Taxonomy & naming
Lepidocephalichthys eleios was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2017 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, based on a holotype of 1 in standard length collected from the Lake Indawgyi basin. It belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true, spined loaches — within the genus Lepidocephalichthys, a group of small South and Southeast Asian loaches distinguished from related genera partly by details of the pectoral-fin rays in males; in L. eleios the last two rays sit adjacent without a connecting membrane, rather than being fused as in some congeners, one of the characters Kottelat used to separate it from its relatives.
The species epithet eleios derives from Greek, meaning "of the marsh" or "dwelling in the marsh," a direct reference to the shallow, vegetated lake-margin habitat where it was found. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the name as valid, and no synonymy or later revision has altered the combination since the original description.
Morphology
This is an exceptionally small loach: the holotype measured 1 in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum around 1 in SL, making L. eleios one of the smallest described members of Cobitidae. Like other true loaches it carries the family's diagnostic erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive spine folded into a groove beneath the eye, and its skin is effectively naked — the tiny, deeply embedded scales typical of the family offer little protection and make the fish sensitive to harsh treatment.
Colour pattern includes a series of mid-lateral spots and saddle-like markings along the back, consistent with the cryptic, mottled patterning typical of small Lepidocephalichthys species that live tucked into vegetation and leaf litter rather than out on open substrate. The original description notes 10 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays; males are distinguished from females chiefly by the arrangement of the pectoral-fin rays described above rather than by any obvious external colour difference.
Habitat
Lepidocephalichthys eleios is known only from the Lake Indawgyi basin, part of the upper Irrawaddy drainage in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — Myanmar's largest inland lake. In Kottelat's survey the species turned up at only 3 of 12 sampled sites, always in shallow, marshy, lake-margin habitat: dense vegetation, mud, and accumulated vegetal debris and leaf litter rather than open water or clean sand.
This is a tropical, not temperate, species — the marsh water of the Indawgyi basin is warm year-round, unlike the cold-tolerant Cobitis, Sabanejewia and Misgurnus species found much further north and west across Eurasia. Notably, FishBase records the species as a facultative air-breather, an adaptation that suits the slow-moving, vegetation-choked, potentially oxygen-poor marsh water it inhabits — it can supplement gill respiration by gulping air at the surface when dissolved oxygen runs low.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been published for L. eleios, but its biology is consistent with the benthic omnivory typical of small Cobitidae: sifting through soft mud, vegetal debris and leaf litter for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, supplemented with detritus. Its marsh habitat — thick with organic material rather than clean sand — points to a fish that forages by picking through cover rather than sifting an open sandbed the way larger sand-dwelling loaches do.
In the absence of aquarium accounts, feeding recommendations must be inferred from the genus and family: small sinking foods sized to a fish barely over two centimetres, offered where it can forage among cover rather than in open water.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in L. eleios. No sexual dimorphism in colour or body shape is documented beyond the pectoral-fin ray character used taxonomically to separate males of this genus from related species; whether that character is visible enough to sex live fish in practice is not established in the literature available.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for this species in either the wild or the aquarium. As a member of Cobitidae, L. eleios is presumed — by analogy with better-known relatives in the family — to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, most likely depositing adhesive eggs among vegetation as many spined and pond loaches do. But this is inference from the family, not an observed spawning event for the species itself.
The temperate members of Cobitidae — Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have on occasion been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, typically triggered by a spring temperature rise. L. eleios, however, is a tropical marsh species from a single lake basin with no aquarium-trade presence and no record of captive spawning, so the honest statement is that its breeding is simply unknown.
In the aquarium
Lepidocephalichthys eleios is not established in the aquarium hobby — it has no common trade name, and there is no body of keeper experience to draw on. Given its extremely small adult size and marsh origins, any aquarium approach would need to depart from standard sand-sifting loach care: rather than an open sandbed, a tank replicating dense planting, leaf litter and soft mud would suit the fish's natural microhabitat far better, alongside gentle, warm, tropical water.
As with all Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin means sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications should be assumed even without species-specific data — half-doses and gentle treatment are the safer default for any true loach. Its tiny size also means it should never be kept with fish large enough to see it as food, and any substrate or décor needs to be fine and soft enough not to abrade a fish this small.
Conservation
Lepidocephalichthys eleios has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category applies — it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. It is known only from the Lake Indawgyi basin, where it was found at a minority of surveyed sites within shallow marginal marsh habitat, suggesting a naturally restricted and patchy distribution even within its single home lake.
Lake Indawgyi is a Ramsar wetland of international importance and an Association of Southeast Asian Nations Heritage Park, which affords the basin some formal recognition, but the species' apparent narrow habitat association with intact marsh vegetation means it could be vulnerable to shoreline development, drainage or vegetation loss around the lake margins. With no population data or trend information published, and no presence in the aquarium trade, its status is best described as data-poor rather than assessed.
