Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1846 as Cobitis thermalis, one of many loaches originally lumped into the old catch-all genus Cobitis before the family was untangled. It was later placed in Lepidocephalus, an intermediate combination that still turns up in older literature, before settling in its current genus, Lepidocephalichthys — the Catalog of Fishes lists Lepidocephalichthys thermalis as the valid combination, and this article keeps that name throughout.
The genus Lepidocephalichthys sits within the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, alongside Cobitis, Sabanejewia, Acantopsis and the dojo genus Misgurnus. The specific epithet thermalis is Latin for "of hot springs," a direct reference to the type locality — the geothermal Kanniya springs near Trincomalee, Sri Lanka — rather than a description of the species' everyday habitat, which is ordinary warm tropical fresh water, not thermal water.
Morphology
Lepidocephalichthys thermalis is a small, slender loach, reported to reach up to around 15 in SL in some regional accounts, though hobby sources describe adults closer to 2 in SL, which is far more consistent with what keepers actually see in the tank and trade — the larger figure likely reflects a data error or an unusually large regional record, so a modest few centimetres is the safe expectation. The body is elongate and rounded in cross-section, patterned with a broken series of dark blotches or a mottled band along the flanks over a pale sandy-brown ground colour, giving it useful camouflage over a sandy riverbed.
As a member of Cobitidae it carries the family's diagnostic erectile suborbital spine, a small hooked spine folded into a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out defensively — a detail worth remembering when netting the fish, since the spine can snag fine mesh. Its scales are minute and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked and, as in other loaches, sensitive to medication and copper. Long, sensory barbels around the mouth help it feel out food in sand and low light.
Habitat
This is a South Asian species, native to Peninsular India and Sri Lanka, recorded from river systems including the Godavari, Krishna, Palar, Kaveri and Periyar in India, and widely across Sri Lanka, where its type locality is the geothermal Kanniya hot springs near Trincomalee. Despite that unusual type locality, the species is not a hot-spring specialist — it lives broadly across flowing streams and rivers with sandy or rocky substrate and good oxygenation.
Water is warm and tropical, generally slightly acidic to neutral, with reported temperatures around 68–77 °F in the wild and pH from about 6.0 to 8.0 depending on the site. This is firmly a tropical Cobitidae, unlike the temperate spined loaches of Europe and the Caucasus (Cobitis, Sabanejewia) or the coldwater dojo loach Misgurnus — Lepidocephalichthys thermalis wants a heated tropical tank, not an unheated pond.
Feeding
In the wild, Lepidocephalichthys thermalis is a benthic micropredator and forager, sifting sand and combing the substrate for insect larvae and other small invertebrates, and also taking detritus and algae. Its barbels and sensitive snout let it locate food buried in the substrate, and like other members of its family it does much of its foraging low down and out of sight, especially by day, becoming more active at dusk and after dark.
In the aquarium it is an easy and unfussy eater, readily taking sinking pellets and wafers along with live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Artemia and Daphnia. A soft sand substrate lets it forage naturally, which both keeps it active and reduces the risk of damage to its sensitive barbels and skin that a coarse or sharp substrate can cause.
Mating
Reliable external sexing is not well documented for this species in the sources available here, and courtship has only occasionally been observed by hobbyists, without confirmed home spawning under ordinary tank conditions. What is documented comes from a captive-breeding study under controlled research conditions, which found that spawning could be induced but needed water noticeably warmer than the species' everyday comfort range — around 84–85 °F — together with a pH shifted toward 7.0–8.5, well outside what most keepers would run day to day.
That gap between everyday care conditions and the specific trigger needed for spawning is the practical story here: this is a fish that lives comfortably at 68–77 °F but that, per the available research, only reproduces when pushed warmer and given the right chemistry, which is why verified spawnings remain very uncommon outside dedicated breeding setups.
Breeding
Lepidocephalichthys thermalis is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, the standard reproductive mode for Cobitidae: ripe adults release adhesive eggs over gravel or among plants, and the eggs are left to develop unguarded. This is consistent with the wider pattern in the family — the temperate spined and pond loaches (Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus) are the ones most often pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, while tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis and this species are only rarely bred outside controlled research settings.
A single captive-breeding study (documented under research conditions in India) reported successful induced spawning at an elevated temperature of around 84–85 °F, with eggs incubating in roughly 20–30 hours, over a gravel bed with or without plants as spawning substrate. That result shows breeding is possible, but it required deliberate conditioning outside the species' normal husbandry range — for the ordinary home aquarist, this remains a species that is essentially not bred by accident, and success should be treated as a genuine achievement rather than an expectation.
In the aquarium
Lepidocephalichthys thermalis suits a modest, well-established tropical community tank rather than a large showpiece setup, given its small adult size. A soft sand substrate is close to essential — this is a sand-sifting, burrowing loach, and a sharp or coarse substrate will damage its barbels and belly over time. Provide gentle to moderate flow, good oxygenation, and some cover in the form of plants, wood or leaf litter, since it forages mostly low in the water column and appreciates shaded retreats during the day.
As with other Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many general treatments, so half-doses and gentle products are the safer default, and it should be watched closely for early signs of ich, to which scaleless loaches are often the first fish in a tank to succumb. Keep several individuals together where possible — small loaches of this kind generally do better in a modest group than singly — and maintain stable, warm tropical water in the 68–77 °F range documented for the species, rather than treating it as a coldwater or hot-spring fish.
Conservation
Lepidocephalichthys thermalis is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 29 July 2019. It is a widespread species across river systems in Peninsular India and Sri Lanka, which supports a Least Concern listing rather than any elevated threat category.
As with many small, widely distributed South Asian stream fishes, the main long-term pressures are likely to be habitat-related — water quality, flow modification and land-use change across its river systems — rather than any documented trade-driven decline. The species does appear in the aquarium trade, largely as wild-collected stock rather than farmed fish, but there is no evidence in the sources reviewed here of collection pressure threatening the species at a population level.
