Liniparhomaloptera disparis was described under the authority attributed to Linnaeus in 1934, though the authorship conventionally appears in parentheses because the species has since been combined with a genus different from the one in which it was originally placed. The genus Liniparhomaloptera belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream and torrent loaches of South and South-east Asia — and is placed in the subfamily Liniparhomalopterinae, a grouping of flattened, sucker-bodied rheophiles distributed across the rivers draining the Indo-Burmese highlands.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) governs valid names for this group. Balitoridae as currently constituted has undergone repeated revision since the early 2000s, with many genera formerly held in a broad Homalopteridae or in Balitoridae sensu lato redistributed among newly recognised families. Liniparhomaloptera has remained in Balitoridae through these revisions. Primary taxonomic literature on the genus is scattered across 20th-century regional fish-fauna surveys of Myanmar, Thailand and Indochina, and no modern molecular revision has been published for this specific genus. Data on individual species — including L. disparis — remain sparse in both the primary literature and the hobbyist literature.
Morphology
Like all members of its subfamily, Liniparhomaloptera disparis is strongly depressed — flattened from top to bottom rather than compressed side to side — with a broad, rounded head and a body that tapers toward a slender caudal peduncle. The pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged and held horizontally, forming an effective hydrodynamic anchor against torrential flow. The ventral surface is modified into an adhesive disc formed by the close-set pectoral and pelvic fins together with specialised skin folds, allowing the fish to cling to smooth, wet rock even in powerful current.
The snout is blunt and the mouth is subterminal, adapted for scraping biofilm from hard substrates. The lips are thickened and fleshy, sometimes with papillae or ridges that aid rasping. The body surface is effectively near-scaleless — scales are present but tiny and deeply embedded, giving the skin a smooth, almost naked appearance and rendering the fish sensitive to dissolved toxins and medications. Exact size data for L. disparis are not well documented in the accessible literature; hillstream loaches of this subfamily are generally small fishes, typically 1.5–3 in standard length at maturity, and this species likely falls within that range.
Liniparhomaloptera does not carry the suborbital spine that characterises the botiid loaches; that structure is a botiid and cobitid feature, not a balitorid one. Habitat
Liniparhomaloptera disparis is an obligate torrent specialist, found in fast-flowing, rocky, highly oxygenated hill streams in the Indo-Burma region — a broad biogeographic zone encompassing parts of Myanmar, Thailand and the Indochinese peninsula. These streams typically run over cobble, boulder and bedrock substrate in upland or montane catchments, and carry clean, cool to mildly warm water year-round. Dissolved oxygen is high due to constant turbulence; conductivity and mineral content are generally low in these granitic and sandstone drainages.
Water temperature in the native habitat is substantially cooler than the still, warm water that characterises lowland tropical fish — the hillstreams of this region often run at 61–72 °F, and even at the upper end of that range the water is strongly agitated and oxygen-rich. The fish clings to the upper faces of rocks directly exposed to current, where biofilm and periphyton accumulate most densely. It is absent from still backwaters, deep pools and lowland rivers.
Feeding
Liniparhomaloptera disparis is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps algae, diatoms and the microbial biofilm that coats current-scoured rock in its native torrents. In the wild this diet is supplemented by small invertebrates, meiofauna and organic detritus caught up in the biofilm mat. The rasping mouth and fleshy lips are morphological adaptations to this feeding mode.
In the aquarium the most critical feeding consideration is that this fish requires a mature, biofilm-covered rockscape: it cannot subsist on commercial fish food alone in a bare or newly set-up tank. Tanks must be aged for three to six months before introduction, with smooth stones and slate positioned under strong light to encourage algal growth. Once established, the diet can be supplemented with blanched greens (courgette, cucumber, spinach), spirulina-based sinking wafers, and small frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops. The species is not a general "algae eater" in the casual sense and will not thrive on flake food sinking to the bottom; inadequate biofilm availability is the single most common cause of death in captive individuals.
Mating

By analogy with better-studied balitorids from similar habitats, mating likely involves the male positioning himself alongside or beneath the female over a patch of coarse gravel or between stones, and gametes are released in fast-flowing water with no prolonged courtship ritual documented.
Sexual dimorphism in this genus is thought to be minimal or absent in external form, though mature females may appear plumper-bodied when gravid. The difficulty of distinguishing the sexes, combined with the highly specific current and temperature requirements needed to bring fish into reproductive condition, means that meaningful reports of mating behaviour in captivity for this genus are essentially absent from the literature.
Breeding
Liniparhomaloptera disparis is not known to have been bred in home aquaria, and there are no published accounts of captive spawning for the genus. In related balitorid genera such as Sewellia, occasional spawnings have been achieved in mature, strongly-flowing river-style tanks where conditions closely approximate the species' natural torrent habitat — eggs are deposited among stones and gravel, no parental care follows, and fry must find their own biofilm to graze from the earliest free-swimming stage. That general model likely applies here, but it remains theoretical for this species.
For most hillstream loaches of this subfamily the honest picture is that captive breeding is rare and unpublished. The trade in any Liniparhomaloptera that appears in commerce would be supplied by wild-collected individuals from their native streams, not by aquarium-raised stock. A keeper acquiring this species should approach it as a long-term display fish and specialist challenge, not an aquarium breeding project.
In the aquarium
Liniparhomaloptera disparis is a demanding species suited to experienced keepers who can replicate fast, cool, highly oxygenated water. The tank must be mature — meaning at least three to six months of running before any hillstream loach is introduced — and densely furnished with smooth, flat stones and slate arranged to create surface area for biofilm development. Powerful, directional water movement is not optional; a turnover of ten or more times the tank volume per hour, directed across the rock surfaces, is a reasonable target. A powerhead or dedicated spray-bar return aimed along the bottom hardscape works well.
Water temperature should be kept in the cool range — approximately 61–72 °F — and dissolved oxygen must remain high; these fish are sensitive to any drop in aeration, and a power outage or pump failure can be fatal within hours. Because the skin is effectively near-scaleless, the fish is readily damaged by copper-based medications and full-strength aquarium treatments; any disease in the tank should be treated with half-doses of copper-free remedies, or better, with the affected fish removed to a hospital tank. Standard community-tank anti-parasite products labelled "scaleless fish safe" should still be used at reduced concentration.
Liniparhomaloptera disparis is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium trade and unlikely to be found in general fish shops; it may occasionally appear through specialist importers or at cichlid and rare-fish events. Its dietary dependence on a mature biofilm surface and exacting current-and-temperature requirements make it an inappropriate choice for the beginning aquarist or for a standard tropical community setup. For the dedicated hillstream enthusiast with a purpose-built river tank, it represents a fascinating and little-documented species.
Conservation

No published population surveys or threat analyses are available for this species specifically. The genus occupies a narrow habitat — clean, fast, rocky hill streams in the Indo-Burma region — that is increasingly affected by upland deforestation, sedimentation from agriculture and road construction, and hydrological modification from small dams and water extraction for irrigation. These pressures have reduced stream quality and flow in many Indochinese and Myanmar catchments, and range-restricted hillstream specialists with small and patchy distributions are among the freshwater taxa most vulnerable to such changes.
Because L. disparis is not established in the trade and wild collection for the aquarium hobby appears negligible or absent, fishing pressure is unlikely to be a significant threat. The greater risk is the slow-motion loss of habitat quality in its native stream systems.
