Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by A. G. K. Menon in 1992, originally as Lepidocephalus coromandelensis before that genus was folded into the broader revision of the group; the Catalog of Fishes lists the current, valid combination as Lepidocephalichthys coromandelensis. It sits in the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, within the genus Lepidocephalichthys — a group of small South and Southeast Asian loaches distinguished from the superficially similar Pangio (the kuhli loaches) by a more robust body and a forked, rather than rounded, caudal fin.
A 2023 taxonomic revision published in Hydrobiologia (Britz et al.), covering Lepidocephalichthys across Sri Lanka and peninsular India, reaffirmed L. coromandelensis as a valid, distinct species and noted that the genus in this region has undergone multiple separate colonization events, producing more species diversity than earlier accounts recognized. The same paper flags that further taxonomic work remains needed for some Indian members of the genus, so the picture around its close relatives is still being refined.
Morphology
Like every member of Cobitidae, Lepidocephalichthys coromandelensis carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile suborbital spine, folded away in a groove below the eye and flicked out when the fish is threatened or handled. Its skin is effectively scaleless to the touch, with the tiny embedded scales typical of the genus offering little of the protection a heavier-scaled fish has — a point that matters for disease resistance and medication tolerance.
Exact size data for this species has not been documented in the sources available, but its close congeners give a reliable range: Lepidocephalichthys thermalis, a similarly sized peninsular Indian relative, reaches roughly 2 in SL, and the wider genus runs small, generally well under 4 in. L. coromandelensis is best assumed to fall in that same modest size class — a slim, elongate, bottom-hugging loach built for burrowing rather than open swimming.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, India, with its type locality in the Araku Valley. It occupies flowing streams with sandy substrate in the hill drainages of the Eastern Ghats — waters that expand seasonally with the monsoon and contract in the dry season, a rhythm that shapes the life cycle of many South Asian stream loaches.
This is a warm-water, tropical species, not one of the coldwater spined loaches found further north and west across Eurasia. Congener data from L. thermalis — drawn from clear, flowing peninsular Indian streams with rocky-to-sandy substrate — points to a similar tropical temperature range of roughly 68–77 °F for the genus in this region, well above what a temperate Cobitis or a dojo loach would tolerate as a baseline.
Feeding
As a member of a sand-sifting genus, Lepidocephalichthys coromandelensis is best understood as a benthic omnivore that forages by working through soft substrate, taking insect larvae, small crustaceans and detritus along with whatever else the sand yields. This sifting behaviour is well documented across Lepidocephalichthys and the wider Cobitidae, and it depends on a soft, fine substrate — a fish kept over gravel or coarse sand cannot feed the way it would in the wild.
No species-specific dietary study is available in the sources reviewed, so this account leans on genus-level behaviour. In captivity, related Lepidocephalichthys species accept sinking foods readily, including bloodworm and Daphnia, and a soft-sand-based, varied diet is the reasonable default for this species as well.

Breeding
There is no confirmed record of Lepidocephalichthys coromandelensis being bred in the aquarium. This fits the broader pattern in Cobitidae: the temperate spined and pond loaches — Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and especially the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, scattering adhesive eggs among plants, typically in spring. The tropical members of the family, including the horseface loach Acantopsis and the genus Lepidocephalichthys, generally have not, and this species is no exception.
Where Cobitidae breeding has been observed, it follows an egg-scattering pattern with no parental care: eggs are released among vegetation or in flowing water and left to develop unattended. That is the mode to assume here, though it remains unconfirmed for this particular species — the honest position is that captive breeding of L. coromandelensis has not been documented.
In the aquarium
Lepidocephalichthys coromandelensis is not an established aquarium fish, and aquarium-specific care data for it does not exist in the sources reviewed. What can be said comes from its genus and family: it would need a soft, sandy substrate to sift and burrow in, warm tropical water in the range suggested by its congener L. thermalis (around 68–77 °F), and good filtration with clean, flowing conditions reflecting its native hill-stream habitat.
Being near-scaleless, it should be treated with the same caution given to other Cobitidae — sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, and best dosed conservatively if disease treatment is ever needed. As a narrow-range endemic restricted to the Eastern Ghats drainages of Andhra Pradesh, its status nonetheless depends on the health of a specific set of hill streams rather than a broad, resilient range — the kind of profile that can shift quickly if local habitat pressures increase.
