Lepidocephalichthys hasselti is a small, tropical member of the Cobitidae — the true spined and pond loaches — burrowing through the soft sand and mud of slow, warm Southeast Asian waterways from Myanmar to Borneo. It is a modest, mottled little fish that spends its days half-buried, sifting the substrate for anything edible, and its true colours only show once a keeper gives it the loose, soft floor it needs to act like itself. Despite a wide native range across the mainland and the Sunda Shelf, it is only rarely seen in the aquarium trade. Like its relatives it carries the erectile suborbital spine that names the family and near-scaleless skin that makes it sensitive to strong medication — and, as with most of this family, no one has documented it breeding in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the French naturalist Achille Valenciennes in 1846, originally as Cobitis hasselti — hence the parentheses around his name, signalling it has since been moved to another genus. It picked up several synonyms along the way, including Cobitis octocirrhus, Lepidocephalus hasselti and Lepidocephalus taeniatus, before the genus Lepidocephalichthys was erected specifically to hold it and its relatives, separating them from the similarly named Lepidocephalus. Lepidocephalichthys hasselti is the type species of the genus.

It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, distinct from the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra) that dominate the aquarium trade. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current combination, Lepidocephalichthys hasselti; older literature and some trade listings may still show one of the historical Cobitis or Lepidocephalus combinations, but these are outdated synonyms rather than valid alternatives.

Morphology

This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach with a pointed snout and the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye, which the fish can flick out when handled or threatened. Its skin carries tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave it functionally near-naked — a trait shared across Cobitidae and one with real consequences for how the fish should be medicated.

Adults reach only a modest size, with sources citing a standard length around 2 in and a total length up to roughly 3 in, making this one of the smaller loaches likely to be kept. Coloration is a subdued, mottled brown-and-cream camouflage pattern suited to a life spent buried in sand, with barbels around the mouth used to feel out food in the substrate. This is a tropical species, not one of the temperate, coldwater Cobitidae such as Cobitis or the dojo loach Misgurnus — it wants warm water year-round.

Habitat

Lepidocephalichthys hasselti is native to mainland and island Southeast Asia, with records spanning Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam on the mainland, Peninsular Malaysia, and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Across this range it turns up in slow-moving streams, swamps, oxbow lakes, backwaters and flooded paddy fields, as well as inundated floodplain channels — still or gently flowing water over soft, muddy or sandy bottoms rather than fast hillstream torrents.

It is a warm-water, lowland species. In the aquarium this translates to a tropical tank rather than an unheated one, with soft, gently acidic to neutral water and, critically, a fine, soft substrate the fish can bury into — sand rather than gravel. A modest footprint suits it; a tank from around 60 x 12 in upward is enough for a small group.

Feeding

In the wild this is a sand-sifting micropredator, working through the soft bottom for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic prey — along with some detritus picked up in the process. Its barbels and burrowing habit are built for exactly this kind of blind foraging through mud and sand rather than open-water hunting.

In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets and flake readily once settled, along with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp (Artemia) and daphnia, and will pick over some algae and other plant matter opportunistically. As with most burrowing loaches, food needs to reach the bottom — a fish that spends much of the day under the sand will not compete well for food left floating at the surface.

Mating

No reliable account of courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for this species in the aquarium. Seriously Fish and Loaches Online both report that captive breeding has not been recorded, and no external sexual dimorphism beyond the general pattern of females running plumper when gravid — typical across small loaches — appears to have been described specifically for Lepidocephalichthys hasselti.

Given its close relatives among the tropical Cobitidae and its wide but seasonal wild habitat (streams, swamps and paddies that flood with the monsoon), spawning is presumed to follow a seasonal pattern tied to rains and rising water, in keeping with the broader pattern in the family — but this remains an inference from related species rather than a documented observation for this fish.

Breeding

Lepidocephalichthys hasselti has not been bred in captivity as far as the record shows. Both major hobbyist references consulted here state plainly that no captive spawning has been documented, and this fits the wider pattern in Cobitidae: the temperate spined loaches (Cobitis, Sabanejewia) and the dojo or weather loach (Misgurnus) have occasionally been pond- or tank-spawned, but the tropical genera — including Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys — generally have not.

When it does spawn, the presumed mode (inferred from the family, not observed directly in this species) is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: adhesive eggs released among plants or vegetation, with adults taking no further role. There is no cave-guarding, no mouthbrooding and no active nest-building in this genus. For now, any Lepidocephalichthys hasselti in the trade should be assumed wild-collected rather than captive-bred, though its low export volume means most keepers will never encounter the question.

In the aquarium

This is a peaceful, undemanding little loach best suited to a species-appropriate community tank with soft-bodied tankmates it cannot outcompete and nothing large enough to see it as food. It should be kept in a group — sources suggest three to four or more — since like most loaches it is more confident and visible in numbers rather than alone.

The single most important care point is substrate: this is an active burrower that spends much of its time under a soft, sand or fine-grain bottom, and coarse gravel will not let it express that natural behaviour or may even injure it. Give it soft acidic-to-neutral water in the low-to-mid 20s °C, plenty of cover, and dim lighting, and it will settle in well despite being shy at first. As with all Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments — dose cautiously and watch for early signs of ich, to which scaleless loaches are notably prone. It is rarely seen in the trade despite its broad native range, so availability rather than difficulty is the main obstacle to keeping it.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Lepidocephalichthys hasselti as Least Concern in 2013, reflecting its wide distribution across mainland Southeast Asia and the Sunda Shelf islands and the absence of any known widespread population decline.

Its broad range spanning multiple countries and habitat types — streams, swamps, floodplains and even rice paddies — gives it more resilience than many narrow stream endemics in this family, though as with other lowland Southeast Asian wetland species it likely faces localized pressure from agricultural conversion and wetland drainage across parts of its range. It is not a significant feature of the ornamental trade, so aquarium collection is not considered a meaningful pressure on wild populations.
