Taxonomy & naming
Sewellia patella was formally described by Jörg Freyhof and Dmitry V. Serov in 2000 and placed in the genus Sewellia, which belongs to the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches). The genus Sewellia groups a handful of rheophilic loaches from the Mekong drainage and its Annamite-range tributaries in Laos and Vietnam — a region of exceptional freshwater biodiversity draining the rugged interior highlands of Indochina. Within that group, Sewellia is notable for the extreme flattening and lateral expansion of the body, an adaptation taken further in this genus than in most of its relatives.
The specific epithet patella is Latin for 'pan' or 'dish', a direct reference to the shield-like, flattened body form that so clearly defines the genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name, which remains Sewellia patella Freyhof & Serov, 2000. No synonyms or subsequent genus transfers are on record for this species.
Morphology
Sewellia patella reaches a maximum recorded length of about 2 in standard length — a small loach even by hillstream standards. Its body is strongly depressed (flattened top-to-bottom) and broad across the pectoral girdle, with the pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide and held flat against the substrate, forming together the sucker-like adhesive surface that anchors the fish on rock in fast current. The underside is largely flat; the dorsal surface is convex, streamlined so that the pressure of fast water presses the fish down rather than lifting it free.
The head is blunt and broad, with small, downturned, fleshy lips equipped for rasping biofilm from hard surfaces. The eyes sit dorsally, looking upward and to the sides. As in other Sewellia, males carry distinctive tubercles (small horny projections) on the outer rays of the pectoral fins — rays 1 through 6 — which are absent or vestigial in females. This pectoral-ray dimorphism is the most reliable way to sex the species. The body is largely scaleless or has deeply embedded, reduced scales; the skin is sensitive to copper-based medications and to abrasive handling.
Habitat
Sewellia patella is native to Laos, in the Sekong River system — a tributary of the lower Mekong draining the Annamite mountain range across central and southern Laos into Vietnam. This is a landscape of steep, high-gradient hill streams: rocky, fast-running riffles and rapids with clean, clear water running over boulders, cobble and gravel, shaded by bankside vegetation and swept clean by strong current.
The water in these torrents is cool relative to the lowland rivers of Southeast Asia, highly oxygenated by continuous turbulence, low in dissolved organic matter, and with a moderate to slightly acidic to neutral pH. The substrate is hard rock and coarse stone, filmed with the periphyton — algae, diatoms and the micro-invertebrates that live among them — that sustains the species. There is no still water in this fish's world: the current exceeds a metre per second in places, and any spot that calms for too long is not the habitat of Sewellia.
Feeding
Sewellia patella is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer, feeding primarily on the thin community of algae, diatoms, microorganisms and small invertebrates that colonise submerged rock surfaces in fast water. In its home torrents it rasps this periphyton layer continuously with its fleshy, specialised lips, supplementing the biofilm with micro-sized aquatic invertebrates encountered in the current. This is not opportunistic browsing — biofilm is the staple, and the fish's gut and feeding apparatus are adapted to it.
In the aquarium this diet is the central challenge. A newly established tank has no mature biofilm, and a Sewellia placed into it will not find adequate food. The tank needs months of running with good light and flow before the rock surfaces carry enough periphyton to sustain the fish. Once the biofilm is established, supplement with sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based foods, occasional small frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops, and blanched courgette or cucumber. Flake food and large pellets are generally refused or ignored. Underfeeding is the main way this species is lost in captivity.
Mating
Males of Sewellia patella are distinguishable from females by the tubercles on the outer pectoral fin rays (rays 1–6) — small, raised projections that are absent in females. These tubercles are thought to play a role during courtship or spawning, possibly gripping the female or providing traction on rock. In Sewellia lineolata, the best-studied member of the genus, males have been observed displaying and chasing females across rocks in a mature, strongly flowing river-style aquarium, and spawning has been reported under those conditions.
For Sewellia patella specifically, the mating behaviour has not been described in the scientific literature, but the genus pattern is informative. Courtship is likely brief and tied to flow: cool, highly oxygenated water with strong current appears to be the trigger, as simulating the fast-water conditions of the native habitat is the common denominator in accounts of Sewellia spawning. Both sexes should be well-fed on biofilm and varied foods before any attempt at conditioning.
Breeding
Sewellia patella has not been documented as a regular aquarium breeder, and the honest expectation is that breeding it at home is difficult and uncommon. The genus Sewellia is unusual among hillstream loaches in that spawning has been achieved in aquaria — Sewellia lineolata is the most-cited example — with ripe fish depositing eggs among stones and fine gravel in the current zone of a mature river tank, with no parental care following. The eggs are presumably small and adhesive, tucked into crevices or gravel interstices where the current provides oxygenation.
For Sewellia patella, replicating the conditions that trigger spawning means a mature tank with strong surface agitation or dedicated powerhead flow, cool water (towards the lower end of the tolerable temperature range), well-developed periphyton on the rocks, and a healthy group of both sexes in good condition. Even under ideal conditions most hillstream loaches are rarely or never bred at home; this species is no exception to that general rule, and keepers should approach it as a fish to observe and maintain rather than to breed. The trade in Sewellia patella is supplied by wild-collected fish from Laos.
In the aquarium
Sewellia patella is not a fish for a standard community aquarium. Its core requirements — cool, clean, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water over a mature, biofilm-covered rockscape — are incompatible with the warm, still conditions suited to most tropical community fish, and attempting to combine them risks killing both. A dedicated hillstream setup is the only honest approach: a tank of at least 23.5 in length (larger is better for flow management), fitted with a powerhead or strong canister return to create a unidirectional current across a rocky substrate, and run cool enough that the water holds plenty of oxygen. Temperature in the 64–75 °F range suits the Sekong River habitat; the upper tolerable limit may be somewhat higher, but sustained warmth above 79 °F stresses the fish and reduces dissolved oxygen to dangerous levels.
The rockscape must be mature — months old, with visible algae and a well-established biofilm. Introduce the fish to a new tank and they will not find enough food. Once established, maintain the rock surfaces by ensuring good lighting and avoiding over-cleaning; biofilm is the crop, and overzealous scrubbing destroys the food supply. Keep the water quality high: hillstream fish come from streams that would score as pristine by any standard, so ammonia and nitrite must be zero and nitrate kept low with regular changes of cool, dechlorinated water. The near-scaleless skin is sensitive to medications, particularly those containing copper; treat at half the stated dose and remove carbon if using chemical treatments. A group of three to six is preferable to a lone individual; they appear to tolerate conspecifics and are less reclusive in a group.
Conservation
Sewellia patella has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no published conservation category — it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Small-range stream endemics from the Annamite highlands of Laos and Vietnam are among the least-studied freshwater fishes in the world, and many species in this region have received little or no formal conservation attention despite being potentially vulnerable to localised habitat change.
The pressures on Annamite hill-stream fish are real: deforestation and upland agriculture increase siltation in the rocky, clear-water streams that species like Sewellia depend on; silt smothers biofilm and reduces the oxygen-holding capacity of the substrate. Hydropower development on Mekong tributaries in Laos has also altered flow regimes in affected catchments. The trade in Sewellia species is supplied by wild collection, and while individual specimens are small and the demand modest, continued collection from a restricted range without monitoring carries inherent risk for stream endemics. More survey work and formal assessment of this species are warranted.
