Lefua pleskei was described by the Russian ichthyologist Solomon Herzenstein in 1888. The parentheses around the authority mark a change of genus since the original description, a routine event in this family: the loaches now placed in Nemacheilidae have been repeatedly reshuffled among Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus and a growing list of segregate genera as the group's taxonomy has been revised.
