Taxonomy & naming
Jonklaas's loach was described by the Sri Lankan zoologist Paulus E. P. Deraniyagala in 1956. It sits in Lepidocephalichthys, a genus of small, sand-dwelling loaches within the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches, named for the erectile suborbital spine shared across the family. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority followed here for valid names, retains the species in Lepidocephalichthys jonklaasi with no synonymy in wide use.
The species epithet honours Rodney Jonklaas (1925–1989), the pioneering Sri Lankan diver, naturalist and underwater photographer whose fieldwork brought many of the island's freshwater fishes to scientific attention. It is one of a small number of Lepidocephalichthys species endemic to Sri Lanka, distinct from the more widespread South and Southeast Asian members of the genus.
Morphology
This is a small, slender loach — FishBase gives a maximum length of about 2.5 in total length, making it one of the smaller Cobitidae in the hobby-adjacent literature even though it is not actually traded. As in other Lepidocephalichthys and their Cobitidae relatives, an erectile spine sits in a groove beneath each eye; Seriously Fish describes it as sharp and motile enough to entangle in soft nets, so any handling is best done with a container rather than a mesh net.
The skin carries small, deeply embedded scales typical of the family, which is functionally near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to medication and to water quality. Colouration and cryptic habits go together here: the species is described as hiding in leaf debris and shaded cover, consistent with a fish that relies on camouflage in dim, tannin-stained rainforest water rather than on open swimming.
Habitat
Lepidocephalichthys jonklaasi is a tropical species, endemic to the wet-zone rainforest of southern Sri Lanka. FishBase records the type locality as Wilpita, Akuressa, with further records from the Kalu River basin (Madakada) and the Kanneliya Reserve within the Gin River basin — a tight cluster of streams in one of the island's last significant rainforest blocks.
It lives in shallow, slow-flowing rivulets that are heavily shaded by rainforest canopy and carry a heavy load of leaf litter and detritus on the bottom. These are soft, dim, structurally complex little streams rather than open sandy rivers, and the species is described as facultatively air-breathing — a trait that suits the low-oxygen conditions of shaded, leaf-choked, slow-moving water.
Feeding
FishBase places Jonklaas's loach at a trophic level of about 2.8, consistent with an invertebrate micropredator rather than a generalist scavenger. Seriously Fish describes the feeding mode as sifting the substrate and picking through gill-rakers for small organisms, in keeping with the sand-sifting, soft-substrate feeding style typical of Cobitidae.
In practice this means small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm — plus sinking pellets small enough for its modest mouth, taken over or within a soft bed rather than from open water. A soft substrate to root and sift through is not a cosmetic preference but part of how this species naturally forages.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for this species in the wild or captivity; FishBase notes reproduction as insufficiently known, and Seriously Fish records breeding as unrecorded. There is no described sexual dimorphism to guide sexing, and given how rarely the species is even seen outside targeted surveys of its native streams, that gap is unsurprising.
As a tropical Cobitidae from Sri Lanka's wet zone, it would be expected — by analogy with better-studied relatives in the family — to scatter adhesive eggs among cover after seasonal rains, but this has not actually been observed or recorded for Lepidocephalichthys jonklaasi, and no aquarium spawning has ever been reported.
Breeding
Jonklaas's loach has not been bred in the aquarium, and there is no field record of its spawning behaviour either — both of the sources checked here explicitly flag reproduction as unknown or unrecorded. This fits the wider pattern in Cobitidae: while temperate members of the family such as Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo (weather loach, Misgurnus) have been pond- or tank-spawned in cooler climates, the tropical genera — Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys among them — generally have not, and this species has effectively no breeding history at all to draw on.
What can be said follows the family's general mode: an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, most likely triggered by seasonal rains in its native rivulets, as inferred from related Cobitidae rather than direct observation. Anyone hoping to spawn it would be starting from nothing but that inference — this is an honestly unbred fish.
In the aquarium
This species is essentially absent from the aquarium trade — Seriously Fish notes it plainly as absent from commerce — so most guidance here is extrapolated from its documented wild requirements rather than from keeper experience. Were it obtainable, it would need warm, soft, acidic-to-neutral water (roughly 68–77 °F, pH 5.5–7.5), dim lighting, dense cover such as leaf litter and driftwood, minimal water flow, and — critically — a soft sand substrate it can bury completely into, mirroring the shaded, leaf-choked rivulets it comes from.
As with all Cobitidae, expect it to be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications given its near-scaleless skin, so any treatment should start at reduced dose. Seriously Fish suggests keeping any specimens in a group of four or more, consistent with the peaceful, conspecific-tolerant behaviour reported for the genus, and cautions that a burrowing micropredator this size may pick off very small fry sharing its tank. In practice, though, the responsible position is that this is a wild, range-restricted, currently untraded species rather than a stocking recommendation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Lepidocephalichthys jonklaasi as Endangered (EN) on 7 August 2019, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) — a restricted range combined with continuing decline in habitat extent and quality. It is a narrow-range endemic, known only from a handful of wet-zone rainforest streams in southern Sri Lanka, and the assessment notes it has already disappeared from some sites where it was previously recorded.
Habitat destruction and fragmentation of Sri Lanka's shrinking wet-zone rainforest are the stated drivers of decline. Because the species is not part of the aquarium trade, collection pressure is not a factor here — the threat is squarely the loss of the shaded, leaf-littered rivulets it depends on, making this a habitat-conservation story rather than a trade-conservation one.
