Homalopterula modiglianii is a small Balitoridae hillstream loach endemic to the hill streams of Aceh Province, northern Sumatra, Indonesia. One of six species currently recognised in the genus Homalopterula — every one of them confined to Sumatra — it is a flattened, sucker-shaped rheophile built for clinging to exposed rock in fast, cool, highly oxygenated torrent water. It is almost never seen in the aquarium trade and carries no established common name; outside the technical literature it is known primarily through its congener Homalopterula gymnogaster, whose care requirements it is assumed to share. Like all hillstream loaches it is a biofilm specialist that will starve in a bare or newly-established tank and suffocate in warm, sluggish water — a fish for the specialist who can replicate its demanding stream environment, not a casual addition to a community aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Homalopterula modiglianii was described by the Italian ichthyologist Alberto Perugia in 1893, which accounts for the parentheses around his name in the binomial — the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Homalopterula. The genus Homalopterula was erected by Henry Weed Fowler in 1940 to accommodate a distinct cluster of Sumatran hillstream loaches separated from the broader genus Homaloptera. All six currently recognised Homalopterula species are restricted to Sumatra; H. modiglianii is one of five known from Aceh Province in the far north of the island.

The family Balitoridae has been substantially reshaped by molecular work, and older literature may place these fishes in Homaloptera or in broader aggregates such as Gastromyzontidae or Cypriniformes incertae sedis; the current consensus places Homalopterula firmly in Balitoridae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Homalopterula modiglianii. The epithet modiglianii honours Elio Modigliani, the Italian explorer and naturalist who collected in Sumatra in the late nineteenth century.

Morphology

Homalopterula modiglianii is a small, strongly dorsoventrally flattened loach, its entire ventral surface modified into a broad, smooth, sucker-like adhesion platform that allows it to cling to rock in powerful current. The head is wide, low and bluntly rounded when viewed from above; the eyes are small and set high. Paired fins are held horizontally, extending well to the sides, giving the fish a rayfish-like outline. The caudal fin is forked and the dorsal fin is short-based.

Based on the closely related congener Homalopterula gymnogaster, maximum total length is likely in the range of 2.5–3 in, though precise data for H. modiglianii specifically are lacking in the available literature. The skin carries only very small, deeply embedded scales and is effectively smooth to the touch — a characteristic of Balitoridae loaches that makes them sensitive to copper-based and other medication. Colouration in the genus typically runs to a marbled or mottled brown-and-cream cryptic pattern that blends with the rock substrate of its torrential home streams.

Habitat

Homalopterula modiglianii is native to fast hill streams in Aceh Province, northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Its natural environment is cool, clear, strongly flowing water over exposed bedrock and boulders in upland catchments — the classic rheophile habitat of the Balitoridae. Current velocity in such streams is high, and the dissolved oxygen content is correspondingly elevated; these conditions are non-negotiable for the fish's survival.

Water temperatures in Sumatran hill streams at altitude are distinctly cooler than in the lowland rivers for which most tropical aquarium fish are sourced, typically in the range of 64–75 °F (65–75 °F). The substrate is clean rock and coarse gravel free of silt, and surfaces are colonised by biofilm, periphyton and diatoms — the food source on which H. modiglianii depends entirely. The species is endemic to Sumatra and has no natural range outside Indonesia.

Feeding

Homalopterula modiglianii is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Using its modified, subterminal mouth it rasps diatoms, microalgae and the broader biofilm community from rock surfaces in fast, clear water. This is not opportunistic algae-eating — it is a highly specialised feeding mode entirely dependent on a mature, established layer of microorganisms on hard surfaces.

In the aquarium, a bare tank or a newly set-up system without months of biofilm growth is functionally a starvation environment. Supplemental feeding with sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) and small frozen invertebrate foods such as bloodworm or daphnia can help, but no supplement replaces a robust biofilm carpet on rocks, bog-wood and glass. Keepers should regard the establishment of that biofilm — which requires good light, patience and a mature, cycled system — as a prerequisite for keeping this fish at all, not as an optional extra.

Mating

No species-specific breeding observations for Homalopterula modiglianii exist in the available literature, and the species is not known to have been spawned under aquarium conditions. Sexual dimorphism appears minimal, as is typical across the Balitoridae: females in spawning condition may show a fuller abdomen, but this is not a reliable external character and the sexes are otherwise essentially identical in appearance.

In wild hillstream loaches of this family, reproductive behaviour is generally thought to be tied to seasonal variation in water flow and temperature — rising flows after monsoon rains may cue ripening and spawning. The scarcity of confirmed observations and the demanding husbandry requirements of this genus mean that sexing and conditioning a pair in captivity remains an unrealised goal for all but the most specialist keepers.

Breeding

Homalopterula modiglianii has not been bred in the aquarium to any documented degree. Based on Balitoridae biology, it is an egg-scatterer: eggs are deposited among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water and receive no parental care thereafter. This mode is shared across most hillstream loaches; a few species, notably Sewellia lineolata, have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks set up specifically for the purpose, but the great majority of Balitoridae are rarely or never bred by hobbyists.

The honest position for H. modiglianii is that home breeding is not a realistic expectation. No commercial supply exists; the species is absent from mainstream trade. Any keeper who obtained wild-caught specimens and attempted breeding would need a species-specific setup with strong, directed flow, a deep bed of clean gravel over which fish could spawn, and the patience to identify ripe individuals — all against a backdrop of near-zero documented precedent for the species or genus.

In the aquarium

Homalopterula modiglianii is a genuine specialist fish and should not be acquired without the infrastructure to maintain it properly. The absolute non-negotiable requirements are strong directional flow (a powerhead or river-manifold setup; a standard hang-on-back or canister filter alone is not sufficient), cool water temperature in the 64–75 °F range, very high dissolved oxygen, and a tank mature enough to carry dense biofilm on all hard surfaces. A minimum tank volume of roughly 20–25 US gal with a long footprint to accommodate current is appropriate; taller tanks are less suitable than wide, shallow ones.

Because the skin is effectively scaleless, H. modiglianii — like all Balitoridae — is sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of many common aquarium medications. Half-doses and careful product selection are mandatory whenever disease treatment is needed. A small group of three or more individuals is preferable to a solitary specimen; these loaches are not strongly shoaling but fare better with conspecifics than alone. Tank décor should prioritise flat stones, slate slabs and smooth boulders that replicate the rock-face habitat, with areas of strong flow directed across them. Weekly water changes of around 30% help maintain the pristine water quality the species requires.

Conservation

Homalopterula modiglianii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List — a category that reflects the absence of sufficient population data to assign a threat level, not a confirmation of stability. For a small-range endemic confined to a single province of a single island, Data Deficient is a common and sobering status: it typically means the species has not been surveyed thoroughly enough to know whether it is declining.

The hill streams of Aceh Province face the pressures common to freshwater habitats across Sumatra: deforestation and associated sedimentation, agricultural run-off, and small-scale water abstraction. Rheophilic loaches that depend on clean, fast, rock-bed torrents are among the freshwater species most immediately affected by any deterioration in stream quality or flow. Homalopterula modiglianii is absent from the mainstream aquarium trade, so collecting pressure is not a current concern; the primary risks are habitat-driven. Given its restricted range, a formal population assessment would be valuable.
