Taxonomy & naming
Lepidocephalichthys manipurensis was described by S. Arunkumar in 2000, its species epithet a direct reference to Manipur, the northeastern Indian state that anchors its known range. It sits in the genus Lepidocephalichthys, a group of small, scale-headed loaches within the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches, named for the erectile spine tucked beneath the eye that this species shares with its relatives.
The genus itself has a tangled history in the literature: older regional accounts sometimes folded members of Lepidocephalichthys into the closely related genus Lepidocephalus or cited them under outdated combinations, and identification within the group still leans on subtle differences in barbel count, colour pattern and head scalation. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and it is retained here as Lepidocephalichthys manipurensis with no indication of a more recent revision affecting this species.
Morphology
This is a slender, elongated loach with the characteristic near-scaleless feel of a true Cobitidae species, though FishBase notes it lacks scales specifically on the vertex, or crown, of the head — a detail used in distinguishing it from close relatives. The body carries a dark stripe running from the snout through the eye, a series of spots along the mid-line of the flank, and bars across the dorsal surface, giving it a mottled, cryptic pattern well suited to a sandy or gravelly streambed. The caudal fin is forked, typical of the more active swimmers in this genus.
As in all cobitids, an erectile spine sits in a groove below the eye and can be flicked out in defence or when the fish is handled — a feature to respect when netting or transporting it. FishBase records a maximum length around 2–2.5 in total length for the genus's typical scale, though exact figures for this particular species are not detailed in the available literature; it is a small loach by any measure, well short of the 12 in bulk of a botiid like the clown loach.
Habitat
Lepidocephalichthys manipurensis is a narrow-range endemic, known only from Manipur in northeastern India and from the town of Moreh in Myanmar's Chandel district, just across the international border. This is hill country on the India–Myanmar frontier, drained by small to moderate streams and rivers rather than the great lowland rivers of the Indo-Gangetic plain, and FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic freshwater, meaning it lives and forages near the bottom while still moving up into the water column.
This is a tropical species, not one of the coldwater Cobitidae — unlike the Eurasian spined loaches of the genus Cobitis or the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus that tolerate cool or even unheated water further north, Lepidocephalichthys is a warm-water genus through and through, and this species' restricted range sits well within the tropical belt of South and Southeast Asia.
Feeding
As a sand-sifting benthic loach, Lepidocephalichthys manipurensis almost certainly feeds the way its close relatives do: working through soft sediment for small invertebrates such as worms, insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, along with whatever detritus and organic matter turns up in the substrate. A related aquarium species in the same genus, L. guntea, is documented taking sinking dried foods as well as small live and frozen fare like Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm once established in captivity, and there is no reason to expect this species' natural diet or feeding style to differ meaningfully.
The critical point for feeding any Lepidocephalichthys is the substrate: these are fish that root and sift rather than pick food from open gravel, so a genuinely soft, fine bed is what lets natural foraging behaviour happen at all.
Mating
No documented account of courtship or spawning behaviour in Lepidocephalichthys manipurensis specifically has turned up in the available sources. In the related species L. thermalis, captive breeding work has shown a rainy-season trigger — a period of cooler, softer water following a simulated dry spell — bringing fish into spawning condition, with pairs then scattering eggs over gravel and among plants. Whether this species follows the same seasonal pattern in its home streams on the India–Myanmar border is not established in the literature reviewed here, and it would be guessing to assume the details transfer directly.
Breeding
Lepidocephalichthys manipurensis has, as far as the available sources show, no documented breeding history in the aquarium. As a tropical member of the Cobitidae, it fits the honest pattern for this side of the family: the temperate spined loaches — Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — are the ones with a track record of pond- or tank-spawning, while the tropical genera, including Lepidocephalichthys and the horseface loach Acantopsis, generally have not been bred at home. Where breeding has been achieved in the genus, as with the related L. thermalis under controlled captive conditions, it follows the standard cobitid pattern: an egg-scattering spawn over gravel or plants with no parental care afterward, egg incubation running under a day in warm water.
There is no evidence this species is bred commercially or by hobbyists at any scale, and any aquarium stock in circulation should be assumed wild-collected rather than farm- or tank-produced.
In the aquarium
This is not an established aquarium fish, and a keeper is unlikely to encounter it outside specialist or regional trade. Its close relative L. guntea gives a reasonable proxy for care requirements within the genus: a tank with a genuinely soft sand substrate for natural sifting behaviour, water in the region of 68–77 °F (with the wild range for the genus spanning roughly 61–86 °F), and company — these are social fish best kept in a group of four or more rather than alone.
As with every true loach in this family, the near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Given its tropical, restricted-range habitat on the India–Myanmar frontier, stable warm water and a settled, undisturbed sand-floored setup are the sensible baseline for any specimen that does turn up in the trade.
Conservation
Lepidocephalichthys manipurensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2020.2 assessment). This is a fish with a genuinely narrow known range — restricted to Manipur, India, and the adjoining Moreh area of Myanmar's Chandel district — and restricted-range endemics of this kind can be vulnerable to localised pressures even when the current formal assessment reads as low concern.
No specific threats or population trend are detailed in the sources reviewed here, and the species does not appear to be a significant part of the ornamental trade, so aquarium collection does not register as a pressure on it. As with many small stream endemics of northeastern India and the adjoining hills of Myanmar, habitat integrity in its limited native streams is the factor most likely to matter for its long-term status.
