Leptobotia flavolineata is a compact botiid loach from the rivers of northern China, distinguished by fourteen dark brown vertical bands encircling a pale body, each band bordered by the thin yellowish lines that give the species its name. One of only two Leptobotia recorded from northern China, it is a cool-water fish of clean, well-oxygenated rivers and has seen little coverage in the English-language hobby. Like all botiids it carries an erectile suborbital spine, is near-scaleless and med-sensitive, and is essentially never bred in home aquaria.

Taxonomy & naming

Leptobotia flavolineata was described by Wang in 1981 from the Juma River at Shidu, Fangshan County, in Beijing — making it one of the few botiid loaches with a type locality inside China's northern capital region. It belongs to the family Botiidae and the subfamily Leptobotiinae, a lineage of Chinese and Southeast Asian river loaches with a simple (un-bifurcated) suborbital spine, which distinguishes Leptobotia from other botiid genera.

The genus Leptobotia was erected by Bleeker in 1870, with Leptobotia elongata as the type species. Within Leptobotia, L. flavolineata is one of only two species confirmed from northern China — the other being L. orientalis — setting it apart from the more southerly Yangtze- and Pearl-basin species in the genus. No subspecies or synonyms are currently listed in the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

L. flavolineata is a small, elongate loach reaching about 3.5 in standard length. The body is pale with fourteen dark brown vertical bands that encircle the body completely; thin yellowish lines separate each band from its neighbours, a feature commemorated in the specific epithet. The head is pointed and the snout slightly downturned, suited to foraging over riverbed substrates.

Like all botiids, it carries an erectile spine in a groove below each eye — the suborbital spine that is the family's calling card. These spines flick outward defensively, making the fish difficult to net safely and capable of nicking a careless hand; a container is the proper way to transfer botiids. The body is covered in deeply embedded, minute scales that leave the skin feeling effectively naked — a trait that makes the species, like its relatives, sensitive to dissolved copper and full-strength medications.

Habitat

The type locality is the Juma River at Shidu in Beijing's Fangshan County, a river of the North China Plain that drains into the Hai River basin. This is a temperate, inland river system far north of the subtropical Yangtze and Pearl basins that host most Leptobotia species — placing L. flavolineata firmly in cool-to-cold-temperate freshwater habitat. The Juma River runs over gravel and rocky substrates with moderate current, clear water and well-oxygenated conditions typical of northern Chinese foothill rivers.

The species is a strictly freshwater, demersal fish. It is not a brackish or tropical animal: northern China's upland rivers are cool for much of the year, and the species is sensitive to elevated temperatures and to oxygen depletion. In the aquarium it wants cool, clean, well-aerated water with moderate flow — conditions closer to a hillstream biotope than a warm Southeast-Asian loach setup.

Feeding

Botiids in the elongata-group, which includes the close relative L. elongata, are documented to feed on benthic invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, gammarids, worms, small molluscs and crustaceans — along with phytodetritus and some plankton. L. flavolineata, as a small botiid foraging over a northern Chinese riverbed, almost certainly shares this omnivorous, invertebrate-leaning diet.

In the aquarium, offer sinking pellets and wafers as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live bloodworm, tubifex and daphnia. A genuine appetite for small snails can be expected. Blanched vegetables provide variety. Feed after lights-out to suit the species' partly nocturnal foraging habit, and offer enough food that subordinate fish in the group receive their share.

Mating

Sexing L. flavolineata is not documented in the available literature. In botiids generally, females in breeding condition are plumper-bodied than males, but reliable external differences are rarely obvious and are only apparent in mature, well-conditioned fish. At a maximum of about 3.5 in SL the species is smaller than most botiids, yet the sexing challenge is the same.

In the closely related L. elongata, wild spawning occurs during seasonal upstream migrations in March through May, triggered by rising water levels and likely by temperature cues as snowmelt and spring rainfall swell the rivers. It is reasonable to assume L. flavolineata follows a similar pattern in the Juma River — a seasonal upstream movement timed to the warming of spring — though no direct spawning study for this species has been published.

Breeding

L. flavolineata is an egg-scattering botiid with no parental care, and it is not bred in home aquaria. Like other botiids, it is tied in the wild to seasonal flood- and snowmelt-driven spawning migrations that cannot be replicated in a domestic tank. The combination of seasonal temperature and flow cues, the need for upstream migration, and the difficulty of conditioning and sexing the fish makes voluntary home spawning essentially unrecorded.

Commercial production of botiid loaches — particularly the clown loach, but also other species — relies on hormone induction on Southeast-Asian farms, not on aquarium breeding. There is no evidence of L. flavolineata being traded in meaningful quantities, and no captive-breeding record exists for the species. A keeper should acquire it without expectation of breeding.

In the aquarium

L. flavolineata is a sociable botiid and should be kept in groups of five or more. Botiids kept singly or in pairs become stressed, withdrawn or aggressive; in a group they establish a loose hierarchy, forage together and, in healthy, content individuals, produce the audible clicking sounds characteristic of botiid loaches. A 35.5–47 in aquarium with a fine-sand or rounded-gravel substrate, smooth rocks and driftwood for shelter, and moderate flow and strong oxygenation suits the species well.

Because the type locality is a northern Chinese river well north of the subtropical belt, this is not a tropical fish: temperatures above roughly 72 °F (72 °F) are likely stressful, and a cool, well-oxygenated setup — akin to a temperate hillstream tank — is more appropriate than a warm community aquarium. Keep it with other cool-water, non-aggressive species.

The near-scaleless skin means L. flavolineata absorbs medications readily and is sensitive to copper and to full-strength anti-parasitic treatments. Yet like all botiids it is susceptible to ich. Treat at half-dose with a copper-free product, raise temperature gradually only within its tolerated range, and remove carbon from the filter before medicating. Regular, clean water changes and good oxygenation are the best disease prevention.

Conservation

Leptobotia flavolineata has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Its known range is narrow — centred on the Juma River drainage in Beijing's Fangshan County — making it potentially vulnerable to the pressures that affect North China Plain river systems: water extraction, agricultural run-off, damming and sedimentation. The Juma River has experienced significant hydrological alteration in recent decades as water demand in the greater Beijing region has grown.

The species is rarely seen in the ornamental trade and there is no indication that collection for aquaria is a significant pressure. Its conservation status is unknown and warrants formal evaluation; given its restricted range and a degraded river system, precautionary concern is appropriate. Hobbyists who do acquire it should prioritise captive-sourced stock if available and support efforts to improve water quality in North China's river systems.
