Taxonomy & naming
Leptobotia micra was formally described by Bohlen and Slechtová in 2017, making it one of the most recently named species in the genus. Leptobotia is a genus of Chinese river loaches within the family Botiidae; it contains species distributed primarily across the major drainages of China and the upper Mekong basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid fish names, recognises Leptobotia micra as a valid species under the combination published by Bohlen and Slechtová.
The genus Leptobotia has historically been placed variously within Cobitidae and Botiidae as concepts of family-level classification in Cobitoidea have shifted. Current taxonomy places Leptobotia firmly in Botiidae alongside the better-known genera Botia, Yasuhikotakia, Syncrossus and Chromobotia. As a 2017 description, Leptobotia micra has not yet appeared in many secondary databases, and the full details of its type locality and holotype repository should be verified against the original published description.
Morphology
As a member of Leptobotia, this is a relatively slender loach with a pointed snout, a moderately arched back, and the typical cobitoid body form. The species epithet micra — from the Greek for small — indicates this is one of the smaller members of the genus. Precise published size data is not available from the sources consulted; Leptobotia species in general range from roughly 2.5 in to over 10 in depending on species, and a species named for smallness likely falls toward the lower end of that range.
Like all botiids, Leptobotia micra carries a sharp, erectile suborbital spine — a bifurcated spine in a groove beneath each eye that can be flicked outward defensively. This spine readily snags nets and can break skin; the fish is best transferred in a container rather than lifted in mesh. The body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin effectively near-scaleless to the touch, a characteristic shared across the family that has direct implications for medication sensitivity.
Habitat
The genus Leptobotia is a Chinese endemic group found in the major river systems of China, including the Yangtze, Yellow, Pearl and Han river drainages and their tributaries, as well as some upper Mekong drainages near the Chinese border. Several Leptobotia species are subtropical rather than tropical, inhabiting flowing rivers and streams at elevations where temperatures are cooler than in the tropical lowlands of Southeast Asia. The original description would specify the type locality for Leptobotia micra; pending confirmation, it is most plausibly a Chinese river drainage.
Botiids in Chinese river systems typically inhabit clean, moderately flowing freshwater over gravel, sand and rock substrates. The water is generally cool to warm-cool, soft to moderately hard, and well oxygenated with a good current. This is a fish of flowing rivers and streams, not still or sluggish water.
Feeding
Leptobotia micra, as a botiid loach, is an omnivore with a strong emphasis on small invertebrates. The family as a whole feeds on insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and molluscs foraged from the benthos, with some plant material and detritus taken opportunistically. The snail-eating behaviour well documented in larger botiids — achieved using the pharyngeal teeth — is expected to be present in this genus as well, though the small size implied by the name micra will limit what prey sizes are taken.
In an aquarium setting it would be expected to accept sinking pellets and wafers, frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia, and small live foods. Because botiids are partially nocturnal foragers, a feed after lights-out helps ensure all fish receive adequate nutrition, particularly in a shoal where lower-ranking individuals may be out-competed at feeding time.
Mating
No captive breeding records for Leptobotia micra are known; the species is not established in the aquarium trade and data on its reproductive biology in the wild is sparse given the recency of its formal description. In the wider genus Leptobotia and across the family Botiidae, breeding is tied to seasonal flood cycles: adults ripen and migrate with rising water levels, spawning in shallower, faster water and floodplain areas, and the eggs and larvae develop in those conditions without parental involvement.
Sexual dimorphism in Leptobotia, as in most botiids, is subtle and unreliable as a visual guide. Ripe females may be visibly fuller in the abdomen, but outside of the breeding season the sexes are very difficult to distinguish by external characters alone. This, combined with the fish's near-absence from hobbyist tanks, means there is no practical guidance on sexing or conditioning a pair.
Breeding
Leptobotia micra has not been bred in home aquaria, and there is no reason to expect that it will be in the foreseeable future. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — a mode shared across the botiid family — whose wild reproduction is governed by seasonal flood-pulse triggers that are difficult or impossible to replicate in a home tank. Ripening, courtship and spawning in botiids follow rainfall-driven changes in water volume, flow rate, temperature and chemistry that act as environmental cues; without these cues, captive fish remain out of condition.
For the wider family, the only loaches bred commercially at any scale are the largest and most popular species — the clown loach above all — and even those are produced on Southeast Asian farms using hormone induction, not by aquarium-kept pairs. For a rare, data-sparse recent description such as Leptobotia micra, the honest summary is that captive breeding is not a realistic prospect at present.
In the aquarium
Leptobotia micra is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear in the mainstream trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or research contexts. Should specimens become available, the care framework for the genus applies: a group of at least five is the starting point, since botiids are obligate-social fish that become stressed, withdrawn or aggressive when kept singly or in very small numbers. In a proper group they form a social hierarchy, interact actively and feed confidently.
The near-scaleless body of all botiids makes Leptobotia micra sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of many common aquarium medications. This is doubly important because loaches are among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich and other external parasites, so a keeper must be prepared to treat while using reduced doses and gentle products. Water should be clean, well oxygenated and with a moderate current; a gravel or sand substrate and some cover in the form of smooth rocks or wood suit the genus. Given the possible subtropical affinities of the Leptobotia group, cooler water in the 68–79 °F range may be more appropriate than tropical temperatures, though the precise range for this species has not been published.
Conservation
Leptobotia micra has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026; it carries no formal conservation category and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2017: the IUCN assessment process takes time, and many recently named fish species from Chinese river systems remain unevaluated or are listed as Data Deficient pending survey work.
The conservation context for Chinese river loaches is broadly concerning. The major drainages of China have experienced extensive modification through dam construction, water abstraction, pollution and river channelisation. Species with restricted ranges — especially small, range-limited endemics of the kind suggested by a name like micra — can be disproportionately affected by these pressures. Without published range data it is not possible to assess the conservation position of Leptobotia micra specifically, but the precautionary pattern for narrow-range Chinese stream fishes points toward careful monitoring as survey work and IUCN assessment eventually proceed.
