with the specialised sucker mouth. This is the behaviour that earns the fish its "algae eater" name and drives its commercial appeal. However, the feeding profile shifts markedly with age: adults eat substantially less algae and increasingly require animal protein — invertebrates, organic detritus, and whatever the current delivers — making the juvenile description misleading as a long-term picture.
In the aquarium, juveniles benefit from a mature, well-lit tank that supports algae growth on hard surfaces, supplemented with sinking wafers, blanched vegetables, and protein-rich foods such as bloodworm and Artemia. Adults need more protein-focused feeding. The key message for keepers is that a Gyrinocheilus will not maintain a tank clean of algae once it grows past juvenile size, and an underfed adult may turn to rasping the slime coat of slow, flat-bodied tankmates — bony fish like angelfish or discus are particularly vulnerable. Adequate, varied feeding from an early stage reduces but does not eliminate this risk.
Mating
Reliable external sexing of Gyrinocheilus pennocki has not been documented for captive fish. Mature females may be plumper-bodied when gravid, but the two sexes are otherwise very alike and difficult to distinguish. Given that these fish are not bred in home aquaria, the question of sexing and pairing is largely academic for the hobbyist.
In the wild, reproduction is presumably tied to seasonal hydrological cycles in the Mekong basin — rising water levels in the wet season shift access to upstream spawning habitats and provide the environmental cues that bring adults into breeding condition. No detailed spawning observations in natural conditions have been widely published for this species specifically.
Breeding
Gyrinocheilus pennocki is not bred in home aquaria. It is an egg-scattering species; in the wild, ripe fish spawn in fast water with no parental care — eggs and larvae are carried by the current, and the adults take no further role. Recreating the combination of large body size, seasonal flow cues and appropriate spawning substrate needed to induce natural spawning is beyond the reach of an ordinary aquarium.
The fish available in the trade are produced on commercial farms in Southeast Asia using hormone induction: brood stock are injected to bring them into spawning condition, the spawn is managed under controlled conditions, and fry are reared in ponds before export. This is the honest breeding picture for the species. A keeper buying a spotted algae eater should do so for long-term enjoyment of the fish itself, with no expectation of breeding.
In the aquarium
Gyrinocheilus pennocki is a specialist fish that is consistently sold as a generalist solution, and the mismatch causes most of the problems keepers encounter. The "algae eater" trade pitch is accurate for a juvenile of 2–3 in; it is a poor description of a 10 in territorial adult that may be turning on its tankmates. Anyone buying this fish should understand from the outset that they are acquiring a large, long-lived, increasingly aggressive river fish — not a perpetual algae-control service.
The practical requirements follow from its biology: a long aquarium with strong filtration providing substantial current (the SeriouslyFish care notes for the congener G. aymonieri specify a minimum tank of 150 × 17.5 in and turnover of four to five times the tank volume per hour), warm water in the 72–79 °F range, well-oxygenated conditions, and a mature surface — glass, rock or hardscape — on which to graze. It should not be kept with slow, flat-bodied tankmates such as angelfish, discus or large goldfish, which are the principal targets of slime-coat rasping. Mixing multiple Gyrinocheilus in a tank often produces intense territorial aggression between individuals.
Being smooth-skinned, it absorbs waterborne medications readily; copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many medications should be avoided or used with great caution. It is best kept by experienced fishkeepers who can house it at its adult size and accommodate its shift in character as it matures.
Conservation
Gyrinocheilus pennocki is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its relatively wide distribution across the Mekong basin in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. However, the Mekong is one of the most heavily dammed river systems in Asia, and the cascade of mainstream and tributary dams constructed in recent decades has substantially altered flow regimes, sediment loads and fish passage across the basin. G. pennocki's fast-water, riffle-dwelling lifestyle makes it directly dependent on the very sections of rivers most disrupted by impoundment — rapids and rocky runs that are inundated or bypassed when a dam is built upstream.
Water pollution, agricultural run-off and overfishing for the food and ornamental trades add further pressure. The IUCN assessment notes increasing threats and the potential for the species to warrant uplisting in future evaluations. The trade in Gyrinocheilus spp. is primarily supplied by hormone-induced farm spawning rather than wild collection, which in principle reduces direct harvesting pressure, though the relative proportion of wild-caught versus farmed fish in the trade for this specific species is not clearly documented.
