Taxonomy & naming
Lefua nikkonis was described by David Starr Jordan and Henry Weed Fowler in 1903. It belongs to the genus Lefua, a small group of stone loaches restricted to Japan, Korea, and parts of northeastern China and the Russian Far East, within the family Nemacheilidae — the largest and most diverse loach family, encompassing the small "stone" or "brook" loaches of clear Eurasian streams.
The genus Lefua has had a stable placement relative to some of its Nemacheilidae relatives, many of which have been repeatedly reshuffled between Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus, Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula as the family's taxonomy has been revised. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the standing authority for the valid name Lefua nikkonis; this account follows that combination and does not attempt to reassign the genus.
Morphology
This is a slender, elongate loach with a nearly circular body cross-section and no lateral line — typical of small benthic Nemacheilidae. FishBase records a maximum size of about 3 in total length, making it one of the smaller stone loaches. The mouth carries four pairs of barbels (three pairs around the upper jaw plus a pair at the anterior nostrils), used to feel out food on and under the substrate in low-visibility, fast-flowing water.
Males develop a dark longitudinal band along the body, a feature used to distinguish the sexes visually. The dorsal fin carries 7–8 soft rays and the anal fin 5–6, with no hard spines in either — consistent with an unarmoured, near-scaleless stream loach built for holding position against current rather than for defence or display.
Habitat
Lefua nikkonis is endemic to Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands, with phylogeographic work identifying genetic structure across the Ishikari Lowland and the Tsugaru Strait region. It is a primary freshwater species, meaning it has essentially no salinity tolerance and depends entirely on connected freshwater stream systems.
FishBase reports a temperature range of 59–77 °F and water chemistry around pH 6.8–7.5 with moderate hardness (dH 8–18) — a cool, clean, well-oxygenated stream profile, not a warm, still, or blackwater one. Its barbels do the work of locating prey by touch in fast, often turbid flow, rather than relying on sight alone.
Specific dietary data for this species is sparse in the available literature, but its close relatives and its body plan point to a diet of aquatic insect larvae and small crustaceans picked from the streambed. In an aquarium setting this profile suggests it would take small sinking live, frozen, or prepared foods readily, and might largely ignore food that stays at the surface.

A related population from the Kako River on Honshu (a closely allied population studied alongside L. nikkonis) shows a wild breeding season running from May to July, with female-biased sexual size dimorphism — mature females growing larger than males. Whether this timing and pattern holds precisely for the Hokkaido population of L. nikkonis specifically is not confirmed in the sources available here.
Males are distinguishable by the dark longitudinal band on the body, which likely plays a role in signalling during the breeding season, though no detailed courtship account for this species was found. Data on this species' reproductive behaviour in the wild remains genuinely sparse.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), Lefua nikkonis is essentially undocumented in aquarium breeding. Like other Nemacheilidae it is a small, unarmoured, essentially scaleless-skinned fish, and stone loaches as a group are considered sensitive to medications and prone to stress in poor water quality; standard loach caution around gentle dosing and pristine water applies.
