Indoreonectes evezardi is a small stone loach endemic to the Western Ghats and Satpura range of peninsular India, a quiet, striped little fish of clear, fast-flowing, rocky streams that rarely reaches 1.5 in. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches, and lives the classic Nemacheilidae life: a bold benthic micro-predator picking invertebrates off rock and pebble in cool, oxygen-rich water, near-invisible thanks to a run of brown vertical bars down a pale, near-scaleless body. It is named for Colonel George C. Evezard of the Bombay Staff Corps, who procured the type specimen in the nineteenth century. Little has been published on its reproduction or precise husbandry requirements, and honesty about that gap matters more here than filling it with guesswork.

Taxonomy & naming

Indoreonectes evezardi was described by Francis Day in 1872, one of many freshwater fishes the British surgeon-naturalist catalogued from India during his tenure as Inspector-General of Fisheries. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest and most taxonomically unstable family of true loaches, repeatedly split and re-split as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken apart over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The genus Indoreonectes is one product of that reshuffling, erected to hold a small group of Western Ghats and Satpura endemics distinguished by details of fin-ray counts, lateral-line length and colour pattern from their nearest relatives.

The species epithet honours Colonel George C. Evezard (1826–1901) of the Bombay Staff Corps, who collected the type specimen that Day used for his original description. As with many older Indian nemacheilid names, older literature and some database records may still carry this species under a prior Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus combination; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current valid combination, and this article follows Indoreonectes evezardi throughout.

Morphology

This is a small, subcylindrical loach reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length, among the more modestly sized members of a family full of diminutive stream specialists. The body carries a well-developed nasal barbel and a short lateral line that ends above the midpoint of the pectoral fin — a detail used to separate it from close relatives. The dorsal fin has seven branched rays, and the caudal fin is rounded rather than deeply forked, typical of loaches that hold station against current rather than sprint through open water.

Colouration is the fish's most obvious field mark: a pale body crossed by nine to eighteen brown vertical stripes running down the flanks, giving strong camouflage against the dappled light and rock-and-pebble substrate of a fast Western Ghats stream. Like other true loaches it lacks the botiids' prominent erectile suborbital spine as a headline feature, but shares the family's near-scaleless skin — a trait that matters more for husbandry than for looks, since it leaves the fish sensitive to poor water quality and to strong medications.

Habitat

Indoreonectes evezardi is endemic to the Western Ghats and Satpura hill ranges of peninsular India, known from the Krishna river system — its type locality is the Mutha River, a Krishna tributary in Maharashtra — and associated drainages. It is a fish of fast-flowing, clear streams with rocky, pebbly and sandy substrates, the classic lotic hillstream habitat that Western Ghats endemics specialise in. One notable population is restricted to Kotumsar Cave, an unusual record for a nemacheilid and a reminder of how narrow and specific some of these stream ranges can be.

It shares its streams with other Western Ghats specialists — the loach Paracanthocobitis mooreh, the hillstream loach Schistura denisoni, the cyprinid Rasbora dandia and the danio Devario malabaricus — a community that only persists in clean, well-oxygenated, actively flowing water. This is not a still-water or blackwater fish; it is a current-adapted stream dweller, and any aquarium approximation needs to start from that fact rather than from a generic warm, calm tropical setup.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level around 2.9, consistent with an omnivorous micro-predator that forages over rock and gravel for small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other stream-bottom fauna — supplementing this with algae and organic detritus picked off the substrate. This matches the general Nemacheilidae pattern: a benthic hunter of fast, clear water rather than a specialised grazer or a surface feeder.

In the aquarium this translates into a fish that does best on small sinking foods — frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, sinking micro-pellets and wafers — offered at the bottom where it forages, rather than flake left to drift on the surface, which it is poorly equipped to exploit.

Mating

No published account of courtship or sexing for Indoreonectes evezardi was found. Reproductive behaviour has simply not been documented for this species, which is common among the smaller, single-drainage Nemacheilidae — a huge family in which detailed life-history studies exist for only a fraction of the described species. Any general Nemacheilidae comparison would point to seasonal spawning tied to the monsoon flow pulses typical of Western Ghats streams, but that should be read as a family-level generalisation, not a confirmed fact about this species.

Breeding

As with most stone and brook loaches, Indoreonectes evezardi is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the standard Nemacheilidae reproductive mode. It is not a cave-guarding species and does not mouthbrood; those strategies belong to other fish families entirely. Beyond that general pattern, however, the species-specific data is sparse: no aquarium spawning reports, incubation times or fecundity figures were located in the sources consulted.

In practice this is a species that is rarely, if ever, deliberately bred in home aquaria. Like the great majority of small-range Western Ghats stone loaches, it is kept — when kept at all — as a wild-collected biotope fish rather than a captive-bred one, and a keeper should not expect to spawn it.

In the aquarium

Indoreonectes evezardi is a small, undemanding-looking fish that nonetheless needs its stream habitat respected. Given its size (under 1.5 in) and its origin in fast, clear, rocky Western Ghats streams, it wants strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen and a substrate of smooth gravel, pebbles and sand rather than a soft, still, planted community setup. A powerhead or spray-bar aimed to create real current, along with rounded river stones for it to work around, comes closer to replicating its wild conditions than a standard calm aquarium layout.

Being near-scaleless, like other true loaches it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to full-strength treatments generally, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced dosing. It is a peaceful, gregarious bottom-dweller best kept in a small group rather than alone, alongside other current-loving stream fish of similar size. Because so little has been published on its specific care, keepers should treat general hillstream-loach guidelines as a starting point and watch the individual fish's condition closely rather than assume.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Indoreonectes evezardi as Least Concern. As a Western Ghats and Satpura endemic restricted to a defined set of river systems, it nonetheless depends on the health of those specific streams — the Western Ghats are a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot under mounting pressure from land-use change, water abstraction and pollution, even for species not yet flagged as threatened.

No information on trade volume or collection pressure for this species was found in the sources consulted; it appears to be a minor presence in the aquarium trade rather than a heavily exploited one. As with many small-range Indian stream endemics, the safest general statement is that its Least Concern status reflects current population stability rather than an absence of long-term risk, and that its ongoing well-being is tied to water quality across its home streams in Maharashtra and neighbouring ranges.
