Indoreonectes keralensis is a small, little-known stone loach endemic to a handful of fast-flowing rivers in Kerala's Western Ghats — the Periyar, Pampa, Muvattupuzha and Meenachil systems, all draining south of the Palghat gap. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the group that supplies most of the aquarium hobby's true "stone" or "brook" loaches, and it fits the family mould closely: a bold little benthic micro-predator built for cool, clear, oxygen-rich streams, restricted to a narrow home range, and essentially unknown in the aquarium trade. Hard data on this species is thin — much of what can be said comes from its genus and its close relatives rather than dedicated studies of I. keralensis itself, and that scarcity is itself part of the honest picture.

Taxonomy & naming

Indoreonectes keralensis was described in 1978 by S. Rita, Petru Bănărescu and Theodor Nalbant. It has also appeared in the literature and in databases under the combination Nemacheilus keralensis, reflecting the long history of nemacheiline loaches being shuffled between broad catch-all genera — Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus among them — before the group was split along better-supported lines. The genus Indoreonectes itself was erected for a set of hillstream-adapted loaches endemic to peninsular India south of the Satpura Range, and I. keralensis is treated as belonging there under the current arrangement; the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the valid combination.

The species sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone-loach family — by far the largest family of loaches, with many hundreds of species spread across Eurasia, most of them small, cryptically patterned, single-stream or single-basin endemics. A related and more recently described congener, Indoreonectes telanganaensis, was described from the Godavari basin and shares the same benthic build: a large eye, nasal barbels and barred body typical of the genus, which helps sketch the likely appearance of I. keralensis even where direct description is sparse.

Morphology

As a member of Nemacheilidae, Indoreonectes keralensis has the classic stone-loach build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and a small mouth surrounded by barbels used to feel out food in the substrate. Congeners in the genus show a relatively large eye, nasal barbels and dark barring or blotching along the flanks — a cryptic pattern well suited to a mottled gravel-and-cobble stream bottom — and I. keralensis can reasonably be expected to follow this pattern, though a dedicated morphological account specific to this species was not found in the sources consulted here.

Dedicated length data for I. keralensis is not available; closely related Indoreonectes species run roughly in the 2–3 in range, which is typical for the genus and the family as a whole, and is the best available guide until better data surfaces. Unlike the botiid loaches, Nemacheilidae do not carry a prominent erectile suborbital spine as a defining family trait, though many nemacheilines do have a small, less conspicuous spine near the eye; either way, the skin is thin and only lightly scaled, the same near-scaleless condition that runs through the loach group generally and makes these fish sensitive to harsh treatment and medication.

Habitat

Indoreonectes keralensis is a strict endemic of the Western Ghats in Kerala, southern India, known only from the Periyar, Pampa, Muvattupuzha and Meenachil river systems — all of them south of the Palghat gap, the biogeographic break that separates much of the peninsula's southern endemic fauna from populations further north. It lives in fast-flowing highland and foothill streams typical of the Western Ghats monsoon-forest belt: clear, cool, well-oxygenated water running over rock, gravel and cobble.

This is a cool-water, fast-flow specialist, not a warm still-water fish. Reported conditions for hillstream loaches of this type run around 64–75 °F with a pH near 7.0–7.8, and high dissolved oxygen and current are as important to this species as any single water-chemistry number — a torrent-adapted loach kept in warm, still water is being kept wrong from the start. Its restriction to a small number of river systems, and the general vulnerability of Western Ghats hillstreams to disturbance, are central to understanding both its biology and its conservation status.

Feeding

Indoreonectes keralensis is best understood as a benthic micro-predator, foraging over the streambed for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans — while also grazing biofilm and algae from stones, in keeping with the omnivorous, opportunistic feeding style typical of hillstream nemacheilines. This dual habit, part hunter and part grazer, is common across the family and reflects the food available on a fast-flowing rocky streambed rather than in open water.

In an aquarium setting modelled on its wild diet, small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, tubifex and similar — along with sinking foods that reach the bottom quickly would suit it best; a loach built for combing biofilm off stones and picking invertebrates from gravel is unlikely to key in on floating flake at the surface.

Mating

No dedicated account of courtship or spawning behaviour in Indoreonectes keralensis was found in the available sources, and this is not unusual — it is typical of small, single-basin Nemacheilidae endemics, most of which have never been observed spawning in the wild or in captivity. What can be said follows from the family: like other stone and brook loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scattering species with no pair-bonding or nest-building behaviour, spawning being triggered seasonally by the rise in flow and change in water conditions that comes with the monsoon, as is typical across Western Ghats stream fishes.

Given how little is documented, any more specific claim about this species' mating behaviour would be guesswork; the honest position is that its reproductive biology remains effectively unstudied.

Breeding

Indoreonectes keralensis has not been bred in the aquarium hobby as far as the available sources indicate, and this fits the pattern for stone and brook loaches generally: as a family, Nemacheilidae members are egg-scatterers over gravel and among stones in fast water, with no parental care, and captive spawnings are rare and poorly documented even for far more commonly kept congeners. There is no record of this species being propagated commercially or by hobbyists.

The honest summary is simple: breeding mode is egg-scattering with no parental care, inferred from the family and genus rather than direct observation of I. keralensis, and there is no evidence this species has ever been bred outside the wild. Anyone encountering it in the trade should assume any specimens offered are wild-collected, not captive-bred.

In the aquarium

Indoreonectes keralensis is not an established aquarium species — it does not appear to be traded with any regularity, and specific aquarium-keeping accounts for it were not found. What follows draws on its genus, family and habitat rather than on hobbyist experience with this fish specifically, and should be read with that caveat in mind.

A fast-flowing, cool, well-oxygenated setup would be essential: strong current, a rocky or gravel substrate, and stable, clean water rather than the warm, sluggish conditions many hillstream-adapted loaches are wrongly given. Like other loaches it is likely to be near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication, so any treatment should start conservative. As a benthic micro-predator and grazer, tank-mates should be other calm, cool-water-tolerant fish rather than boisterous tropical community species, and — following the general nemacheilid pattern — it is best assumed to do better in a small group than alone, though specific social-behaviour data for this exact species is not available.

Conservation

Indoreonectes keralensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated by Raghavan and Ali in 2011. Its restriction to a handful of river systems in Kerala's Western Ghats — the Periyar, Pampa, Muvattupuzha and Meenachil — makes it inherently vulnerable to localised pressures: habitat degradation, water abstraction, pollution and the broader disturbance that affects Western Ghats streams, a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot under heavy human pressure.

There is no evidence in the sources reviewed that the aquarium trade plays any meaningful role in this species' conservation picture — it does not appear to be a traded ornamental fish. Its risk instead comes from habitat-scale threats typical of small-range Western Ghats endemics, underscoring why so many stream fishes from this region carry threatened status despite facing no direct collection pressure.
