Homalopterula heterolepis is a small hillstream loach from the fast mountain streams of Aceh Province in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Flattened from top to bottom and fringed with broad, horizontally spread paired fins, it is built for one purpose: clinging to rock in torrential, ice-cold water, rasping biofilm from the stone. It reaches about 3 in in total length and carries a Near Threatened status under the IUCN Red List, reflecting genuine concerns about the quality and extent of its restricted upland habitat. In the aquarium it is an unforgiving specialist — cool, fast, highly oxygenated water over a mature, biofilm-covered rockscape is not optional but the bare minimum for survival. Fish kept in warm, still or bare tanks decline quickly, and that single failure of understanding accounts for most deaths in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Homalopterula heterolepis was described in 1916 by the Dutch zoologists Max Carl Wilhelm Weber and Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort from material collected in Aceh, northern Sumatra. It was placed originally in the broad genus Homaloptera, which for many decades served as a catch-all for flattened hillstream loaches across South and Southeast Asia. Subsequent morphological and molecular work demonstrated that the old Homaloptera was paraphyletic, and the genus was divided into several distinct lineages; heterolepis now sits in Homalopterula, a genus erected to accommodate a small cluster of Sumatran species formerly lumped together. The valid combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is Homalopterula heterolepis (Weber & de Beaufort, 1916), with the parenthetical authority noting the change of genus since the original description.

The species belongs to the family Balitoridae — the river loaches — within the superfamily Cobitoidea. Five species of Homalopterula are known, all from Aceh Province in Sumatra, making the genus a narrow island endemic. The species epithet heterolepis is from Greek heteros (different, unequal) and lepis (scale), referring to the variably sized scales that distinguished this fish from its congeners in the original description.

Morphology

Like all balitorid hillstream loaches, Homalopterula heterolepis is profoundly flattened dorsoventrally. The head and body lie low against the substrate, while the pectoral and pelvic fins are extended horizontally into broad, rounded lobes that, together with the flattened belly, allow the fish to press itself tightly against rock surfaces. This body plan functions as a passive sucker: fast water flowing over and around the fish generates negative pressure beneath it, pinning it to the rock without any muscular effort. The mouth is ventral and disc-like, equipped with fleshy lips for scraping aufwuchs.

Adults reach approximately 3 in in total length, placing Homalopterula heterolepis at the smaller end of its family. The body is pale to brownish with irregular dark markings or a mottled pattern that provides camouflage on the stone surfaces it inhabits. The skin has reduced scaling, consistent with the near-scaleless condition seen in many balitorids, which carries medical implications in the aquarium (see below). No erectile suborbital spine is present in this family — that feature belongs to the botiid loaches; Balitoridae instead rely on body shape and adhesion for defence.

Habitat

Homalopterula heterolepis is native to the hill streams and fast-flowing rivers of Aceh Province, at the northern tip of Sumatra. This is a region of steep terrain where short, swift rivers descend from the Barisan Mountains toward the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca. The fish lives in clear, fast-moving, shallow water over bedrock, cobble and boulders — the torrent zone where few other fish can hold position. Dissolved oxygen levels are high, maintained by the turbulence and aeration of fast-moving water over rocks. Water temperature in these upland streams is substantially cooler than in the lowland rivers of tropical Sundaland.

This is a strictly rheophilic (fast-water) specialist. The microhabitat is bare rock covered in a thin film of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria and associated micro-invertebrates — the aufwuchs community on which the fish depends entirely for nutrition. Suitable conditions occur only in upper and mid-catchment reaches; the species does not inhabit still water, lowland rivers or any kind of lentic environment.

Feeding

Homalopterula heterolepis is an aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it rasps algae, diatoms, biofilm and the micro-invertebrates embedded in that film — insect larvae, small crustaceans and meiofauna — directly from rock surfaces. The ventral disc-mouth and the fish's habit of pressing its body flat to the substrate are morphological adaptations to this foraging mode. It does not chase prey in open water and does not efficiently process large food items.

In the aquarium, this feeding strategy means the tank must contain mature, algae- and biofilm-covered surfaces. A newly set up tank with clean glass and bare rock provides essentially nothing for the fish to eat, and it will starve even if sinking wafers are offered — it lacks the behavioural flexibility to shift easily to processed foods. The best approach is to run the aquarium for several months before introducing the fish so that algae and biofilm colonise the rockwork thoroughly. Supplemental feeding with small live and frozen foods (Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm) and blanched greens (courgette, spinach) helps once the fish settles, but a mature biofilm base is non-negotiable.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Homalopterula heterolepis is not well characterised; as with most hillstream loaches, females in breeding condition may appear broader and deeper-bodied when viewed from above, but males and females are otherwise very similar externally. Data from this specific species are sparse, but the pattern is consistent across the genus and family. Separating a breeding pair or group requires patience and close observation of body condition.

In the wild, spawning in balitorid hillstream loaches is generally tied to water conditions — temperature, flow rate, and seasonality all likely play a role in bringing fish into reproductive condition. The details of courtship in Homalopterula are not documented in the accessible literature.

Breeding

Homalopterula heterolepis is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria, and no verified captive spawning accounts are known from the published literature. The general breeding mode for balitorid hillstream loaches is egg-scattering among and beneath stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care; eggs are small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, and the adults take no further interest after spawning. A few hillstream loach species — notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks under aquarium conditions, demonstrating that captive breeding is at least possible within the family. Whether Homalopterula heterolepis is similarly amenable has not been established.

The honest position is that this species is not an aquarium breeding project. Wild-collected fish supply the ornamental trade where the species appears; it is not known to be farm-produced. Keepers should acquire it expecting to maintain it, not breed it, and should source specimens from reputable importers who can confirm origin and condition.

In the aquarium

Homalopterula heterolepis is an expert-level fish that demands conditions far removed from those of a standard tropical community aquarium. The three non-negotiable requirements are cool temperature (64–75 °F; heat stress begins above about 79 °F), very strong water movement, and a mature biofilm-covered rockscape. Without all three simultaneously, the fish declines rapidly. The most common failure is placing it in a warm, still or recently set up tank — it suffocates without high dissolved oxygen maintained by vigorous surface movement, and it starves without the biofilm it evolved to eat.

The tank should be aquascaped with smooth river stones, cobble and slate arranged to create fast-moving channels and surfaces for biofilm growth. Powerheads or wavemakers should create a strong circular current, and surface agitation must be vigorous. Filtration needs to be excellent, as these fish are sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and elevated nitrate; water quality must be pristine, with regular partial water changes. The reduced scaling of balitorid loaches also means sensitivity to copper-based medications and to many common disease treatments — always use half-doses and copper-free products. Tank size should respect the fish's need for physical space and strong flow: a standard 23.5–31.5 in aquarium is a minimum.

Homalopterula heterolepis does not need to be kept in a large group, but tankmates must be chosen carefully — robust, large or boisterous fish will outcompete it for food and stress it. Other hillstream loach species from similar environments can coexist given sufficient territory and biofilm surface area. The species is best kept by aquarists already experienced with rheophilic Asian loaches.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Homalopterula heterolepis as Near Threatened (NT), evaluated in 2018, under criteria B1ab(ii,iii)+2ab(ii,iii). This dual criterion reflects concerns about both the extent of occurrence and the area of occupancy of the species, with a continuing decline inferred for both the area of habitat and the quality of that habitat. The species is restricted to northern Sumatra — specifically Aceh Province — a range that is inherently limited and leaves the fish exposed to any regional deterioration in freshwater quality or hydrology.

Aceh's upland watersheds face pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and changes to water flow associated with land-use change on the Barisan Mountain slopes. Sedimentation and warming of previously clear, cool streams are among the plausible mechanisms of decline. Because the species occurs only in fast, clean hill streams over a small area, it has little capacity to shift range or tolerate degraded conditions. Its Near Threatened status serves as an early warning flag, and a reassessment finding a higher threat category would not be surprising if pressures on Aceh's headwater streams continue. The aquarium trade contribution to any pressure is unlikely to be significant given the species' rarity in the hobby.
